Harris Named Putnam County Agent Effective April 16
Kenneth W. Harris, assistant county agent in Rush county, will become county agent for Putnam county with the new position taking effect April 16. A Knights town native, he moved to Rush county last July from Vincennes to join the county agent’s office and will soon move with his wife and family to Greencastle. Ripley Township 4-H Boosters met March 21 at the Carthage school to elect officers for the year, with Max Manche as President and 47 members present including Harris and Dwight David of Rushville as guests.

Double Tragedy at Dunreith Home
Mrs Evelyn Helms aged 19 and her sister Carroll Helm aged 12 died from carbon monoxide released by a heating stove in an adjacent room of the Helms residence one mile west of Dunreith on National Road. The older woman had been ill and the younger had gone to visit her. Mr Helms discovered the bodies upon returning from work at the Perfect Circle plant in New Castle.

Nine Carthage high school musicians competed at the Central and Southern Indiana Solo and Band contest in Terre Haute. Virginia Collins won 1st in baritone and Charlotte Moore 1st in piano. Patricia Truitt and Joyce Carson earned 2nd places in violin and piano respectively, with June Kinder 2nd on trumpet. Max Manche and Lois Reames each took 3rd in trumpet and voice, James McCowan 3rd in clarinet, and Barbara Lukens 3rd on trombone amid 1 099 solos and 317 ensembles with 117 in the state contest.

Carthage will host a supervised summer recreational program with junior and senior softball leagues. The Lions club endorses the plan with a $20 start donation, aims to form four junior teams for grades 4-8 and two high school teams plus town teams, plus a round robin schedule over ten weeks.
