Potato blight control guidelines for Indiana growers

County extension advises spraying or dusting potatoes to combat early and late blight. Bordeaux mixtures or 10-10-100 Bordeaux blends are common, with Dithane as an alternative. Copper dusts offer some protection but less effective than spray. Use 5 to 8 applications at ten day intervals, applying 150-200 gallons of spray or 40 pounds of dust per acre per app. Include DDT insecticide with sprays or dusts. Potatoes benefit from regular treatments, especially in cool wet seasons, to raise yields. Late blight remains a serious threat, with eight of 27 seasons affected in Indiana and a 1945 outbreak noted as most destructive. Include both insecticide and fungicide in treatments.

Indiana Farmers Urged to Use Manure for 1946 Crops

Purdue University warns that a million dollars worth of plant food could be wasted on Indiana farms if manure is not valued and spread this spring. Only ten medium manure piles per township unspread would cause the loss. Manure increases in value with grain prices, with estimates from Purdue placing value at 5 to 6 dollars per ton. Prompt spreading conserves fertilizer. leaching and heating losses reduce nitrogen, potash, and organic matter.

Manure Management Aims Prompt Soil Application

Farmers should apply manure promptly after it is produced to maximize value. Light per acre applications are preferred and if spreading before plowing is not possible it can be worked into soil during disking for corn or soybeans. Timely soil incorporation and prompt application are key to effective manure use.
