A surprise dinner honored Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nordloh on their 50th anniversary at their Spice Sand home. A cake by Mrs. Gene Posey topped the event with many local guests, including the Leisure and Posey families from Carthage Knightstown and New Castle.
Rush County 4-H members were honored at the annual County 4-H Achievement program held at Jackson School auditorium. Awards, trophies and trips for 1956 were announced, with leadership and project members recognized by the 4-H Club Council and various organizations.
Jack Roark 17 a Manilla High School junior died at 4 45 am Friday after a .22 rifle bullet struck him in the back during a rabbit hunt on Norman Martin's father's farm between Arlington and Homer. Martin 17 says Roark jumped into the line of fire as both youths fired.
Carthage Lions Club entertained the Rushville Lions Club with 29 visiting members. Lee Patton presided as banquet followed by entertainment by The Four Chilluns and soloists Pamela Hunt and David Ruby. Bayard Baker spoke on This Cockeyed World stressing friendship and good will. Carthage will visit Mays Lions Club in February.
Sunday visitors were listed across multiple households. Greenfield residents Mr and Mrs Ross Souder and Mrs Gertrude Souder called on Mrs Gertrude Jesup. Rushville hosts included Mr and Mrs Leonard Wrightsman and children with Mr and Mrs Charles Scott. Rushville area guests also included Mr and Mrs William Scott from Ohio. Indianapolis saw Mr and Mrs George Apple with Leo Ridlen and family. Indianapolis visitors to Mr and Mrs Charles Zapf included Mr and Mrs Russell Roland Roger Allen Fox and Mr and Mrs Earl Roland with children Ronald and Joyce.
Carthage Town Board rejected two bids for a new fire station as excessive to the $10,000 bond issue. F W Wilfong of Greenfield bid 10 477 and Albert Oster of Wilkinson bid 10 941. The station will be west of the library beside the town hall, to house four apparatus. A new bid date will be set to meet the estimated price.
David Hull remains in the West over hospital in Massachusetts and slowly improves. He will receive his discharge in December and will return to Carthage.
The Methodist and Friends churches of Charlottesville schedule a four night missionary conference from Nov 17 to 20 in the Methodist church at 7 30 each evening. Speakers include Miss Elizabeth Hayes Rev Meredith Helsby and Austin Boggan sharing reports from Colombia China Korea and India with aims to inform and inspire church members.
The Carthage Blue Raiders defeated visiting Knightstown Falcons 61 to 57 Friday night in a comeback win. Carthage led 36-25 at halftime and held the Falcons to poor shooting. Parish Magee and McClurg contributed strongly while Watkins added key points. The Knightstown defense tightened in the second half but could not overtake the lead. The Carthage Seconds also won 35-23.
An 18 year old Donald Jackson of Rushville escaped serious injury when his car collided with a moving freight train at an unprotected crossing on West First Street. His car was demolished and he was treated for lacerations and a head bump at Rush Memorial Hospital before being released.
Miss Sarah E Newby died at her home southeast of Carthage on Thursday afternoon at one o clock. She was born in Rush County daughter of Thomas T and Martha Jennie Griffin Newby. She lived most of her life in the family home. She belonged to Carthage Friends church and the Historical Society. Survived by first cousin Jesse Henley. Services Saturday at 2 pm at Thompson Funeral Home with Rev Eugene C Sommer conducting. Music by Mrs A J Carr. Casket bearers named. Interment Riverside cemetery.
Willis Campbell died after a heart attack on Carthage streets. He had been staying at the Carthage Hotel for a week and was taken to Rush Memorial but died en route to the hospital. Campbell formerly lived in Greenfield and worked on the street department until recently.
Mr Dennis Manuel father of Lloyd Manuel entered the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis last week and underwent surgery. He is improving slowly.
Indiana ceded the world corn championship at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair after holding it three years. W. C. Kirk of Jeffersonville Ohio won the top prize. Floyd Hiner of Center Township Rush County Indiana, 1954 world champion, captured the reserve championship in the field of corn. A. C. Stewart of Greensburg Indiana won the shelled corn title.
Combined enrollment in city and township schools ends six week period shows 4 417 pupils in Rush County. This year 4 417 versus 4 200 a year ago, reflecting a gain of 217 under attendance officer Mrs Margaret Parmenter.
The Twice Four Bridge Club enjoyed a chicken dinner at Holiday Lodge Tuesday night with bridge honors earned by Mary Taylor Flossie McCorkle and Mary Ellen McClurg. Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority chapters in Hope and Carthage held a joint dinner meeting with about 20 attendees, initiating Barbara Plank Helen Hardin and Sharon Sipes. The Camera Club met at the Community Center for a brief session with few members present. The Friendship class will meet at Jennie Terhune’s home next Tuesday night November 22. Mr and Mrs Loyall Hunt hosted recent guests Mrs O M Masters of New Castle and Mr and Mrs Emerson Masters of Richmond.
The Junior Class hosts a Thanksgiving Food Market at The Citizen Office on Wednesday November 28. Readied items include dressed chickens pies cakes cookies and candy for sale.
