James Neal, after 18 months in Europe, is in the United States and will soon be back in Carthage with his wife, Mrs. Neal, who met him in New York. They plan to occupy the Ben Neal home north of Carthage as Evelyn Neal, his mother, plans a June trip to California.
Mrs. E W Schneider at Hancock Memorial Hospital can receive visitors from 2 to 3 pm and 7 to 8 pm and will stay for four more weeks. She was trampled by cattle near Carthage Rt 1 a month ago, suffering serious injuries. Mrs Ora Clayton of Indianapolis remains under observation at Methodist Hospital. Mrs Winifred Gray, Mrs Oran Henley, and Clarence Tubby Henley are listed as remaining the same at their Carthage homes or local hospital care.
Bernita Logan, a Carthage High School senior, receives the Criscq Trophy for home economics excellence on Class Day May 1. Teacher Mrs. O'dessa Bieschke praises the achievement as an annual recognizing honor. Bernita, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lake Logan, plans to study at Leeds as a freshman next fall.
Carthage wins the East Central Conference title with 66 points edging defending champ Morristown at 60. Gatewood of New Palestine shines in hurdles and high jump as Carthage secures three event wins and six seconds. Meet details include results from high hurdles, mile, sprints, relays and field events with Carthage runners prominent in multiple top finishes.
Morton Memorial won the first county junior high track meet at Searson Track on Saturday. The team scored 111 points to edge Mil Foy with 99. Carthage 54. Glenwood 94%. New Salem 31. Arlington 19. Manilla 12. Raleigh 19. Moscow and Mays 2%.
A stated meeting of Carth Chapter 5749.F.S. will be held Wednesday May 13 at 8 p.m. A special program is planned and all members are urged to be present.
Thursday morning a attic fire at the home of Mr and Mrs Vonnie Church was fought by the Carthage Fire Department around 9 am. The blaze remained in the attic but caused extensive water damage throughout the house as furniture and belongings were removed, and the cause was not determined.
The Better Business Association of Carthage held its monthly meeting at the J and E Cafe. Joyce Harrold, president, announced a sidewalk sale and consignment auction set for Saturday June 20. A family dinner was scheduled for Sunday June 14 at 6 30 p.m. at the Durbin Hotel. Public reminders will follow.
Rush Lodge 680 F and AM schedules a called meeting on the Fellowcraft degree for Friday May 8 at 8 p.m. in the lodge hall. Members urged to attend and participate in the specified degree work.
The Garden Club will meet on May 12 at Mrs. Rosa Tweedy's home for a day meeting.

Postmaster William Alexander received guidance from the Regional Director in Cincinnati Ohio noting rural carriers may still accept money order applications on Saturdays, with issuance deferred until Monday. The paper previously reported money order service will run Monday through Friday until further notice.
Larry Jordan received the Outstanding Athlete Award at a Carthage High School ceremony. Coaches presented a wall plaque listing his four-sport all around ability and multiple honors including Rush County and Rushville Sectional recognitions and scoring records.
Reta Stanley daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Stanley receives the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award for highest score on a written knowledge and attitude exam. The award was announced in December and again at the awards day program.
Mrs. James Neal arrived in New York City from Indianapolis by jet and met her husband at the airport. Pfc James Neal received his honorable discharge from military service this week.
Republican Don Robison of Shelbyville and Democrat John A. Ruby of Carthage were nominated for the new Joint State Representative post from Rush and Shelby counties. Ruby led with 4 220 votes in two counties, defeating James Muncie as Robison carried 2 912 and Hayes 1 738 in GOP. Rush and Shelby counties split votes, marking the first election after reapportionment paired Rush with Shelby.
The Carthage Lions Club will meet Tuesday May 12 instead of Monday due to Commencement at the Community Center on May 11.
Lewis Otho Hinton 79 of Carthage died 9 30 p m Friday at Rush Memorial Hospital after two years of declining health. A former Haldeman Ky clay miner and 10 years with New York Central Railroad he was born March 28 1884 in Carter County Ky and married Davie Bowen March 21 1918. Survived by wife three sons three daughters 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild with several siblings in Baltimore Kentucky and elsewhere. Services were 2 pm Monday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with Revs Bill Bray and Cleo Cox. burial in Town Cemetery with Masonic rites.
Rush County voters cast 4 370 ballots, 2 530 Republican and 1 840 Democrat, a 36 percent turnout. Winners include Dallas Hardwick for county clerk Kathryn Grinstead for treasurer and Robert L May for middle district commissioner. Barry Goldwater led presidential voting 1850 to 573. Ralph Harvey carried the district with 2235 votes.
