The Frields church hosted a well attended recital Tuesday night by Mrs. A. J. Carr's piano students. Selections included Rhodora Swaying Daffodils and diverse ensembles led by Jimmie Carr Frances Tuttle and Maria Henley among others.
Mr and Mrs Harry Pitts and Mr and Mrs Grant Henley attended the annual convention of the Tenth District Rural Letter Carriers association at the College Avenue M E church in Muncie last Saturday. Mrs John Mills was re elected president and Mrs Russell Dearinger of Rushville was re elected secretary treasurer. Charles Turner of Selma was elected president of the Rural Letter Carriers association. Selma was chosen as the 1937 convention site.
The American Legion Auxiliary of Rush County plans Poppy Day on Saturday May 23. Poppies honor World War dead and support disabled veterans and their families with proceeds. Disabled veterans with little government pay receive priority for each finished poppy.
The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, first natural color motion picture, stars Sylvia Sidney Fred MacMurray Henry Fonda Fred Stone and Spanky McFarland. It depicts a Blue Ridge feud and Kentucky mountain life on screen at the Auditorium theatre Wednesday May 27. Plan to see this outdoor romance celebrated as a grand entertainment.
The national convention of the Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority met last weekend at Lafayette with headquarters at the Fowler hotel. Local representatives from Sigma chapter included Mrs. Raymond Kennedy, Mrs. R. J. Tweedy, Mrs. G. B. McNabb, Mrs. Paul Norris and Miss Anna May Newsom.
A vociferous critic laments widespread laxity in school leadership. The speaker decries tolerance of compromise between moral standards and expediency, urging decisive action to restore discipline and accountability.
A house owned by Elby Newsom on the east side of the "V" was burned to the ground early Sunday at about 1 30 am. Firefighters arrived too late, and the origin remains undetermined since the dwelling had been unoccupied for a long period.
Mr. J. R. Behr, Robert Ewing and Leonard Sullivan joined seven lamb club members on a Friday tour of Rush County farms. They gathered at Spencer Bogue’s home in Arlington for guidance from Purdue animal husbandry expert Henry Mayo on lamb care. Demonstrations at Bogue’s farm covered Hampshire animals, trimming, and drenching, with visits to Wilfred Catt and Alfred Rigsbee’s farms. Plans for a sheep school this fall were discussed.
The Margar et Hill McCarter Literary club met May 14 at Mrs Geo Carwein’s Arlington home. Officers were retained. a Sunshine Gift Plan was adopted. A letter from Margaret Hill McCarter of Topeka was read. a paper on Famous Mothers of Yesterday and Today was given. a Mother's Day history was shared.
Mrs Bessie T Robertson a 76 year old widow of W F Robertson of Homer was found dead in her Homer home Sunday night. She had dined with the Arbuckles and was to return for supper when William Arbuckle found her about eight o clock in a Davenport death believed from heart trouble. Survived by a brother and three sisters all in Oklahoma Miss Carrie Thomson Miss Lou Thomson Mrs Ada Leach and Robert Thomson. She had lived in Homer ten years and was well known there.
County clerk Dale Fisher said the voter registration and transfer period for the fall election is open from last Friday until October 5. Those who registered for the primary but did not vote need not re register unless they moved, which requires a transfer. the period also targets unregistered young voters.
A 1928 Whippet owned by Ed Hewitt Sr. was sold at public sale in front of Joe Moore’s garage to satisfy a judgment in favor of Moore for 25 dollars. The bid brought 24 dollars.
Richard Ewer, driver for Omar Baking Co., was cleared when the trial ended due to lack of prosecution. No ordinance against pedlar licenses appeared in town records. Omar Baking offered to pay $30 yearly for bread delivery rights in Carthage. Ewer had been arrested for pedlar license violation. abatement was filed and a legal ordinance will be passed by the town board.
The Blues for the Reds banquet marked the Friends Church event with about 110 attendees. Blues conceded gracefully and entertained rivals while youths played games on the lawn. Adults held a church council meeting with committee chairmen outlining work and proposed improvements and voting to hold another gathering.
Mr C Earl Downey of Arlington received a telegram from the Crosley Military Band director at WLW stating that his composition The Speedway Courier would be played on their Thursday night Salute to Cities program. Downey directs the Arlington Concert band and has composed several numbers, showing long time interest in music.
