Returning veterans may obtain a duplicate of the same Social Security card issued before military service by applying at the nearest Social Security Board field office. The veteran must provide name birth date and parents names to match the original number. processing takes a few days.
Mrs. 8. L. Trabue of Rushville, a local school teacher, entered Methodist hospital Saturday for observation and treatment. Mrs. Charles Pickering returned home Thursday from Henry County Hospital in New Castle and is improving. Clara Delinger returned home Thursday from St Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Mr. Delinger, who had eye surgery, is improving.
Walter Mann of the first house west of the A and L Market lost both legs in a railroad accident at the Container Corporation of America local plant last Tuesday afternoon. He had worked there 20 years and was crossing tracks from the office when struck. Amputations followed after his legs were crushed, and he was taken to Methodist Hospital in an ambulance retaining consciousness during transport. As of Wednesday night he remained in an oxygen tent and was reported to be doing as well as could be expected.
Fire at Dr Pfeiffer's Pride Farm north of Carthage on Thursday night November 15 destroyed buildings and stored hay and corn. Loss in buildings estimated at 15000 with stock and tools bringing total to about 25000. Manager Will Chapman oversaw the property. Pfeiffer resides in Indianapolis. Insurance partly covers the loss.
Fred M. Vinson, Secretary of the Treasury and former War Mobilization head, will address the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce annual meeting at the Scottish Rite Cathedral on Tuesday November 27. The luncheon aims to host about 1500 people. Eugene Pulliam helped recruit Vinson, with plans for further Victory Loan Drive events to be announced as Vinson’s Indiana schedule is set.
Dr Clement T Malan notified school officials that under the 1945 emergency act dated March 7 every teacher is entitled to five days sick leave for 1944 1945 and for the current year. The leave is cumulative for six years allowing up to 30 days paid illness absence in six years.
Rush county discharged veterans aiming to enter Indiana University as freshmen may begin a special half semester from Monday November 26 to February 2. Courses include English composition and literature American history mathematics business accounting and speech. The program, announced in Bloomington by Wendell W Wright director of the Office of Veterans Affairs, responds to rapid demobilization and veterans eager to start courses before the next IU term February 11.
The Carthage high school band performed a program in the Arlington high school gymnasium. Members included Max Manche, Jack Tweedy, June Kinder, Donald Cook on cornet. Sue Kinder, Sue Ann Truitt, James McCowan on clarinet. Patricia Truitt, Charlotte Moore on violin. Ross Manche on trombone. Barbara Lukens on baritone. Virginia Collins on baritone. Lois Reames, Glennie Mann on drums. Joyce Carson on piano.

The Ripley Farm Bureau will meet Monday at the Carthage Community Center. A cooperative supper at 6 30pm features the Rush County Farm Bureau Band with 50 members followed by a concert. Warren O Hara of the State Department will speak. Officers for 1946 will be elected. Public invited. bring a basket and table service. The band performs at 7 30.
Mrs. Florence Penrod of Mari will present films about the work of the W C T U at the Community Center Theatre at 7 30 o clock on Tuesday November 27. Public is invited to attend.
The community service will be held at Carthage Friends Church on Wednesday evening November 21 at 7 30 o clock. Rev Howard Crim will deliver the Thanksgiving message with Dr J T Scull and Rev Basil Stultz assisting in the service as the community gathers for worship and gratitude.
Funeral services were held at 2 PM Monday at the Church of God in Indianapolis for Mrs. Ethel Tice James. Interment followed at Crown Hill Cemetery. A Rush county native, she died Friday in a Greensboro nursing home after a three year illness. She married William James and leaves two daughters Verle and Ruthie Jo, plus her parents, six brothers, a sister, and a cousin.
The Indiana Department of Conservation announced surplus beaver pairs are available for free distribution across Indiana. Donald Hughes says about 20 pairs will be given to suitable areas with ample cottonwood and soft wood. Prospective buyers should be prepared for a dam as beavers are trapped where their dam building interfered with farming.
Harold R. Gibson of Carthage has been separated from the Navy. The Public Information Office at the U S Naval Personnel Separation Center in Great Lakes Illinois released the information.
Eddie Stephens 21, torpedo mate second class, serves with USS Caperton in home waters of Japan as part of Task Force 35 and 53. Caperton participated in Gilbert Islands, Marshalls, Bismarck Archipelago, western New Guinea, Marianas, western Caroline Islands, Leyte and Luzon and supported Asiatic-Pacific raids, Okinawa defense, and attacks on Tokyo and other Japanese cities.
Mrs Bayard Baker learns her cousin Pfc Ernest Earhart, long reported missing, has been located in San Francisco and is now at Fletcher General Hospital Cambridge Ohio. He was a prisoner of the Japs for three years and three months.
Sam Gold Jr is enrolled at Air Line School in Kansas City after being diverted from Municipal Airport in Indianapolis. The move places him in aviation training under local program auspices.
The Kids Kanteen will be open for high school and junior high school students. Younger children must be accompanied by parents. After the ball game Friday night hot sandwiches and drinks will be served.
Mr and Mrs Richard Gibson of Carthage announce their daughter Patricia Kaye born November 11 at 9:00 a. m. weighing six pounds nine ounces at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Mr Gibson recently completed four years in the Navy and Mrs Gibson is the former Beatrice Church of Carthage.

Lions Club dinner outlines upcoming events to support the 7th War Loan drive including a November 26 film showing at Community Center Theatre in Carthage. Also planned is a December minstrel show and a recap by new Carthage basketball coach Clayton. Three members of the state winning livestock judging team attended.

Carthage Raiders defeated Raleigh in a double overtime thriller at Raleigh last Friday night after opening the season with a 45 to 31 win over New Salem on November 3. Kenny Schneider led Raleigh with 15 points as Carthage prevailed in the second overtime. The second team game went to Raleigh 24 to 18.
Mrs. Harry Elder reports her son Master Sergeant Carl Elder of Seattle Washington has arrived safely and will soon be home. He will receive an honorable discharge from Camp Atterbury.

The sale of subscriptions to legal residents yielded 101 dollars for the senior class funds.

The U S Naval Training Center Bainbridge Maryland reports SF3-c Rayburn Blair Fitch of Carthage has been honorably discharged from the naval service at the Separation Center Bainbridge.
News reaches Mr and Mrs A L Tuttle publishers of the Citizen a telegram from their son S-Sgt Robert F Tuttle saying he has landed at San Francisco. He expects to reach Camp Atterbury next Sunday and plans to enter private life after six years of service.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Manche and son Larry and Misses Lois Reames and Charlotte Moore attended a Bloomington concert last Sunday given by the Indiana University orchestra. Miss Rosemary Manche is identified as a member of the orchestra.
Mr and Mrs Jesse Henley of Carthage mark 50 years of marriage with open house on Sunday November 18 from 2 30 to 6 and 7 to 9 pm for relatives and friends and a noon family dinner. They have lived in the community and in the Henley home and are active in Carthage Friends Meeting. Mr Henley served 14 years as township trustee and 4 years as Rush county auditor 1929 1933.
