Lowell Adams of Manilla out husked rivals by a razor thin margin at the state contest near Anderson. Adams produced 684.88 pounds to top Donald Hiday of Anderson who husked 684.6 pounds in the allotted time. The event drew over 500 spectators with 17 high schools represented. Adams received a silver cup and a gold medal at a banquet after the contest.
Mrs. Al J. Carr underwent a major operation at the Methodist hospital in Indianapolis Saturday.

Mrs. Robert Hale living four miles northeast of Morristown was held up and beaten Wednesday at 9:30 am as two men in a brown Ford V-8 followed her south of Manilla. They forced her from the car, assaulted her, and she was taken to George Theobald’s home in Manilla in critical condition. The suspects headed south toward Greensburg.
A Chevrolet sedan owned by H M Unger of Morristown and driven by his son Richard overturned after hitting a three foot ditch near Marietta en route to Mt Auburn for the first basketball game of the season. Passengers Miss Jean Lamb Miss Jane Tremor and Messrs Richard Pauley and H M Unger sustained minor injuries.
Indiana's fourth annual Crow Control Contest will start New Year’s Day with cash prizes and game birds for participating conservation clubs. Virgil M. Simmons, conservation commissioner, said clubs may request entry blanks anytime. Each 100 crow feet submitted earns clubs a choice of one quail or one pheasant released in their community. In three prior contests, 104 clubs contributed crow feet for 485 quail and pheasants, distributing 1 223 birds, while crow numbers and depredations declined. Regulations remain similar to 1936 rules and clubs must file a formal entry with the Division of.
A southbound Big Four passenger train plunged from a forty four foot embankment near Fairland during an ascent to a bridge over Big Sugar Creek. Ten cars derailed after crossing the bridge, caused by a defective rail. Dispatcher Frederick A. Gaugh of Indianapolis then killed himself hours later. Two other men, Edwin Veail of Cincinnati and Robert True of Lawrenceburg, were killed in the wreck.
Funeral services were held Sunday for Mrs. Fred Sims who died Thursday morning in Madison from cancer. A Carthage widow, 52, she was known in the community and the former widow of Sims Drygoods owner Fred Sims. Burial followed at Spencer cemetery near Terhune. Survived by her mother Lizzie Sims and two sons Dwight and Fred Jr.
The annual Indiana Farm Bureau convention will be held November 18 to 20 at Tomlinson Hall in Indianapolis. Speakers include E. J. Poag of Chrysler on salesmanship, Leroy Hoffman of Purdue on soil conservation, and L. A. Williams of the Illinois Agricultural Association. Hassil Schenck notes past attendance around 5,000 and predicts a return to normal turnout.

Judith Evelyn Wagner daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Wagner married Donald L Addison son of Mr and Mrs Bearsaddison in an eleven o'clock ceremony at the Christian church parsonage in Carthage Rev George Holwager officiated. Edna Leman sister of the bride was matron and Alvin Leman was best man with Howard Earnest as another attendant. The couple will reside in Homer after a short homecoming period. Addison works at the Container Corporation plant in Carthage and is a former resident.
The Hoosier Motor club notes Indiana law requires posting both gasoline price and taxes at retail outlets. Gas tax ranges three to eight cents per gallon including the federal levy, with total taxes often near the pump price. In 1935 the average gas price was thirteen and a half cents with taxes just over five cents per gallon.
North American stock men and farmers join international entrants for the 37th International Live Stock Exposition at Chicago Stock Yards. From November 28 to December 5 the event features pure-bred herd displays, prime market animals, and crops, with contenders from France Belgium Scotland and Canada plus Australian wheat samples.
The Carthage Bluebirds fall 20 to 19 in a hard fought opener. Wilkinson led 17 to 9 at halftime as Carthage rallied late with Ruby and McDaniel scoring to narrow the gap, but could not overcome the early margin.
Checks for the second instalment of 1935 property taxes totaling 685729.82 for the Public Service Company of Indiana Northern Indiana Power Company and the Traction Light and Power Company were mailed to 69 county treasurers. Rush County received 909.35, about 5.50 per meter or 45 cents per month. Vigo County led with 151672.29 for the Dresser generating station.
William F. Lingenfelter aged 59 died Friday morning at 5:30 at his Manila home from heart complications after an eighteen month illness. Born September 17, 1877 in Shelby county he was the son of Thomas and Laura Politt Lingenfelter. Survived by widow Lorca Mahan Lingenfelter and daughter Frances at home, plus three children from a former marriage Otis of Indianapolis Mary Hawk Carmel and Edgar Shelby county. one brother Clyde Fountaintown. two sisters Ada Stark Connersville and Hanna Mafford Burlington. two half sisters Bell Davis New Castle and Alice Dean Indianapolis. six grandchildren. Funeral service held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at Manilla Christian Church with Rev. George Ross officiating. Burial in Manilla cemetery.
