Carthage Lions Club held its monthly meeting at the Community Center with President Frank Hampton presiding. Plans for a ladies night dinner and program with Garden Club members and their husbands were finalized for Monday June 14. Fish fry events were set for June 18 and 10.

Spring Tax Funds Certified for Distribution to Tax Units

A total of 1,128,960 dollars in county taxes has been collected and certified to County Auditor Arthur Malson for distribution. Treasurer Mrs. Virgil Grinstead reported that collections since last November exceed amounts due, due to penalties on back taxes and delinquent payments. Delinquent spring installments are few, due May 3. Certified totals include Rushville City 327,952 and numerous townships and towns such as Washington, Glenwood, Union, Noble, Richland, Rushville Township, Jackson, Carthage, Ripley, Posey, Walker, Orange, Center, and Anderson, with 776,445 from real estate and 352,514 from personal property.

Henry Stinger Honored by Rush County Historical Society

Henry Stinger of Indianapolis retired curator of the Indiana State Museum and former Carthage resident was honored at the Rush County Historical Society spring meeting at the Durbin Hotel. A scroll was presented by John N. Hughes Clark Offutt and Joe Pike. Many attendees have been society members since its 1940 organization by Effie Marsters and A. L. Gary.

Rushville Alumnus Dr Clair Maple Receives Distinguished Award

Dr Clair Maple a Rushville High School Class of 1934 graduate and Ames Iowa State University mathematics professor received the distinguished alumnus award at the RHS Alumni Club banquet held at the Elks Club. He earned degrees from Earlham College University of Cincinnati and Carnegie Tech and joined Iowa University staff in 1949 becoming professor in 1955.

Henry Jessup underwent major surgery at Rush Memorial Hospital. Cornelia Beher of Rushville convalesces at home. Jessie McGeorge of Carthage had April surgery in California. Jerry Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Brown, had minor surgery in Muncie and returned home. Donald P. Smith Rites Wednesday

Donald P. Smith 37 of Franklin died Monday after an eight month illness in Johnson County Hospital. Born Noblesville February 4 1928 he was a Technical High School Indianapolis graduate and Mississippi Southern College alum employed by Hoosier Farm Bureau Insurance. He is survived by his wife Barbara Davis and three children Phillip Diedre and Todd, plus three brothers and three sisters. Services were held at 10:30 am Wednesday at Vandiver Parsley Funeral Home in Franklin.

Carthage Native Named Indiana Conservation Aide

David H. Ruby of Carthage has been named administrative assistant to John E. Mitchell Indiana conservation director. Ruby age 22 is brother of State Rep John A Ruby of Carthage and will earn a degree from Indiana University next January. He previously served as treasurer of the 10th District Young Democrat organization.

Two Rush County welfare board appointees named

Judge William F. Marshall appoints Arthur Winfield to fill Elmer Linville Richland Townell seats and reappoints Anna Guide to the Rush County Board of Public Welfare. Terms run June 1 this year to May 31, 1949. Marshall withholds sentencing in burglary case of Duane Gorman Carthage. Gorman 18 pled guilty. released during good behavior and placed on probation.

First Lamb Pool Scheduled in Rush County

The first lamb pool of the year is set for June 2 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Cowan's Stockyards in Rush County. Now in its 25th year, five pools will be held monthly starting June, with 17 779 head consigned over 24 years and prices totaling 26 490.05. Paul Graue will grade lambs this year and may visit farms for sorting on pool day. farmers should contact the County Extension Office by Tuesday noon.

Boy Scouts of America program seeks sponsors in Carthage

Carthage appeals for community help to start a local Boy Scouts program. Sponsors from churches or organizations are needed, with training available for leaders. At least four men and a Den Mother are required to lead groups of eight boys, with parental involvement vital to develop boy character. A meeting for interested residents will be announced soon.
