Parker Stockbridge reflects on the New York Auto Show noting no poor cars exist, safety glass and all steel bodies boost safety, brakes require less pedal pressure, and faster speeds demand wiser driving. Comfort, steering ease, and winter features improve in 1937 models as trailers gain popularity and streamlining remains a goal for designers.
The annual union Thanksgiving service is held tonight at 7 15 at the Christian church with Rev Robert Myers of the Methodist church as speaker. The short service aims to uplift gratitude beyond mere feasting and emphasize freedom, privilege, and unity of the nation.
Miss Mary Elizabeth Gatewood daughter of Mr and Mrs William Gatewood and Robert Moore son of Mr and Mrs Jack Moore both of Carthage were married by Rev Frank C Guyatt at his Dublin home. The ring ceremony occurred at two p m Saturday with Mr and Mrs Charles Heim as witnesses. The bride wore a blue gown with gray accessories. Both graduates of Carthage High School the couple plans a Tennessee trip and will reside in a newly furnished home at Mrs Laura Hinshaw's property.
The Friends Missionary Society held a gathering with thirteen members answering the roll call thankfulness. Annie H Newsom led a lesson on the Negro Worker while Esta Haworth played a piano medley. Members discussed sending gifts to mountain families in Tennessee and noted previous attendees.
Mrs. Anna Anderson and daughter Marjorie hosted a Sunday dinner at their home. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mattix of Greenfield, Mr. Luther White of Knightstown, Mrs. Elva Mattix and daughter Cordelia, and Mrs. Nora Mattix of Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Loren Geise and daughter near Arlington were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Lowell Geise, Mr Cleve Geise and son Jimmie in a local family gathering reflecting the community social scene.
Stuart Urmston a 52 year old Center Township farmer died in Henry County hospital about two hours after being struck on U S Highway 40 at Washington street intersection by a car driven by Chelsie Day of Indiana polis. Witnesses said Day not to blame. she stated she could not see Urmston in time to stop. Urmston, born December 27 1883 in Kentucky, resided in Rush county nine years. He was a Presbyterian, Mason, survived by widow and three sons. Funeral at residence with Rev. Kelsey, burial in Jacksonville Kentucky.
Dr. Stanley Coulter, chairing the 1936 drive, notes the Christmas Seal Sale has grown from a $3,000 venture to about $4,000,000 in 1935. The effort funded 700 sanatoria and hospitals, built a nationwide network of health facilities, and supports TB programs from nursing to school health nationwide.
The Christian Helpers of the East St. Christian Church will gather at the home of Mrs. Anna Sipe on December 3. Mrs. Gladys Norris and Mrs. Ruth Bever will assist as hostesses. A Christmas gift exchange of ten cents will conclude the meeting.
The Fletcher M. E. Aid society will meet at the home of Mrs. Ella Nelson Thursday afternoon December 3 with Mrs. Arthur Rodgers and Mrs. Robinson assisting.
Miss Mary Shelby daughter of S M Shelby Indianapolis married John C Heim son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Heim near Carthage in an informal McKee chapel ceremony at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church Indianapolis Rev J Ambrose Dunkel officiated with Seldom Marsh and Elizabeth Miller providing music The couple will reside at 3420 North Meridian after December 5 with Carthage guests in attendance.
John V. Gates redecorates his Gates Variety Store interior painting shelves and rearranging merchandise in preparation for a major sale starting about December 10.
Carthage Bluebirds beat Raleigh 23 to 11 Friday then fell to Morristown 25 to 15 Saturday. McMichael starred both games as Morristown, Shelby County champions last season, built a strong lead and held off Carthage late rally.
Mr and Mrs J A Lineback spent Monday in Indianapolis for unspecified reasons as noted in local society columns.
Indiana officials publish a calendar showing how employers must file state contribution reports and deduct the state tax from federal payroll duties. The 1936-37 outline covers the 1% federal tax beginning Jan 1 1936 and Indiana’s 1.2 percent state levy, with May 1 20 due dates and January 20 1937 final reports.
A telegram from Mrs. Herman Bryart reports Horace H Newsom 60 killed Monday near Toledo Ohio. Newsom son of Daniel and Phoebe Newsom born on Newsom Farm near Carthage and Purdue graduate. He worked for General Motors during World War I era and was half owner of the McCord factory supplying aircraft parts. Funeral planned in Cleveland Ohio Wednesday. Survived by mother sister two nieces Carolyn and Abby Bryant one nephew Dr Richard Bryant and numerous cousins.
Miss Betty Moore of Carthage, bride to be Carlos Brooks on December 16, was the guest of honor at a linen show hosted by Miss Jean Tindall in Indianapolis. Attendees from Carthage included Mrs. Stewart Morgan, Mrs. Robert Moore, and Mrs. Jack Moore. other guests were list of Indiana residents and Tindall family members.
Mrs. Fred B. Sims hosted a Saturday night miscellaneous shower for Miss Mary Elizabeth Gatewood at her home with five bridge tables and refreshments. Earlier, Mrs. Stewart Morgan Miss Anna Mae Newsom and Miss Betty Moore hosted another shower for Gatewood at Mrs. Morgan’s home with bridge, gifts presented on the dining room table, and prizes awarded to Mrs. G. B. McNabb and Mrs. Grace Phelps.

Mrs A J Carr, who underwent a major operation at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, is reported improving. It is not known when she will return home.
Shirley Temple shines in Dimples with songs and dances at the Auditorium Theatre for two days this Friday and Saturday. The young star also performs as every role in Uncle Tom's Cabin with lively minstrel style. Will Rogers stars in Ambassador Bill next Wednesday December 2 to delight fans.
