The Rush County Federation of Women's Clubs elected officers at its eighteenth annual convention on April 24 at the Main Street Christian church in Milroy. Officers named were President Miss Charlotte Holman, Vice President Mrs L Newhouse, Secretary Mrs Ray Power, Treasurer Mrs Roy Beckner, and Director Mrs Bayard Baker. The next convention will be in Rushville. The event honored pioneer club women with Golden Jubilee tributes and awarded medals to Mrs Clarkson Gause in memoriam and to Miss Winona Newsom as oldest living clubwoman.
Mr and Mrs Howard Stout and son of Arlington and Mr and Mrs William Nelson visited Jesse Drysdale in the Masonic Home at Franklin Sunday afternoon. Drysdale who fell weeks ago fractured his hip is slowly improving.
A large crowd at the East Street Christian Church service club dinner heard Indiana State Highway Commission publicity man Marc Wagener discuss statewide highway projects and show slides of roads bridges and grades. Discussion noted potential right of way needs near twin silos and a future bridge project, with emphasis on community effort to secure a state road for Carthage.
Hiram Hadley Henley born March 28 1857 died in Richmond April 26 1940. He was a birthright member of the Friends church and a charter member of the Carthage Friends Meeting. Survived by Penninah Trueblood Carthage Jesse Henley Carthage Bertha Clark Richmond Lowell Henley Rushville and several grandchildren. Funeral at the Friends church Carthage with Rev. Murray S. Kenworthy and Rev. Charles Winslow. burial Riverside.
A small roof blaze at Bearl Miller’s farm home south of town was extinguished Tuesday morning with minor loss. Fire officials believe sparks from the chimney ignited the fire.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Henley Jr of Greencastle welcomed daughter Catherine Jo born at Lafayette hospital at 12 45 PM on Wednesday. Catherine Jo is granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Henley of Carthage. Mr and Mrs Jack Overman welcomed son John Kirby seven pounds born Monday evening at Major hospital in Shelbyville.
Indianapolis May 2 James M Tucker secretary of state and lone Republican elective official in the state house announced today he will seek renomination at the G O P state convention May 24. He is the youngest state official ever elected to a major Indiana office and among the youngest secretaries of state in the nation. He serves on the executive committee of the National Association of Secretaries of State and holds several memberships including the Scottish Rite Elks Knights of Pythias Indianapolis Press Club Junior Chamber Columbia Club and Friends church.

A fire Sunday evening about five destroyed the home of John Stewart in the south part of town. Flames spread rapidly. little furniture was saved. Fire truck arrived but water shortage limited efforts to save the dwelling. Firemen focused on saving nearby home of Mr and Mrs Luther Hall. Insurance status unknown.
Revival services at the Wesleyan church start Tuesday evening May 7 and run through Sunday May 26. The Mart Brothers of Fairmount lead the meetings with Rev Charles Mart directing song services and Rev Everett Mart delivering evening messages. Special music and singing add to the program nightly at 7 30 p m.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nigh on Market Street hosted their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday with over a hundred attendees. Families from Rushville Milwaukee Charlottesville Dayton Indianapolis Knightstown and more joined relatives and friends for decorated rooms nine gold and white cakes and refreshments.

Mrs Eunice Six Gilbert age 79 widow of William Gilbert died Tuesday afternoon at 4 10 o clock at her home. Born July 14 1860 she married William Gilbert in 1880 and had six children four living Ed Nellie Gurley Pearl Bowers and Frank Gilbert plus two grandchildren Jean Tipton and Gerald Gurley. Funeral services were Thursday at Thompson funeral home with Rev Murray S Kenworthy officiating and burial at Asbury Cemetery.
Public Service Company of Indiana Centr Indiana Power Company and Terre Haute Electric Company filed with the SEC an application for a plan to consolidate with Northern Indiana Power Company and Dresser Power Corporation into a new Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. The pro forma 1940 income would be 6.73 dollars per share on 50 dollar preferred stock and 1.55 per share on 25 dollar common stock. The combined service area includes about 780,000 people with 148,000 electric, 40,000 gas and 22,000 water customers for Public Service. Centr Indiana and Northern Indiana together serve about 67,700 electric, 6,700 gas and 3,800 water customers.
