Indianapolis News reports a man with a 43 inch squash previously. Now Carthage resident Lewis Donoho grows a 47 and a half inch squash weighing 11 pounds 10 ounces on his coal house on South Main Street. The item is touted as a potential record.
Ripley Township Farm Bureau held a Monday turkey dinner at the Community Center with about one hundred guests. Cecil Pike chaired as Rev. Everett Chapman gave devotions. 4-H students sang, and Mrs. Jay Leavitt, 4-H girls leader, attended. Ralph Truitt read the September minutes. The assistant county agent presented 4-H pins to the children.
Mrs. Frank Alexander and Mrs. George McNabb announce Ripley Township citizens contributed 1486.62 to the United Fund Drive. They express thanks to all who solicited and contributed to the worthwhile fund.
Mr and Mrs Charles Elmore of Carthage are parents of an 8 lb son born Saturday November 19 at Rush Memorial Hospital named Christopher Scott. The baby is the grandson of Mr and Mrs Rue McDaniel of Carthage.
Attendance at the Purdue versus Indiana football game in Lafayette included Kellis Veach Sid Johnson and Chuck Worden from I U Dean Gardner Jim Ellis Jr and David Ruby from Carthage and Gary Clayton from Indianapolis.
Mr and Mrs Max Robertson of Knightstown announce the birth of their daughter Sherri Lynn at Henry County Hospital. The newborn weighs 7 pounds 13 ounces and is the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Robertson of Carthage and Mr and Mrs Paul VanScyoc.
Lake Logan was admitted to Henry County Hospital last Wednesday and had surgeries on Thursday and Monday with room 219. David DeWitt Jr entered the same hospital last week for observation.
Mr and Mrs Dennis Norfleet of Carthage welcomed a son born Saturday at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mr and Mrs Billy Green of Carthage welcomed a son born Sunday at Rushville. Mr and Mrs James Roberts of Carthage welcomed a son Charles Darren born November 19 at Henry County Hospital. The child is grandson of Mrs Hazel Roberts and Mr and Mrs Bernard Caldwell. Mr and Mrs James Lacy of New Castle welcomed a son Richard Lee born November 15 at Henry County Hospital. Roscoe Davis acts as maternal grandfather in this birth notice.
Richard E. Weidner aged 21 from Carthage, an auto worker, and Barbara J. McCorkle aged 19 from Knightstown, obtained a marriage license.
Boy Scouts of Carthage held a meeting November 19 at the library, paid dues, and discussed the twelve Scout laws. A scrap metal drive will collect junk metal Friday and Saturday November 25 and 26. Donations can contact Scoutmaster James Whitfield or call Logan 5-5305.
Mr and Mrs Howard Winslow visited his brother Donald Winslow and family in Indianapolis Sunday. Mr and Mrs Roy Turner were Sunday evening guests of Mr and Mrs Clarence Baily and Mr and Mrs Gerald Andis from near Greenfield.
CHS reports include student choir activities and grade updates. A senior quartet Carlin Gardner leads a group with Carol Carver Pam Hunt and David Ruby performing for community groups. Fifth and sixth graders created Thanksgiving displays and practiced stories. Faculty plans Thanksgiving travel and family visits fill the break.
A letter from Carthage Vol Fire Dept requests community backing to fund upgrades including a 57 model tractor funded by a Carthage Bank loan. The non profit group seeks donations as the department emphasizes it operates on basic gear and will not pay members.
Arlington opens a new post office on the east side of Carthage road built by the Nelson Brothers for lease. The 24 by 40 foot building features a tinted glass front a large lobby 154 lock boxes a work room rest room and furnace room with a rear parking area. Postmaster John Coffin notes hours 6 30 am to 6 30 pm and lists mail routes including an Indianapolis eastbound arrival at 4 30 am and a Rushville Star route at 7 30 am. Westbound service runs at 1 10 pm to Indianapolis and 6 pm Star route through Arlington. Other staff include Mrs Coffin clerk and Wayne Lee rural route driver. Coffin has been postmaster since October 1943. A Manilla post office also opened this month.

The Carthage squad was routed by Mays 70 to 31 after a strong first game win over Knights town. Mays led each quarter 16-12 25-18 42-25 and featured Cook with 15 points and rebounding edge while Leisure Tanksley Hallgarth hit in double figures. Carthage struggled offensively and on the boards as the Tigers built a lopsided victory under a large home crowd. second team won 41-34 in the curtain-raiser.
Manilla led throughout the game as Kessler 24 and Davis plus Houston fueled the victory. Carthage struggled with 8 first-half field goals and a six-man rotation slump, while Manilla built a 19 11 first-quarter edge and a 52 36 margin late. The Raiders’ bench fell short 31 30 in a separate late-period loss to Manilla.
Rush County Council of United Church Women and the Ministerial Association urge December 18 to 25 as a family and church focused period. H. H. Vaughn leader of the Railroad Community Service Committee released figures showing about 50 615 dollars of 1959 railroad property tax support went to Carthage Rush County public schools. The statewide totals cited railroads paying roughly 19 621 896 in 1959 with about 11 317 858 allocated to public schools. Vaughn noted railroads feel they pay more than their share while highways and airports are funded by public taxes.

A 25th anniversary party and cooking demonstration at Carthage Community Center drew 270 guests hosted by Carthage Radio and Appliance Shop. Patricia Harter led a turkey dinner demo. Ann Thomas and Bill Caldwell performed. many attendees won prizes and turkeys and chickens were donated by the Business Men's Association.
Guests for the week include Mr. and Mrs. James Mosier and daughter Charissa of Cincinnati and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Watkins and son Mikey of Nashville visiting from Wednesday to Sunday. Roy Stanley and daughter Reta spent the weekend with their son John Stanley and Mrs. Stanley in Winchester Kentucky.
