Ruth Henderson won the annual high school oratorical contest held Tuesday at Fletcher Methodist church. Nine contestants, all girls, spoke from four classes. Henderson received the first prize and a gold cup, with Louise McCorkle second and Phyllis Cooney third. Judges were Wilbur Kendall and Charles DeMunbrun.

Mrs. Anna H. Phelps received word of the death of her brother Albert T. Hill at his La Grande home on April 17. He was born in Ripley township, moved to Oregon, and married Myrtle Price in 1894. Survivors include his widow, a daughter Mrs. Alice Watkins of Myrtle Point, a son Major Thomas P. Hill in service, three grandchildren, and a brother Ernest Hill of Whittier California.

The Carthage Businessmen beat the Indianapolis 101 Bible Class 4 to 2 in a mid season tilt here Saturday. D Brown caught, Bob White pitched, with a home run by the visitors opening the scoring before Carthage answered strong for the win. Legion Post 316 In District Honors Shelbyville Legionaires
The Bertram Howard Post No. 316 hosted the 10th District American Legion convention in Shelbyville drawing over 1,000 Legion members for a two day event. Post 316 earned district colors for first place in membership for the past month and will keep them until the next district meeting. The program featured a Saturday band concert and a large parade led by Indiana leaders, followed by a dance with about 600 attendees. Sunday included a breakfast, memorial services for WWI and WWII dead, and an Eddleman airport air show.

Death of Shirley Marsh in Anderson
Carthage friends learned of the death of Shirley Marsh formerly a druggist in Carthage. He was ill for about an hour. Survived by widow and daughter Marietta. Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Albright Funeral Home in Anderson. Mr and Mrs Marsh visited Lineback home Sunday afternoon.

Forty nine scouts from five local troops competed in the Council First Aid meet in Richmond Indiana last Tuesday. Survivors include husband, daughter Marcella Bowen and grandson Ann Bowen of Indianapolis, plus five sisters and two brothers.
