Dawmand Kanner, Rachel King, Mrs. Frank Alexander and Mrs. Paul Scott attended the 90th Annual Session of the Indiana Grand Chapter Order Eastern Star held Monday through Wednesday at the Murat Temple in Indianapolis.
After a luncheon at the Durbin Hotel in Rushville the Afternoon Bridge Club gathered at Mrs. Lindley Taylor home. Honors went to Mrs. Forrest Beck and Mrs. Wilbur McCorkle. Guests included Mesdames Thomas Bush Guy Ewing Forrest Moore Nelle Beher and Maude Barbour.
John A. Ruby and Bob Jones announce a joint coffee hour for May 2 from 2 to 5 PM at the Durbin Hotel in Rushville. The event invites the public to meet the candidates ahead of the May 5 primary.
Marine Private First Class Vergil J. Hendershott of Arlington Indiana serves aboard USS Yorktown an anti submarine warfare carrier. Yorktown was named outstanding ship of her class in the Pacific Fleet for the second year running and received the Battle Efficiency E from the Naval Air Force Pacific Fleet.
The Tenth District Christian Women's Fellowship Leadership Training Institute gathers at St Paul Christian Church on May 5. Coffee and book browsing start 9 to 9 30, program begins, nursery service provided, bring a sack lunch, coffee supplied, Blessing Box offering to be dedicated. A full program includes officers training a film strip Mario's Answer and a Workshop panel.
Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Stephens of Knightstown announce the birth of a boy. Mr. and Mrs. John Schmidt of R. R. J. Carthage are the parents of a boy born at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield.
Miss Pam Hunt is elected a member of Chimes for the coming year, an honor society for college women in their junior year based on scholastic achievement and campus activities. Initiation was held Sunday at the Holcomb Garden House. She attends Jordan College of Music at Butler University and is a member of Spurs, a sophomore honorary.
The Church of Christ at Little Blue River held a basket dinner Sunday April 26 at Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Weber Carthage R 2. Inclement weather moved activities indoors as members and guests played games and signed cards to mail to sick attendees. Forty two people attended the event.
Seven members of the local Garden Club attended the 33rd annual convention on the 23rd and 24th at the Elkhart Hotel in Elkhart Indiana. The theme was The Magic of The Four Seasons. Mrs. Forrest Moore was installed as District Director. Attendees included Mrs. Moore and six fellow members.
Demus Manuel 88 of Vevay was found dead in his home Tuesday. A retired farmer and gardener, he attended Vevay Methodist Church and visited often with son Lloyd Manuel in Carthage. Survivors include son Lloyd, daughter Minnie Richter of Mishawaka, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Wife and two children predeceased him. Services Thursday at 2 p.m. at Haskell Morrison Funeral Home Vevay with burial in Vevay Cemetery.
Lillian K. Durocher of Beverly Illinois 1829 W 103rd St appears in the current Who's Who of American Women. A former Kennedy, daughter of Forrest and Anna Rawls Kennedy, she is a composer and organ piano teacher with works performed by youth choirs and adult groups at Morgan Park Presbyterian Church. She belongs to Sigma Alpha Iota the National League of American Pen Women Crescendo and PEO.
Numerous local hospital notices report residents receiving care. Lucille Phelps and Ora Clayton undergo hip ailments with traction or convalescence. Clarence Henley remains in Community Hospital after three weeks as he shows little change. Ruby hosts Shelby County Democrats reception while Band Boosters plan meeting and several social and church events are noted.
The May schedule lists Senior and Awards Day May 1 at 2:30 p.m. Baccalaureate May 10 at 8:00 p.m. Commencement May 11 at 8:00 p.m. Other notes cover library books, lunches, dismissal May 14, and exam schedule for grades 7-11. Kimberlee Tweedy places tenth in the State Spelling Bee. National Honor Society announces officers and eligibility standards.
Mr and Mrs James Ellis attended the sixth annual Indiana Intercollegiate Band Program at Clowes Hall Butler University. The program featured nine students from Butler Ball State DePauw Evansville Indiana Central Indiana State Indiana University Manchester Purdue and Valparaiso with James Ellis Jr among the four trumpet players.
Alumni committee urges timely reservations for the Arthage banquet on May 13 honoring the 1914 and 1939 classes. Dance tickets are selling at Windsor's Ruby's and Hunt's Radio Shop, with no delays.
Postmaster William Alexander reports nationwide post office service adjustments effective May 9 1964. Money orders and box rent collections will occur Monday through Friday only. Information inquiries will run on a five day week.
Mr and Mrs Unn Fitch of Carthage and Mr and Mrs Ever ett Sherwood of Brookville returned home after a week in Shreveport Louisiana visiting Mr and Mrs Fitchs son A2C Orba Fitch and Mrs Fitch.
Voters in Rush County will decide on consolidating Ripley Center Jackson Posey Walker Orange Anderson Townships into a single school unit. The measure asks, Do you favor forming a school unit of the listed townships, with YES or NO on the machine.
A compiled list of polling locations across numerous townships including Carthage High School Arlington School Milroy Christian Church Hospital Sewing Room Graham Annex School Court House Havens School Belle Gregg School County Home W. P. Wolfal Co office Jackson School Mays School Raleigh School Gings School New Salem School and Richland School with precinct numbers and street references.
Carthage won the Rush County Track meet at Morton field with 88 percent points, grabbing six firsts plus the mile relay. Kit Porter and Richard Grizzell each earned two wins, Porter setting high hurdle and dual record marks and the mile relay team clocking 3:51.5. Relay squad members were Back Ellis Kemper and Porter with Morton and Mays runners also placing high in multiple events.
The upcoming primary on Tuesday May 5 features broad participation with party nominees and a pivotal school question on the ballot. Voters face contested Democrat precinct committeeman and delegate races in Ripley Township and Republican options for delegates, plus key county and district contests.
