Carthage Lions Club met at the Community Center on May 15 to plan a public program on atomic radiation and welcomed James Whitfield who gave a Scouts progress report. Lion Leonard Jackson was elected president for the coming year as members adjourned with refreshments.
The Carthage group gathered May 7 at 7 30 for a meeting led by President Steve McClurg. Susan Skinner led a song, roll call cited 12 regular members and new member Frankie Brooks, minutes approved, old and new business discussed, Linda Wells read the lesson, group sang, Benediction, adjourned to refreshments and recreation.
Finley R. Nelson, 60, slowed to turn on U.S. 40, was struck from the rear by William G. Johnson, 42, both near Charlottesville. Johnson suffered severe leg lacerations and other injuries as his car was demolished after skidding about 400 feet.
Golden Dawn Farms in Carthage sold five purebred Aberdeen Angus cows to Leon Kendall of Flatrock Indiana. The sale highlights the farm’s continuing cattle program and transactions with regional buyers.
Mrs Marlin Sandefur of Carthage underwent major surgery Friday at the Methodist Hospital. Her room number is 452 B. Vonnie Church returned home last week from Rush Memorial Hospital and is slowly improving. Mrs Minnie Bart of French Lick Indiana is recuperating from a broken hip at the home of her daughter Mrs William Dix. She can walk some with a walker. Mrs Bill Loveaul entered Rush Memorial hospital this week for treatment. Myrtle Carfield convalescing at home shows improvement. Russell Reddick's condition is unimproved at his home east of Carthage.
The American Legion Auxiliary announces 1961 Poppy Day on May 26 and 27. Volunteers from the local unit will sell Memorial Poppies made by disabled veterans to honor those who died in World Wars and the Korean War and to support veterans’ employment.
The calendar lists senior activities from May 19 to May 26 including Senior Day, Spring Music Festival at the Community Center, Awards Day, Alumni Banquet, Baccalaureate with Harry Cooper at the Methodist Church, Commencement with Birch E. Bayh Jr. at the Community Center, a senior trip to Washington DC and New York City, school dismissal, and report cards issued.
Caleb Marsh Albert Ray Paul Scott and Frank Alexander enjoyed a fishing trip from Friday to Monday in Wisconsin.
Mrs Laura Sandefur attended an Avon Presidents Branch Dinner Tuesday at the Marott Hotel in Indianapolis.
The C E S Carthage Chapter O ES held a regular stated meeting on Wednesday May 10 at the Masonic Home. Worthy Matron Katherine Liebrandt led a Mothers tribute. A call meeting for initiation is set for May 25 at 8 p m with refreshments served by Hazel Souder Mary Taylor and Helen Ruby.
Mother's Day dinner at Mrs. Clayton Todd's home brought together forty two guests including Mr. and Mrs. Robert Todd Perkinsville and families, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Todd Rushville and families, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dean Knightstown and families, and other Todd, DeWitt, and Brooks relatives from Carthage for a cooperative meal attended by descendants and guests.
Eight members of the Carthage Home Garden Club toured Hillsdale Way side and Flowerteria nurseries in Indianapolis and various greenhouses. Lunch at Buckley's Restaurant at Cumberland was shared by Mrs. Albert Ray, Mrs. Fred Flick, Mrs. Louis Humes, Mrs. Loyal Hunt, Mrs. Donald Ruby, Mrs. Thomas Bush, Mrs. Ross Tweedy and Mrs. Guy Ewing.
Rush County earns a 4H silver award for 1960 based on enrollment and standard club counts. The county totals 828 4H members with 460 in 17 standard clubs and 33.3 percent participation. The event runs June 6 to 8 at Purdue with Prairie Farmer and Purdue extension noting 16 prior awards and a plaque or engraved bar for repeat winners. County agent C L Spuller states this is the 17th year Rush county has qualified.
Mike Ruby of Ft. Bragg North Carolina is on a sixteen day fur lough with Mrs. Ruby and daughter and his parents Mr and Mrs Clyde Ruby and daughters. Mrs. Oliver Earnest and Mrs. Lena Newsom visited Mrs. Flora Markland at Arlington last Saturday. Bert Piper of Morristown visited Saturday evening with sister Mrs. Winifred Gray and Miss Thelma Gray. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene S. Gardner and sons attended a Mother's Day family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Swain and family in Finley Indiana.

On September 6 1949 forty two prisoners including Kay Addison Carolyn Blessinger and Gary Clayton were admitted to the William Bundy Reformatory for sentence. Warden James Reynolds assigned Cell 1 and Juanita Cox as guard and counsellor who within nine months taught reading. The group formed a marching gang led by Clara Jo Henley with Judy Kennedy and Brenda Dalrymple as sergeants at arms. After nine months they moved to Cell No 2 and several others were transferred while some convicts were released from the list. Continued on Page 3.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Jarrett of St Joe Indiana announce the engagement of their daughter Janet Elizabeth to Paul E Jackson son of Mr and Mrs Leonard E Jackson Readers are told Janet is a Riverdale High School graduate and will finish as a Home Economics major at Ball State Teachers College in June Paul Jackson is a Carthage High School and Purdue University graduate who teaches Industrial Arts at Mooresville Junior High School.

The Golden Anniversary Mile Race trials resume Saturday at 11 00 CDT and Sunday at noon with 69 entrants competing for 33 starting berths behind the Ford Thunderbird pace car on May 30. Gates open 8 00 Saturday and 9 00 Sunday with practice daily 9 00 6 00 and 50 cent admission.
