Dr. Homer L. Hensler won the 10th District Veterinarians Medical Association golf tournament at Westwood Country Club New Castle sponsored by Pharmaceutical Salesmen. He and Dr. Kuhn Milroy tied after 18 holes and Hensler edged Kuhn by one stroke with an 88 in the playoff for the trophy.
Mr and Mrs Frank Shutt and daughter Karen depart Indianapolis for a new home in Phoenix Arizona. Mr Shutt formerly lived here and is the son of Mr and Mrs Russell Shutt Sr indicating a relocation within the west.
Thirty six entrants for the 1963 Fall Festival Queen Contest have their photos placed in a Carthage Jewelry Store window with the queen trophy, creating a public display of contenders.
William Alexander and Earl Herkless of Carthage visited O. W. Herkless and Mrs. Herkless in Chattanooga from Sunday to Wednesday. O. W. Herkless will celebrate his 90th birthday next.
Bill Robertson arrives Saturday after 13 months in Korea. After a furlough, he and wife will reside at Fort Benning Georgia with their son Jay while wife and child live with her parents Mr and Mrs Fletcher Edwards pending relocation.
The Carthage Fall Festival queen candidates and their mothers along with queen sponsors will be guests of honor at a tea on Sunday September 29 at 2 p.m. Local event to be held in the Community Center basement.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle and Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier returned last Thursday night from a 10 day vacation in Wisconsin and Michigan. They enjoyed boat tours at The Dells three days near Eagle River four days at Hamlin Lake Ludington.
The Carthage Band Boosters schedule a meeting Tuesday October 1 at 7 30 p m in the school building. All band members parents are urged to attend.
The Tweedy Memorial Center will hold its annual meeting for directors and officers on Tuesday evening October 8 at 8 p m. Open to the public, the session will elect three directors for the coming year and discuss other association matters. Jane Rhodes secretary.
Gerald L. Price Jr. of Falmouth assistant secretary Fay ette Federal Building and Loan Association and Mary Jo Gray of Connersville a General Telephone Company employee filed for a marriage license in Connersville.
The Afternoon Bridge Club gathered Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. Guy Ewing's home after lunch at the Durbin Hotel. Honors went to Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Arthur Win, with Mesdames Forrest Moore, Maude Barbour, Ross Tweedy, Wilbur McCorkle, Lindley Taylor, and Mrs. Ewing also in attendance.
Plans are ready for the Annual Festival from September 28 to October 5 at Darth-Knight Bowling Lanes with events including a Queen Pageant on Wednesday and a Saturday parade and dance. Jessop's Rides arrives Sunday with most rides opening Monday night as the town anticipates a full schedule of shows contests and community gatherings. Extension Committee met September 23 to discuss Soil Fertility programs Purdue speakers January 22 to February 5 and the upcoming Rush County Extension Meeting January 22 at the Durbin Hotel with the theme Learn and Serve Through Extension.
Bloomington announces that high school bands from Rush County and all 91 counties are invited to Indiana University's Band Day on October 26. The day features a mass band performance before the IU versus Cincinnati football game and includes the Marching Hundred. In 1962 ninety-two bands with over 6,000 members participated. Ronald D. Gregory leads the event.
Leland Hankins of Muncie returned home Friday from Ball Memorial Hospital after major surgery. Oran Henley of Carthage remains about the same at his Carthage home. Mrs. Henry Stenger improves at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. David Ray and Mrs. Worth Pitts convalesce at Carthage homes. Evelyn Neal returned home from Rush Memorial Hospital and is slowly improving.
James Neal son of Mrs. Ben Neal left Carthage this week to resume army service in Frankfurt Germany. He had been home on emergency leave due to his father's illness and death.
Mr and Mrs Odell Pitts with children Jan Larry and Ralph Truitt visited Mr and Mrs David Magee and sons in Cincinnati. The group attended the baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St Louis Cardinals Friday evening.
Mrs Mary Haywood White died suddenly last Monday at her home in Harvard Illinois. She was the widow of Murray J White and a Carthage native. Survivors include a son Murray Jr and two grandsons of Rockford. Two brothers Joseph and Carl Haywood of Indianapolis. Service set for 1 30 Thursday afternoon with burial in Harvard.
Manilla used a five run inning to pull away from Carthage and win 7 to 4 at Carthage. Cassidy hit a triple for the winners while Mofield homered for Carthage and Zimmerman collected a double and a triple. Carthage closes the game with runners on second and third.
Mr and Mrs Bob Fancher and their son of Arlington were reported Sunday evening in a brief local notice mentioning their family. The fragmentary text provides no additional details on event or context.
A church revival is planned from October 6 through October 12 at Carthage Fletcher Methodist Church. Rev Grayson Atha leads the revival, with Jack Wallace assisting. Atha is pastor at Haviland Methodist Church in Ohio and has education from Taylor University Garrett Seminary Goshen Biblical Seminary and the Methodist Theological School in Ohio. He is married with one son and directs Senior High work for the Defiance District.
The county baseball tournament kicks off with three 3 p.m. games on Friday: Carthage vs Morton, Milroy vs Manilla, and New Salem vs Arlington. Mays earns a bye and will face Friday’s Carthage Morton winner on Tuesday, Oct. 1, with winners from the other two games also meeting that day. Arlington, the defending champion, awaits the Friday winners for the championship on Friday, October 4, as the cross country meet is set for October 8 at Morton’s course.
Rex D. Kemple 77 of Rushville R R 5 died at 8 35 p m Tuesday in Jackson Nursing Home where he had lived a month. He was a longtime auctioneer and hog raiser born March 11 1886 in Rush County. He is survived by his widow Harriet Lair Whitinger four sons and two daughters and 15 grandchildren. Services Friday 10 a m Wyatt Moore Memorial with burial in Rushville East Hill Cemetery. Carthage cruised past Arlington 15 to 5 in a high school league game. The Raiders piled up 15 hits including five homers and two doubles led by Zimmerman with two homers and a double. Jordan Lafuse and Porter added homers. Porter also doubled. Baker homered for Arlington. Carthage pitchers struck out nine, walks three. Beckner fanned six for Arlington.
Rush County Board of Commissioners held a special session and accepted the resignation of James Harley from the post of county surveyor. He will serve as interim from October 1963 until January 1, 1965 or until his successor is elected and qualified.
