Mr and Mrs Ray Fox of Carmel welcomed a 7 lb daughter Sheri Eileen born September 20 1963 at Community Hospital Indianapolis. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Russell Roland of Carthage and Mrs Ida Fox of Fountaintown.
The Carthage Band Boosters met Tuesday night at the school building with seven present. They planned to sell assorted candies and nuts this fall as a project.
Mrs. Thomas Bush Mrs. Ross Tweedy Mrs. Guy Ewing Mrs. Donald Ruby and Mrs. Forrest Moore attended a Central District Flower Show in Indianapolis last Wednesday.
Mr and Mrs Lava7rence Ersland of Goshen announce the birth of a daughter on Thursday September 24 1963. Granddaughter of Lewis Donoho of Carthage, Mrs Ersland is a former Carthage girl.
Richard Robertson of Carthage sustained a slight concussion and facial injuries on Wednesday morning at the Knightstown Banner office pressroom. He was transported to Rush Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Frank E Wantz has been named Plant Manager at the Container Corporation plant here, announced by Hans Buehler General Manager.
Juries for the October term were drawn by the jury commissioners and announced by County Clerk Dallas Hardwick. Grand jury candidates in the Carthage area include Donald Jessup, R R 2, Donald Stoten Jr., R R 2. Petit jurors are Richard Bonne, Kenneth E. Ray, William H. Skinner, all of Carthage, and Russell Leisure, R R 2.
The Better Business Association of Carthage will meet October 8 at noon at Geise Restaurant for their October meeting. The meeting was postponed due to the Fall Festival.
Dr. Clair G. Maple becomes director of the Computation Center at Iowa State Teachers College, succeeding Ralph W. Klappenstein who returns to RCA laboratories. Maple, a professor since 1955 and longtime staffer since 1949, has taught at West Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Carnegie Tech, and North Texas State. He is brother of Mrs. Laura Sandefur of Carthage.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship met Monday night September 30 at 7 in the church annex with six members present. Refreshments were served by Janice Blessinger. Attendees included Virginia Whitfield Diana Whitfield Bernice Griffin Reta Stanley Janice Blessinger and Linda Brown with Linda Brown as Asst. Sec.
Mrs Mae Welsh entered Rush Memorial Hospital Sunday for tests and observation. David DeWitt Sr entered Henry County Hospital Wednesday for observation. Mrs Henry Stenger improves at Rush Memorial Hospital. Oran Henley remains unchanged at his Carthage home. Mrs Worth Pitts remains about the same at her Carthage railroad home.
Arnold Miller 83 of Carthage died Monday at Rush Memorial Hospital after six months of ill health. Born December 22, 1879 south of Carthage, he farmed most of his life and belonged to the Carthage Brotherhood and Sisterhood. Survivors include his widow Maude Wilson Miller two sons Carl and Hansel two daughters Evelyn Wilcoxon a brother Lon Miller a sister Myrtle Miller ten grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. One son preceded him in death. The Rev Harry Cooper conducted services at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Emerson L Masters age 63 died Saturday at Reid Memorial Hospital Richmond Indiana after a year long heart ailment. He was a retired mechanic with National Automatic Tool Company and member of the Church of the Nazarene. Survived by widow Elizabeth stepchildren Eugene Hooks and Mrs Wilber Inglert mother Mrs Mary L Masters siblings and brothers. Services were held Tuesday at Jones and Placke Funeral Home with burial at Earlham Cemetery.
The children of Mr and Mrs Fred B White Greenfield R 3 invite friends to an Open House honoring the couple on Sunday October 13 from 2 to 5 pm at their country residence two miles southwest of Charlottesville. The Whites were married October 15 1913 by Rev Edgar Williams at the home of the bride on Walnut and Second Street Carthage. They started in Carthage then have lived at their present address for 47 years. They have four children Joseph P deceased Margaret Perisho North Mankato Minnesota Edgar C Muncie Lois Ruth Shields Carthage R 1 and nine grandchildren.
C W F The Christian Women Fellowship meeting will be held Thursday October 10 at the Christian Church.
Carthage Art Colony members present a public display at the Tweedy Memorial Community Center basement during the Fair Festival. They will sell raffle tickets for a chance to win a chosen artwork on Saturday October 5, 1963 at 8 p.m. with the prize selection from over seven paintings.
