Indiana begins its annual Red Cross campaign with an estimated 30 000 volunteers. Last year 121 000 members were enrolled across 103 chapters and officials aim to exceed a 10 000 member increase this time. High government backing and widespread public support accompany the drive.
The Woman's Literary Circle met with Eva Sipe. Ella Coffin and Edna Henley spoke on Jewish suffering and race during the Crusades. Bertha Newlin joined as a member. The circle joined the Red Cross and invites members to the Institute of International Relations and Conservation at Jackson township school with speakers from Cambridge City and Newcastle. A covered dish luncheon follows. The Missionary Society of Friends meets next Wednesday with Rebec ca Healy leading. responses will honor Thanksgiving.
Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Beher and Mrs. Grace Phelps hosted a dinner and bridge gathering at the Kopper Kettle Inn in Morris town Monday night. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. John Dagler of Allentown PA, Mrs. Ramona Pickett of Rushville, Mr. Ray Gurley of Charlottesville, and many others.
The East Street Christian Church members held a welcome party for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mc Manus and family at their new home Wednesday night. Seventy five guests attended. Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Publow and daughter included Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Phelps, Mrs. Maude Porter and daughter Jean, Bazil Hegecock, Mrs. Anne Phelps and daughter Mabel, and Anne Mildred McClarnon.
A penny menu shows how a dollar feeds four with items like hot broth liverwurst and Swiss cheese platter potato salad loaf bread and butter and floating island. It describes simple recipes for broth and a tomato juice jelly filled loaf with instructions to chill and slice for serving.
Four states send about 1300 youths to Chicago for the 4-H Congress amid a broad educational program. The event includes a matinee horse show, style contests, and a parade ending with national winners to be announced. Hotels, railroads, and civic groups plan banquets and activities at the International Live Stock Exposition.
County Agricultural Agent Ev Brown spoke at the local school as the junior class of Carthage Y School presents the three act Lost A Chaperon on Tuesday November 27 at the auditorium. The play follows girls at a summer camp awaiting a chaperon then shifts to a college boys camp and ends with the arrival of the lost chaperon. Tickets go on sale next week and the date remains open.
The Carthage boys dropped a 19 to 18 heartbreaker to Charlottesville Friday night after a tight back and forth contest. The teams traded points throughout with the lead changing often and the decisive basket coming in the final seconds. Carthage reserves won 18 to 12.
The list presents students honored for two months, naming grades 2 through 12 with multiple names per level. Notable surnames include Henley, Miller, Alexander, Crosely, Carr, Hill, Gardner, Henley, and many others.
Ruth White promotes Try Our Crown coal mined from the Harlan seam in the heart of Little Black Mountain. She touts its purity and low ash as the highest quality domestic coal.
The Ripley Township Historical Society will hold its first meeting at the Library on Tuesday evening November 20 at 6 00. A covered dish luncheon follows the business session. Members are asked to bring relics and their histories, with service for all.
Mr and Mrs Arthur White were in Indianapolis on Saturday. The brief item notes their presence in the city for the weekend outing.
The Ei Church hosts a mid week worship at 7 00 pm and choir rehearsal at 7 45 pm A Ladies Friendship class meets Wednesday at Lillian Colbert home with Vera Wilkinson and Mrs Ralph Moore as assistant hostesses.
Friends Church plans 10:30 services with a sermon series titled The Church and Modern Life. A youth service interrupts on November 25, then December features the study of the Poetic Books of the Bible. The pastor hosted visiting youths from Columbus JC who shared a basket lunch at the parsonage.
A special Thanksgiving service will be held at Hannegan Christian church on Sunday with Bible school at 9:30, morning worship at 10:30 themed We Thank Thee Lord, noon Thanksgiving dinner, and 2:00 afternoon service with guest speaker Samuel Hawthorne. The day marks the fourth anniversary of Pastor George Holwager’s ministry, who begins his fifth year January 6, 1935.
The first day of the week's Yearly Meeting Conference occurred at Walnut Ridge with a noon basket dinner. Reverends Sayers Spitler Furbay and Elliot led discussions on church matters. Next meeting at Raysville this Friday with the same speakers. services at 10 1 30 and 7 30 a m are planned.
Robert Moore traveled to Indianapolis on Monday for a business engagement. He met local contacts and explored potential partnerships during the visit.
