Firefighters from Carthage responded to a blaze at a barn on the Merritt and Iola Stafford farm west of Carthage on Tuesday evening. The fire prompted on scene work to control flames and prevent spread to nearby structures.
A regular Ripley Township Conservation Club meeting is set for Thursday December 8 at 7 30 p m at the Community Center. All members are urged to attend.
The Carthage Band Boosters will hold a meeting on Tuesday December 6 1960 at 7 30 p m in the Carthage School building.
Rush Lodge No. 580 F and AM schedules a stated meeting on Wednesday December 7 at 7 30 p m Election of officers will be held Lee Patton W M and Eugene R Gardner Scy announce the event for members and attendees
November 28 meeting at the home of Mrs Alice McNabb included the pledge of allegiance races with puzzles refreshments and bowling. Denner Larry Johnson led activities.
Iva Cook traveled to Chicago with her son Donald and wife over Thanksgiving weekend. They attended the National Livestock Show and Rodeo on Saturday and the flower and plant show in the new Mevermick building in the evening. Mr and Mrs Harold Bushorn joined Mrs Cook. The trip was by train.
Mr and Mrs A W Winfield returned home Monday from a nine day trip and vacation with their daughter and family Mr and Mrs Spencer Lloyd and daughter Susan. They stayed at the Commodore Perry Hotel in Austin Texas and attended the Texas University and Texas A M football game on Thanksgiving day.
Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Hunt of Lafayette announce the birth of their daughter Kristin Lynn, born Wednesday November 30 1960 at St Elizabeth Hospital In Lafayette. She weighs seven pounds nine ounces and is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sharon Hunt of Carthage Route 1.

Plans for the 4 H and FFA county crops judging contest call for Saturday December 3 at the Courthouse. About 75 youths are expected to participate in events such as crop seed and weed seed identification and judging of soybean oats wheat legume samples and corn grading. The goal is to teach recognizing good seed and grain samples and identifying crops and harmful weed seeds.

The Carthage Lions Club met Monday at the Community Center for a ham and egg supper hosted by the losing team in the attendance contest. Nineteen members attended as President Hubert Hunt led the business session. Jack Rhoades reported, and Lee Silver presented Alaska slides. The annual family Christmas party is set for December 18.

The Better Business Association of Carthage held a dinner meeting at the Hoosier Manor with president Robert Winters in charge. Clyde E Ruby delivered the invocation as members and wives gathered and the group sang Happy Birthday to Mrs Clyde Ruby.
Revival services will begin at the Wesleyan Methodist Church on Sunday December 4 at 7 30 p m for two weeks, extending evenings with services each night.

Miss Martha Foster 14 of Greenfield wins grand champion ribbon in the Junior Barrow Show at the 61st International Livestock Exposition in Chicago with a 225 pound Poland China barrow. The event opens with over 10,000 animals competing for $160000 in prizes. Foster helps on a 220 acre Hancock County farm and will have her champion shown in the open class Tuesday.
Center Township farmer Floyd Hiner earned multiple honors at the Canadian Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. He exhibited the reserve champion peck of shelled corn using Indiana 828 seed, won first with Shelby soybeans in the all regions other than Canada class, and placed fourth with a ten car corn exhibit plus eighth with a peck of La Porte wheat in the same all regions category.
Mrs Maxine Riggs received the occasional chair awarded by Lilly Furniture Company of Knightstown at a Saturday night event.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Land announce the birth of their son named Kelly Murphy born Sunday November 27 at Rush Memorial Hospital weighing 9 pounds.
Thanksgiving guests of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Gardner and their sons from Arlington R. R. included Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Gardner with daughters and Mrs. Mary Gardner of Shelbyville. Mrs. Mary Gardner remained as a guest through Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner of R. R. 1 Carthage Indiana will observe their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home Sunday December 11 1960 from 2 to 5 p.m. Their daughter Mrs Edith Bean of Rushville and grandchildren Mrs William Floyd Circleville and Mr Carl Bean Pine Grove West Virginia along with eight great grandchildren are invited to attend.
David Geise of Noble Township wins a National Scholarship for tractor maintenance at the National 4H Club Congress in Chicago. The Purdue sophomore, 1959 state tractor driving winner, has long led Rush County 4H programs and earned a $75 dairy award in 1959 along with dairy show trophies. He is a Farm House member at Purdue and son of Harlan Geise.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Spencer of Morristown announce the purchase of the L V Hauk Funeral Home and the opening of the Hauk Spencer Mortuary on the former Pitts property at the west edge of Morristown on U S Highway 52. Certification from the Indiana State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors has been received. Mrs Spencer, Betty Hauk, is the former daughter of L V Hauk and a licensed funeral director. Spencer is a 1946 graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science with licenses in embalming and funeral directing.
Mrs. Al Stapp and daughter Jeanie with the Apple and Stapp families from Ci cero and Knightstown hosted guests. Jeff Leisure Ethel Posey Fred Posey and Charles Nordloh visited Spiceland at the Posey home. Robert Martz his son at Wabash College joined by Lindley Taylor Richard Stumpf and families Pfieffer family also present. Kennedy Newsom families from Marion and near Mays joined Paul Newsom and E P Stanley households for the holiday.
Den No 2 met November 23 with 10 members present. We played basketball and sang songs. Chuck Henley served refreshments. We welcome new Scout Dwaine Ray and note Denner Mike Joseph.

Troop 129 met on Saturday November 26 with roll call and clue collection. A brief discussion followed then games at the school. Scribe Jerry May thanks donors of metal for the scrap drive.

State Trooper James Kleiman and Town Marshal Hugh Trowbridge investigated a Carthage School break-in this week. Thieves forced entry by smashing the principal's office door, battered a safe to steal about 30 cents, and tried to break a soft drink machine. They also accessed the school shop for tools. this was the second break-in in recent weeks.
