Indiana Farm Bureau reports strong township meeting attendance averaging over 100 for four months and a 35 percent membership rise as of March 1 1940. The Farm Credit Administration pledges help to farmers while guarding cooperative credit stakes amid forecasts of larger cattle and hog markets and volatile prices.
Carthage Service Club hosted a Monday violin recital at Fletcher Methodist Church after a church chicken dinner for about ninety guests. Violinist Daryl Bryan Oakes played the Duke of Edinburgh on a valued Stradivarius, with Olga Porter at the piano, as a full auditorium enjoyed a program of Mendelssohn Svendsen Handel Dvorak Kreisler pieces. The event was organized by A B Thompson H G Stager and Claude Sipe.
Rush county youths Paul M. Winslow of Carthage and Bill Brown of Rushville were among Purdue University’s 442 students honored on the distinguished student list for the past semester. The honor provides a $30 semester stipend while maintaining high scholastic marks. Winslow is a junior in chemical engineering and Brown is a senior in electrical engineering.
After months of delay the State Highway Commission will take over the new Anderson to Knightstown state road designated as State Road 109. It will run along Columbus Pike through Madison and Hancock counties once Madison County secures additional right of way. Local efforts to create a state maintained link through Carthage to U S 52 are supported by county commissioners and the State Highway Commission with plans to begin right of way acquisition soon.
Mr and Mrs Howard Leisure announce the birth of their daughter Wanda Sue born Sunday morning at three o clock weighing nine pounds at City Hospital.
The 1940 Wildlife Poster Stamp series debuts March 16 in Carthage with 24 designs across categories of birds animals fish wildflowers and trees. Stamps cost 1 dollar per sheet or one cent per stamp, with 40 percent of sales proceeds aiding the local conservation club. Sale runs through March 30 at several local outlets.
Shelbyville judge and GOP candidate James A Emmert told Liberty voters that Indiana should remove about 25 percent of state jobs and reduce the payroll. He cited a 1932 to 1938 cost rise and urged lower bids, curb on official autos, and no new real estate tax, while defending a $1.25 to $2.00 tax cap.
Mrs. Jerry McDaniel living south of town fell on her home steps last week and fractured a hip bone. She will be confined to bed for several weeks due to the injury.
Miss Katrina Haramy returns from Jerusalem to speak Monday night at the Methodist church on April 8. Her talk titled Stranded covers her experiences in war torn Europe. Proceeds support sending the seniors to Washington this spring.
Engineers from the State Highway Commission and the U S Public Roads Administration will survey all grade crossings in Rushville and nearby towns Glenwood and Carthage starting March 25. The study covers visibility, street grade lines, rerouting options, traffic counts, and cost bases to improve safety and plan future construction.
Arrangements are being made for a Good Friday Union Service in Carthage on Friday afternoon from one to three o'clock. Eight churches of Carthage and the township are expected to participate and all citizens are invited. The program differs from previous years with the Choral Club in charge of music and the high school to participate. The Ministers Association and churches ask merchants to close their stores during the service to allow worshippers to attend.
Henry M. Sutton 81, formerly of this place, died Monday morning at his Ogden home from pneumonia after a year of declining health. Born July 25, 1858 in Carthage, he lived here 47 years and worked as a plasterer before owning Cottage Grocery and other stores. Surviving: widow Emma White, son Blaine Sutton of Sandusky, sister Mary F. Willcutt, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren. Funeral was Thursday at 1:30 PM at Ogden Methodist church. burial in Spiceland.
Rush Post 150 American Legion will sponsor the annual Easter egg hunt at City Park Rushville for children 6 to 12. The event starts at 1 30 p m with more than five thousand eggs to be distributed along with rabbits and chickens as prizes drawing hundreds of kids and adults.
Bloomington Indiana March 20 report lists high school pupils named as winners in the first two divisions of the Rush county meet of the State High School Latin contest. Division I winners include Philip Winslow Carthage Marialus Moore Rushville and Lois Ruth White Carthage.
The funeral services for infant Robert Henry Leslie, son of Mr and Mrs Albert Leslie, were held at the grandparents home Sunday afternoon at 2 o clock with Rev C L Shaw of Wesleyan Methodist church officiating. Burial followed in Town cemetery with A B Thompson in charge.
Ben Neal was taken to Henry County hospital for an afternoon operation on acute appendicitis. His condition was reported as good Thursday.
The Third Carthage high school oratorical contest hosted by the Carthage Service Club will be at East Street Christian church this evening March 22. The winner advances to the county contest in Arlington on March 27. Seven speakers, four girls and three boys, compete with finals medals presented by A. J. Carr. Judges include Revs. Murray Kenworthy, Wayne Newcum and C. V. McMillan.
The February 1940 health report lists 31 births and 18 deaths. Eighteen births occurred in Rushville city, 13 in townships. Six scarlet fever cases were reported in the county. Read lists include numerous named newborns and parents across Rushville City and surrounding areas.
