Mr and Mrs Gerald Shanahan welcomed a son born Saturday at Rush Memorial hospital The father is a Prudential Insurance representative for the area.
Mr and Mrs Russell Leisure of Carthage R A attended the funeral services for Robert F Stanley a former Carthage resident held Sunday at Lynnwood Presbyterian church in Cincinnati.
The Carthage Parent Teachers Organization meets Tuesday night November 12 at 7 30 p m at the Community Center. William F Smith secretary treasurer of the Rush Decatur National Farm Loan Association will speak He recently spoke in Wisconsin to three clubs All parents and teachers are urged to attend Refreshments will be served.
The Altar Society sponsors a Turkey and Ham Dinner at St Rose of Lima Church in the church basement on Sunday November 10 serving from noon to three. It is the sixth annual dinner with adults at 1.25 and children at 75 cents. Committee chair Mrs Henry Stager is assisted by Mrs Ross Tweedy and Mrs Carl Rhim.
Charles Moore has been ill the past week while convalescing at home. Vern Plummer was admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital Saturday evening. Mrs. Ella Nelson stays with her daughter Mrs. Lavenne Philips in Lawrence Indiana. Mrs. Roscoe Brown returned home last Thursday from Rush Memorial Hospital.
The Carthage Friends Church held Family Day with a 10 30 worship service and a noon church dining room dinner. Special music was provided by Sharlee Kyser Stella Humes Maude Porter and Alta Carr. Rev. Robert Shockney illness led Mrs Shockney to welcome guests and the afternoon included visitation. Fifty five guests attended dinner.
A 21 member Fletcher Methodist Church delegation attended a MYF Youth Rally in Bloomington. The event featured group singing a De Pauw play and a talk by Rev. George Harper on Living It Up. Attendees included Jeannine Terhune Carol Todd Sue Siler Pam Hunt Deanna Carroll Sue Mosier Beth Foust Barbara Foust Dorothy Edwards Bill Robertson Lois Hawkins Gene Miller Karen Graff Jim Terhune and accompanying adults.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Overman of Carthage will observe their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday November 10 with a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Overman and sons at noon. They were married 60 years ago on November 11.
The M Y F held a church meeting Monday night with a Bible reading. Stan Lynch led Junior High and Rev Davis led High School in a lesson on dating. Lois Hawkins called the business meeting and 32 attendees adjourned to recreation. Secretary Jeannine Terhune announced plans for a Christmas play.
Carthage sent Kirby Overman and Kelly Veach to Columbus for the state student council convention theme Learning Today Leading Tomorrow. John Kling of Indiana University spoke on science and leadership urging awake commitment to science to maintain leadership.
Ora Clayton resigns from the Town Council and Lawrence Apple is appointed to the seat. Stanley Hawkins fills the vacancy caused by Grant Henley’s death. Maurice Henley elected president with Albert Ray as vice chairman. Other members include Ralph Moore and Forrest Marshall.
The PTO held its Halloween party on Thursday October 31 at the Carthage Community Center. A downtown parade for masked children circling the square concluded with awards by judges Harold Dixon Harold Taylor and Bruno Lupato for categories including smallest dressed best ghost funniest ugliest prettiest most original best tramp and best couple. Refreshments of sandwiches and cider were provided by PTO parents.
Sunday afternoon and evening visits filled homes from Cambridge City to Knightstown and Greenfield. Guests included Ulrichs, McCorkles, Wyatts, Cats, Van Duyn and McQuade, with several families traveling from Indianapolis and Greenfield. A 4 o'clock wedding in Greenfield highlighted the day.
Mrs. Frank Alexander, president of the Carthage American Legion Auxiliary, and Mrs. George B. McNabb, secretary, attended the presidents and secretaries conference of the Indiana Department of the Auxiliary in Indianapolis. The event began with a Friday morning business meeting at the World War Memorial and a Friday banquet at the Antlers Hotel featuring National Auxiliary President Mrs. Pat Kelly and a musical program by Mrs. Paul Newman and Knightstown Children’s Home residents.
Carthage Blue Raiders defeat New Salem 62 to 43 as Pat Watkins scores 31 and Bill Parish adds 16 in a tight defense led by a strong zone. New Salem struggles with 4 field goals in first half and 13 of 57 for the night.
A high speed pursuit near Knightstown ends when a speeding driver crashes across U S 40 and is struck by a second car carrying two Richmond men. Passenger James Tompkins 18 of Carthage suffered head injuries and received oxygen at Henry County Hospital. Driver Jetha Dunbar 21 fled on foot. Two other passengers Billy Ratliff 17 Knightstown and Fred Snedigar 16 Shirley were unharmed.
Mr and Mrs E E Collier of Cincinnati were Saturday guests of Mr and Mrs Russell Roland during a social visit.
A large crowd attended Rush Co Home Demonstration Club Achievement Day at the American Legion building. New officers for the Home Demonstration Council were installed by Mrs. Fred Bell. A noon luncheon was served at the Durbin Hotel for about 200. A style show preceded lunch with costumes from past and present. Members from Mixers Club Carthage and Ripley Homemakers displayed outfits. Awards for perfect attendance were given to over 50 members. Carthage plans a new Post Office building within a year with a 32 by 40 foot cement block structure and modern interior. John Downey of Knightstown is general contractor.
Mrs Elmer McMichael Sr wins an upright home freezer donated Saturday by a Rushville supermarket. The presentation mark a local promotional event.
Mary Patton six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Patton had an emergency appendectomy at Rush Memorial Hospital Saturday night in a reported operation.
Mrs. Ethel Ball 75 of R R 2 Carthage died Monday morning at 9 10 after a two month illness. Widow of Otto Ball she was born March 4 1882 near Morristown and lived in the area for over 50 years. Surviving sons Harold and George two half sisters Italia Morrison and Loretta Litterer. Funeral 2 p m Thursday at Thompson Hampton Funeral Home with burial in Asbury cemetery Morristown. Rev Basil Stultz officiated.
Mrs. Frank Kolbasinki aged 80 died at her Anderson Texas home on October 25 after months of illness. She leaves four sons and six daughters. Services were held October 28 in Anderson with Dr and Mrs H L Hensler in attendance before returning to Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Frank Hampton oversee renovation at Thompson Hampton Funeral Home. Recent improvements include indirect lighting and fresh green paint in the entrance and three front parlor rooms. New draperies and furniture are to be installed soon with plans to remodel the entire downstairs.
Frederic Z. Gottlieb manager of the Indianapolis News and Star substation died last Wednesday of a heart attack. He worked in newspaper circulation for 19 years. Survivors include widow Mary son Allen and sister Louise Wortman. Roy Small Dale Earnest and Stan Collins attended the services in Shirley Brothers Hill Chapel in Indianapolis.
Robert F. Stanley 66 of Cincinnati died last Thursday at 12:05 p.m. at the Veterans hospital Norwood after a stay since April. A Carthage High School alumnus, he worked for Carthage Container Corp and Container Corp in Cincinnati. Survived by wife Margaret Gray, son Allen of Cincinnati, two grandchildren, sister Mrs. Avery Rawls, brother Rev. Rupert Stanley, and nieces and nephews. Services were held Sunday at Lynnwood Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati.