New Salem and Carthage advanced to the county baseball final after wins Tuesday. New Salem beat Milroy 3-1 as Dalrymple struck out nine. Carthage rallied to beat Mays 12-10 with Porter homering twice. Carthage previously blanked Morton 6-0 behind Porter on the mound.
Mr and Mrs Frank Hampton and their sons visited Mrs Avery Stevenson and Mr Stevenson at Springville. Roy Turner and family stayed with Paul and Robert Turner in Indianapolis. Dr and Mrs C A Thompson of Knightstown and Virgil Roland visited Mr and Mrs Russell Roland. Laura Sandefur stayed with Violet Kline in Connersville. Sunday dinners included Steve Maple of Shelbyville and Paul Kline of Connersville. Arnold Gulley of Milwaukee left after visiting his mother Lon Gulley. Kenneth Rhodes and niece Carol Hartzler visited Sp 4 and Mrs Paul Sebesky at Fort Knox. Mrs James Mosier and daughters from Greenfield visited Ethel Graf in Cincinnati from Sunday to Tuesday.
The 24 member senior class announces new member Bob Mummert from Knightstown and plans a supper after the first home game on November 27. Officers elected include Stephen Marshall president and Cynthia Pearson secretary, with sponsors Land and Wright guiding the final year. The group thanks local merchants for ad support for the annual travel funds.
Patty McCorkle daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul McCorkle was chosen Festival Queen for 1963 after competing with thirty five rivals in a pageant at the Carthage Community Center. Judges from Rushville and nearby areas selected her following formal wear and bathing suit rounds and a tea interview. The event featured local dignitaries, entertainment by John David Kirkpatrick, and a sponsor Jacksons Marathon Station.
Results from the Fall Festival Bowling Tournament at Darth Knight Lanes on September 28 and 29 list champions Jackie Magee and Noah Brooks. Women placed Jacqueline Magee 606 trophy Sue Siler 576 two smorgasbord tickets Norma McKain 569 two dance tickets. Men placed Noah Brooks 730 trophy Clyde Ruby 661 two smorgasbord tickets Homer Hensler and Hugh Moragn tied at 642 two dance tickets each. Co chairs Bob McKain and Bill Alexander thank participants and extend congratulations.
A marriage license was issued in New Castle to Arthur Fannin of Carthage and Mary Wright of Dunreith. The document records the legal union and lists the two individuals as applicants.
A Rush County dispute over adding a mile square area in Center and Ripley townships to Henry County's school plan will be heard October 4 in Hancock Circuit Court at 9 30 a m. Plaintiffs oppose annexation and consolidation by the Henry County School Reorganization Committee Knightstown’s Charles A Beard Memorial School Corporation and its board members with tax officials of both counties named. The contested territory carries about 100000 in tax value and lies within a metropolitan district approved by voters last month awaiting court action.
Leonard Wrightsman Caleb Marsh and Omer Heim spent a few days at Lake Freeman on a successful fishing trip. Mrs. Laura Sandefur, Mrs. Louise Gordon, and Mrs. Helen Wilson attended a Christmas Avon display at St. Vincent's Church in Shelbyville. Nearby, Mrs. Albert Ray and others called at the Richmond funeral home after Emerson Masters death. Also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scott and their daughter Cindy from Clearwater Florida, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Porter with sons Kittrell and Alva in Knightstown.
A Sunday afternoon tea at the Carthage Community Center hosted Fall Festival Queen candidates and guests from 2 to 5 pm. Judge panel including Mrs. Eddie Northam Grayson Mahin and William Brewer reviewed candidates as they introduced themselves and sponsors. Punch cookies were served to about 120 guests. each candidate was privately interviewed by the judges for scoring.
Mrs Luther Hall Mrs Leonard Jackson and Mrs Forrest Moore attended the Rush County Missionary Fellowship Day at Ben Davis Christian Church Indianapolis with eleven counties represented. Mrs Mary Dale Executive Secretary of the Dept of Home Missions delivered the message.
Mr. and Mrs. Unn Fitch spent last week at Silver Lake returning home Sunday. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Howard McCorkle of Carthage and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Sherwood of Brookville from Friday to Sunday.
The Carthage Legion plans a meeting on Wednesday October 9 with members urged to attend.
