Dr. J. T. Scull acting minister Hubert Hunt leads services at 10:30 with Mrs Arthur White as assistant superintendent. A bouquet will be given to the oldest and youngest mother and the day is observed as a day of prayer.
Pvt Carlos Brooks is at home on a 15 day furlough from Granite City Illinois. He serves at the local unit and will return after the leave ends.
Rushville welcomes a wide array of musical instruments from the Roy Mitchell collection on May 20. Roy Mitchell, a longtime band master, has gathered many instruments for public viewing, and Henry Stinger highlights the opportunity for students and music lovers to study and appreciate a diverse display.
The Walnut Ridge Quarterly Meeting of Friends will be held at the Walnut Ridge Friends church Saturday at 10 o'clock. Murray S. Kenworthy, executive secretary of Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends and former pastor of the Carthage Friends church, will be the speaker.

The Walnut Ridge Friends held a Friday missionary meeting at Flora Hunt’s home with 10 members and one guest, led by president Mildred Nigh. The W S C S met Thursday at Cora Fenner’s home with 25 members and 6 guests, sharing echoes from Connersville district and Carrie Chapman Catt as a topic. Junior 4-H leaders met at Kids Kanteen with 66 members and 4 guests, installing new officers and planning Kiwanis Camp delegates. Numerous Sunday visits listed include families from Mooresville Knightstown Indianapolis and Greenfield among others.

Fourteen year old Roy Loveaul is back home from Riley hospital after a Friday arrival by Thompson ambulance. He expresses it is good to be home with family and friends following his confinement at the hospital.
Tests in Indiana show seed corn treated with mercury or non mercury fungicides improves germination in April and early May when soils are cold and wet. After May 20 or in warm soils the benefit declines. Non mercury fungicide performs at least as well as mercury dust in controlling seedling blight.
A Clark Dwarf apple tree developed at Iowa State College yields fruit in two to three years. Dr. T. J. Maney reports trees ten years old stand five to seven feet high. First year crops of two or three apples, second year about a dozen per tree, with 12 to 16 trees fitting the space of one standard tree.
Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal directed a nationwide WAVES recruitment surge with a 2000 women per month quota through year end. About half of selections will join the Hospital Corps as the Navy plans for ongoing Pacific warfare demands and increasing naval hospital casualties.

Indiana State Police report 25 percent of 168 traffic fatalities in the first quarter involved two car crashes with a vehicle parked in the roadway. Colonel Austin R. Killian says such crashes accounted for 43 percent of rural accidents of this type, prompting intensified enforcement.

A telegram from the War Department informs Earl Nowotne that his son S Sgt Max H Nowotne was wounded while serving with General Patton s 3rd Army. He enlisted in 1942 and has been overseas sixteen months, 30 years old, married to Ruth with an adopted son Max Jr in Terre Haute.
County Extension offices answer farmer questions about corn borers during wet weather. Entomologist H O Deay of Purdue says the season is not advanced enough for definite pest data. He warns moths may emerge longer, advises planting between May 20 and June 5 to reduce damage, noting late May plantings yield better than early June in this area.
