David D. DeWitt a 36 year old papermaker and Patricia Mae Todd a 24 year old school teacher, both of Carthage, obtained a marriage license. Lilburn White was admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital on Saturday for pneumonia treatment and is slowly improving.
Rush County AS C office hours extend to 8 p.m. on Monday May 29 and Wednesday May 31 and June 1 to allow farmers to sign up for the 1961 Feed Grain Program. The June 1 deadline remains.
Hannegan Christian Church completes plans for Daily Vacation Bible School from May 29 to June 9 with a closing program on Sunday evening June 11. The theme is Living for Jesus with classes from Nursery through Teen-Age led by Mrs. Norma Ellison and Mrs. Lois Liggett. Refreshments will be served after daily sessions.
James Poalston resigns as Wilkinson coach ending a three year tenure that included a county baseball title and a Hancock County tournament crown plus a conference basketball tie with Charlottesville. He is a Muncie native and Ball State graduate.
Mrs. Fred Flick was guest speaker at the Glenwood Garden Club 28th anniversary meeting. Members of the Connersville Garden Club attended as guests.
Following Carthage commencement Mrs Joyce Rhoades and family hosted guests including Marion Rodewald Linda Marlene Graff and William Schmidt of Indianapolis and others from Shirley Kennard Kokomo Mays Greenfield Knightstown and Carthage for Monday night refreshments. The event mirrored a prior baccalaureate gathering with extended families attending at several homes.
The 80th annual Carthage High School commencement at the Community Center honored 24 graduates. Birch E Bayh Jr of Terre Haute spoke on democracy and duty as the student body received awards including American Legion Citizenship Medals to Cathy Ruby and Billy Muir and the Literary Circle Scholarship Cup to Cathy Ruby. Diplomas were issued by C M DeMunbrun as Rev Parker gave the benediction.
The Fletcher Methodist Church hosted baccalaureate services last Sunday night for the Class of 1961. The program featured an organ prelude by Mrs. Hubert Hunt, processional, and invocation by Rev. Paul Mayfield. Harry Cooper of Charlottesville Friends Church delivered the address. The Tune Teens performed "Bless This House" and "Halls of Ivy" before the benediction by Rev. C. C. Fields of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
The Alley Cats bowling league closed its season with a banquet in Shelbyville. Twenty eight members attended as secretary Mrs. John Wood announced final standings and cash prizes led by Gutterbuckets at forty dollars and Joyce's Fashion Shop at thirty five. Other prizewinners included Knightstown Body Shop Carthage Hardware Knightstown Elevator Lucky Strikes TN End Grocery and others.
MISS CATHY RUBY daughter of Mr and Mrs Clyde Ruby was named Valedictorian at commencement exercises Monday night. She won a Kappa Kappa Sigma scholarship and will enter Methodist Hospital School of Nursing Indianapolis in September. She held NHS president, co editor of Four Ways, and was 1960 Girls State alternate, plus the local Legion Post girl citizenship award.
Sunday visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Claude Rigsby of Marion Indiana and Mr. and Mrs. Herbie Beher. Mrs Basil Hedgecock of Denver Colorado visited at the Gardner home with relatives. The Hendersons hosted their daughter Mrs Joe Leavitt and Mr Leavitt of Fortville and Mr Richard Henderson of Greenfield. William Schmidt and Marlene Graff of Indianapolis attended Carthage Community Center commencement. Graff then stayed with her parents Joe and Mrs Graff. Fred Flick and family recently joined a Boy Scout Court of Honor in Indianapolis where grandson Stephen Castner earned the Eagle Scout Award.
The Manilla Post Office will dedicate services at 2 p.m. Sunday. Postmaster John Solomon says the building, completed from postal department specs, has been occupied since last fall with the ceremony delayed until now. A postal service speaker and Manilla school band will perform. staff includes a clerk and one rural route carrier.
On Wednesday May 31 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. the Carthage Citizen will photograph children at the Community Center for Kiddies Kalendar. United Studio of Elkhart Indiana provides child photographers with speed lighting. No charge or obligation. parents need not subscribe. Appointments via 565-5385.
Madeline May Jones 16 of Knightstown and Robert Nash 21 of New Castle died when their southbound car lost control after a curve at speed and hit a guard rail, post, and tree near the Center Christian Church. Glen Cox 18 and Claudette Hamilton 17 were seriously or moderately hurt, Jo Ann Jones 16 sustained a broken collar bone. The accident occurred about 2 a.m. amid fog. injured went to Henry County Hospital. Jones was a Mays High School senior slated to graduate next September.
Carthage High School Alumni Association held its annual meeting in the high school gym. Returning graduates toured the building, enjoyed a smorgasbord, and heard reports from committees. The memorial service honored 175 graduates who have died, with remarks on memory and legacy as the group planned new officers and reflected on the school’s history.
Gary Siler son of Mr and Mrs Russell Siler from the class of 1961 received a Schneider Scholarship in Motor Transport to Tri-State College Angola Indiana The award provides $250 toward first quarter expenses and is renewable if conduct and progress remain satisfactory He must carry a full schedule and maintain a 225 honor points to credit hours ratio, and notify the committee if he withdraws during any quarter.
The Arlington Christian Church will run Daily Vacation Bible School from June 5 to 16 for children aged 3 to 13. Sessions occur weekdays 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. with a closing program on Sunday June 18. director is Mrs. Wilford Kuhn and assistant director is Mrs. David Davis. theme is Living For Jesus.
Gerald Carmony Rush County School Superintendent elect and Manilla Lions Club member was elected governor of District 25F at the 40th Annual State Convention in Indianapolis. The district comprises 70 clubs in southeastern Indiana including Indianapolis.
Ronnie Fannin of Carthage and Marvin Heim as alternate will represent the local American Legion Post and school faculty at the Hoosier Boy's State convention at Indiana University June 17 to 24. Fannin is sponsored by the Legion Post and selected for scholarship leadership and service to veterans. Eugene R. Gardner and Harold Taylor are Boys' State chairmen.
Arlington hosts opening night games with Columbia beating Arlington 32 and Siebert's defeating Carthage 5 to 2. Cooley and Rucker homer for Arlington while Cooley goes 2 for 4 to lead losers. Siebert's Markley homers as Carthage falls despite MaGee doubles and a Magee triple. Billy Aker will be away May 29 through June 5.
Burl Magee 70 of Carthage died at his home after a 19 month illness. Born Marion March 7, 1891 he worked at Alsta Container Corp. Survived by five brothers and a sister with funeral services at Hampton Mortuary Carthage conducted by Rev. C. C. Fields followed by burial in Carthage Cemetery.
William G Frost 64 of 201 W South Street Greenfield died at 1145 am Saturday at home Born May 30 1896 in Hancock County son of James L and Lara Baldwin Frost lived in Greenfield most life except 12 years in Missouri From 1927 to 1938 worked at Nehi Reverge Company Indianapolis later ran restaurants including one in Carthage Survived by widow Frieda Frost two daughters Mrs Paul Logan of Morristown Mrs Robert Mills of Greenfield one son William F Frost four grandchildren one great grandchild several nephews Funeral services 10 am Tuesday Pasco Memorial Mortuary Reverend Cyrus T Herod officiating Interment Park Cemetery
A demonstration plot on John Mills farm in Jackson Township includes 24 corn varieties, each replicated twice. Varieties focus on blight resistance and contrasting yield and maturity with local standard crops. Sponsored by Rush County Better Crops Association with Purdue University and Rush County Extension Service.
Mr and Mrs Odell Pitts and their children spent a pleasant day Sunday in Madison Indiana visiting local sights and sharing family time with relatives and friends.