The Rushville Chamber of Commerce 4 H committee members Will J. Leach George Sites Jack Knecht George Davis Horatio Havens and Harry Perry met with M J Huxley assistant county agent in the court house Friday night to appoint sponsors for the Rush county 4 H club Every 4 H boy in the county was given a Rushville business man as a sponsor for the year and visitation committees for township clubs were also named.
Town Board held a called meeting at the Town Hall and awarded the waterworks contract to John Dehner of Fort Wayne for 49 thousand 434 dollars and 96 cents.
The Town Board met to let the water works pumping station contract. Worthington Pump and Machinery Corporation of Harrison New Jersey submitted the lowest bid at 1450.20 dollars. The award awaits Indiana State Director of the P W A approval. The board also approved an ordinance regulating licensed peddler fees, to be published next week.
Mrs Irvin Renegar of Arlington Indiana publishes Margaret Hill McCarter’s letter to the Margaret Hill McCarter Literary club of Arlington. The Topeka Kansas author thanks the Rush county Posy township club for adopting her name and expresses interest in future correspondence and club activities.
Rush and Decatur counties will hold a church school rally at Milroy on Wednesday May 27 at two o’clock. Rev. Joseph G. Moore of Rushville will lead the event with local pastors and Sunday school leaders assisting. A seminar for officers and teachers is led by Dr. Alfred Haeseras ben sng va cation for the Mo it Episco church of Indians. Dr. Backus speaks at 7:30 PM and leads a mass meeting for Sunday School workers, inviting all to bring a box lunch and stay for the night session.
Mrs Emma Sharpe of Rushville announces the marriage of her daughter Emma Louise to Bill Guy Addison son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Addison of Arlington. The ceremony was Sept 3 1935 in Rapid City SD Rev L J Sheldon officiated in the presence of Miss Henretta Farley and Paul Ingram of Connersville. Mrs Addison works at Lola Mae Shoppe Rushville. Mr Addison is a Arlington High School graduate and employed in Green.
Miss LaVaughn Ryse daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Ryse of Arlington wed John R Woods of Arlington in a single ring ceremony at the First Baptist parsonage Rushville The Rev C H Wallace performed the service in the presence of Mrs Grace E Allen and Mrs Wallace The newlyweds will live in Arlington where Woods works in the papering business
The town board announces a thirty day muzzle leash and confinement rule via the city news service. Citizens are urged to secure dogs as stray animals risk drastic penalties, including possible execution if owners fail to comply.
Mr and Mrs Leroy Moore of near Arlington welcome a baby girl born Thursday morning weighing five pounds. They name her Colleen Pearl.
Mr and Mrs Jesse Leisure of near Carthage welcomed a ten pound baby boy named James Allen born last Saturday at home.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mabelle J. Weaver will be held Friday morning at Hisey and Titus Funeral Home in Indianapolis with burial at Knightstown cemetery. She died Wednesday noon and was the daughter of Al Johnson formerly of Carthage. Survivors include her husband Clarence Weaver a daughter Helen of Indianapolis and son Ben Weaver of Ann Arbor Michigan.
Last Sunday J R Furbay pastor of the local Friends church accepted an urgent call to First Friends Church Marion and tendered his resignation here effective September 1. He and his family will move to Marion to begin new duties leaving Edgar Stranahan to depart for a religion chair at Friends University Wichita. Several men had been shortlisted for Marion but the Furbays received the call directly.
Kenneth Corn 23, son of Lemuel and Mrs Corn, died from injuries in a Sunday morning auto crash near Harrison, Ohio. He died at St Marys Hospital Cincinnati after suffering a broken back and fractured collars. Thomas Woods 20 and Raymond Nicolson of Rushville escaped with minor injuries. Funeral held Wednesday at Church of God Rushville.
Mr. William Newbold postmaster at Rushville and his wife hosted the Tenth District Postmasters Association meeting at St Marys auditorium in Rushville. Seventy two postmasters and guests enjoyed a three course chicken dinner and an entertainment program by Miss Mary Heaths dancing chorus before a discussion on postal service issues. A follow up meeting in New Castle on Wednesday May 27will feature a Post Office Inspector on handling bonus bonds. The next regular meeting is set for Winchester on Sunday July 12 with Postmaster Charles A Wall and wife as hosts.
The Choral club will host a guest night on Thursday May 28 at the Christian church. It is the second event of this kind and the public is invited to attend.
Herbert Anderson, seriously injured in an automobile accident last week, was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis Tuesday. He is reported to be in serious condition.
