Carthage Corporal Whitfield Honored by General LeMay
Corporal Charles Whitfield of Carthage Indiana and other B 29 ground crew at Marianas bases received commendation from Major General Curtis LeMay for their role in eight consecutive days of low level incendiary raids on Japan. Whitfield, an aircraft mechanic, and his team kept the bombers aloft through near nonstop operations. Whitfield, a Carthage High School graduate who joined the Army in 1943, is cited along with his mother Mrs Bethie Whitfield.

Ripley Man In Charge Of May Sheep Dipping Service
Wallace Cook of Ripley township reports his Cook Sheep Dipping Service dipped 1079 head of sheep and lambs last week. The service aids Rush County farmers in cooperation with the Rush County Sheep Committee and the Extension service to improve the local sheep program. Available only in May. contact Cook or the county extension office to participate. Sheep ticks are a concern with many ticks reported this year by local shearers.

Funeral of Mrs Anna Hufferd aged 83 at local church
The funeral of Mrs Anna Hufferd 83 was held at the Christian church on Thursday afternoon. She died at a hospital in Indianapolis after a period of illness. She was the widow of Rev Omer Hufford and is survived by a daughter Mrs Sally Rogers of Indianapolis and a naval grandson. Burial followed at Simmons cemetery.

Pfc Charles Colwell Loses Other Leg After Wounding
Pfc Charles Colwell of the Westland district, wounded west of Berlin after thirteen months overseas, had the lower part of one leg amputated earlier and the other leg later. Mrs Colwell is informed by Chaplain Fisher. Colwell’s parents in Carthage are Mr and Mrs Louis Henderson.

Jamaicans Arrive to Work at Canning Plant in Rush County
Five Jamaicans arrive at the DeSchipper canning plant and live in a camp house. In Rush county a total of sixteen workers have arrived, eleven at Glenwood canning factory. They come from a group of 750 arriving in Cincinnati for Ohio and Indiana work. Prisoners of war will be available after mid August to assist on farms and tomato picking.

In a letter to his father Earl Nowotne of Carthage Max Nowotne S Sgt. in General Patton's 3rd Army was seriously wounded April 19 by shrapnel and bullet to the left shoulder during a clash with German SS troops. He writes from a hospital bed that things are improving and may allow him to come home soon.
