Joseph E Porter has purchased the Ed Carroll property on North East Street and is constructing a new three unit apartment building at the rear facing north toward Third Street. Each three room unit will have its own entrance and heating system.
Mrs Ora Clayton of Indianapolis underwent back surgery at Methodist Hospital last Friday. Clarence Tubby Henley convalesces at home after hospital return. Mrs Oran Henley, Mrs Winifred Gray, and Mrs Catherine Weaver are all reported in Carthage area care or observation, with Weaver admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital for observation and treatment.
May 30 observed as a legal holiday at all postal installations. No window service or mail deliveries by rural carriers. No incoming or outgoing mail. Lobby remains open for boxholders.
The Carthage East St. Christian Church Bible School runs June 1 to 5 from 6 30 to 8 30 p m each evening. All boys and girls from nursery through Juniors are invited to attend.
A pitch-in dinner will be held at East St Christian Church on Sunday May 24 at noon after services. A free will offering will help fund the boys and girls trip to the Indianapolis Zoo after Bible School. Everyone is invited for fellowship.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Roberts and son Todd and her mother Mrs. Velma Todd of Carthage return home Monday from a ten day trip to Colorado Springs. They visited Cpl. and Mrs. Jerry West, also in Colorado Springs, where Mrs. West is a granddaughter of Velma Todd and former Sodra Todd of Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Gary Stewart and daughters Cynthia and Teresa of Carthage spent the weekend camping at Pokagon State Park in northern Indiana. They visited her parents Mr and Mrs James T Miller near Quincy Michigan. Cynthia and Teresa stayed to visit their grandparents.
The Fletcher Methodist Church will run a Vacation Bible School from June 1 to June 12, 9 to 11 a.m. Children aged 3 and up from the community are invited to participate to learn songs crafts and stories about Jesus the Promised Saviour.
Postmaster William Alexander attended the State Convention of the National Association of Postmasters held at the Terre Haute House in Terre Haute Indiana from Wednesday through Saturday. He served on the audit and finance committee.
Mr and Mrs William Fred Magee and family and Miss Patricia Sipes depart for a week in Florida. Mrs Magee and Miss Sipes will visit relatives and stay with Mr and Mrs Marshall Monk in Jacksonville. Mrs Monk and son Ronnie return home by plane after a week. They are accompanied to Weir Cook Airport by Delmer Sipes and John Cass family from Cumberland Indiana.
Miss Clara Jo Henley of Indianapolis was a weekend guest of Tubby Henley and family here.

Jim Wells president of the Lions Club presented the track trophy on the last day of school. The trophy honors the boy with the most points over the track season and the Freshman Scholarship Cup is awarded to David Sharon Hunt.

Mr and Mrs Albert Terhune hosted the Fidelity Class gathering at the church annex on Sunday evening. Marvin Johnson presided over devotionals and a brief business session with prizes awarded to Marvin Johnson Bob Nigh and Rev Jack Wallace. Refreshments were served to attendees including Rev and Mrs Jack Wallace and children Debbie and others.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Reveal hosted a cooperative supper at their Anderson home Saturday for the Carthage School 1933 class reunion. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Omer Heim and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Porter, Mr. and Mrs Hoyt Addison, Maxine Rigss, and Bayard Baker from here.
Charley N Hudson aged 73 of Charlottesville died at Hancock Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born February 9 1891 he was a longtime Pennsylvania Railroad signalman for 32 years and retired seven years ago. Surviving include three children several grandchildren two sisters and two brothers including Vinton Hudson of Carthage. Services were held Thursday morning at Pasco Mortuary Greenfield with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery near Carthage.
East Street Christian Church honored mothers on Mother's Day with a surprise reception planned by male members. After worship, women were invited to the basement for a devotion, decorated cake, and beverages as servers attended to guests. Organizers included Ted Skillman Thomas Bush Bob King Clyde Ruby James Ellis and Robert McKain among others.
May is the month of remembrance and Poppy Day observed Friday and Saturday by American Legion Auxiliary members. Volunteers will distribute red crepe paper poppies made by disabled veterans to honor the dead and aid veterans and war widows and orphans. The campaign carries the message Wear a Pop and Honor the dead with Service to the living.
Mrs. Hubert Hunt hosted a birthday dinner Sunday for Mr. Hunt. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ruby, Mrs. Flora Hunt, and Miss Pam Hunt, weekend guest from Butler University.
Housewarming guests of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Shutt Jr. Tuesday evening were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lloyd and Jimmy, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Myers and Mr. and Mrs. Robert McGraw and Bobby, all of Rushville.
Mrs. Markes McClurg attends the funeral of her nephew Liam Mendenhall of New Castle at Main and Sons' Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon. He died Saturday from injuries sustained in an automobile wreck two weeks earlier.
Mrs C Franklin Peek Jr of Chesterton Indiana announces the engagement of Phyllis Susanne Peek to J Kirby Overman of Carthage Indiana. Both alumni of Ball State Teachers College with sorority and fraternity affiliations. The wedding is set for June 14 at the First Christian Church in Valparaiso Indiana with public invitation.
Robert E. McKain of Carthage is invited to a Civil Defense conference in Richmond on Thursday May 28 at 9 a.m. in the First Federal Savings and Loan Building. Indiana University and the Department of Civil Defense host officials from six counties to learn about nuclear threat effects and protective measures. Richmond City Attorney Kemper will welcome attendees and Robert S. Bates will close the session. The event is part of a statewide Extension Training program to train instructors for shelter management and radiological monitoring.
Fifteen members attended the Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority meeting held Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Everett Stanley near Mays. Mrs. Robert Walker was co-hostess. Mrs. Hugh Weber presided. Mrs. Ralph Pearson reported on the National Convention in Indianapolis. Bingo was played and prizes awarded. Refreshments followed.
Mrs Lyle Plank and children hosted a birthday anniversary cookout last Thursday for Mr Lyle Plank. Guests included Mr and Mrs Gene Strong and son of New Castle, Mr and Mrs Bill Muir Knightstown R2, and Mr and Mrs Ronnie Magee and two children.
A lengthy list of visiting relatives and friends from Indianapolis to Muncie and beyond attended the Alumni banquet and lingered in town for weekend visits. Numerous households hosted meals, dinners, and casual gatherings at homes and local venues, including Windsor, Hartzler, Whitfield, and Leisure families, plus Johnsons and Sullivans. Travel spans Rushville to Anderson, Nashville to Olive Hill Kentucky, with guests from Greenfield, New Castle, and Fort Wayne.
More than two hundred alumni and guests gathered at the Community Center for Carthage High School’s 12th annual alumni meeting. President Windsor led the program with a memorial service and class rolls, honors for the classes of 1914 and 1939, a concert by student musicians, pictures of old Carthage scenes, and a lively evening of re connections and the Alumni Ball.
Five lamb pools are planned this summer in Rush County led by John R. White. The first pool is June 3 at Cowan Stockyards Rushville from 6 to 9 pm with other pools on July 8 August 5 September 23 and October 21. The program marks its 24th year and has added about 26 490 dollars over past years by pooling quality lambs. Paul Graue will grade lambs onsite and farmers may arrange farm visits by notifying the County Extension Office.
Public Service Company of Indiana and Local 1393 IBEW announce a three year wage pact benefiting about 1,365 bargaining unit workers. Hourly gains between 2 and 13 cents yearly, with general wage increases and journeyman adjustments. Major benefits include medical insurance, a half day paid holiday, shift pay premium rise, service watch pay boost, and a liberalized vacation policy starting 1966.
Mr and Mrs Oliver Earnest stopped by Sunday to see Mrs Mary Unger in Fountaintown, sharing a brief social call with neighbors and friends.
