Receipts for the Rushville sectional net tourney fell about one third in the first weekend of March. Total receipts were 849.10 including 336 season tickets for 336 and 1466 single tickets for 513.10. Eight participating schools received funds for meals travel lodging and share of proceeds after expenses. Rushville center school received 200. Large expenses included referees 80 scorer 5 timer 5 policemen 12 janitor 5 extra help 52.50 balls 26.19 printing 14.46 tickets 12.50.
Rev. Charles Carter a missionary to Africa on furlough will headline a district missionary convention at Blue River Wesleyan Methodist church on Friday March 22. Afternoon service at 2 30, evening service at 7. Music by Richmond Shelbyville and Lewis Creek church members. Basket supper served. All are welcome.
The rebuilt Alhambra theatre in Knights Town resumes showing films on Sunday March 17 with Another Thin Man starring William Powell and Myrna Loy.
Mrs. Sallie Roper, over seventy, died Friday morning at home of her daughter Mrs. Harlan Tuttle in Carthage after more than four years of bedfast illness. Born in Louisville Kentucky she lived most of her life there before relocating to Carthage. Survived by three daughters Martha West Inez Allen and Harlan Tuttle and a son Buford A per Noblesville. Funeral held at 2:00 p m Monday at the house then moved to Noblesville for rites conducted by Rev Wayne Newcum of East Street Christian church. Burial in Noblesville Cemetery.
A half interest in The Carthage Citizen was sold to A L Tuttle of Rushville in a deal closed last Friday. Tuttle, an experienced printer, has worked on The Indianapolis News The Rushville Republican and a Columbus paper. He and his wife will move toward spring and relocate his printing equipment to boost service while the business continues unchanged.
The Carthage high school junior class hosts a St Patrick's party in the gym tonight from 8 to 11. The I S S C Home orchestra provides dancing music. Other entertainments are planned and admission is twenty five cents.
A sunrise service is planned at the East Street Christian church on Easter Sunday morning. An early breakfast of eggs and fixings will be served followed by a worship service led by the church’s young people. All Carthage residents are invited to attend.
Pre Easter observances are planned across the Methodist and Friends churches with a Good Friday service at the Christian church. The period is marked as the anniversary of Jesus last week, inviting participation in worship. The community churches call for turnout from residents, with involvement by the high school choir and merchants urged to close for the period and join in the service.
The Fletch er Methodist church held its midweek service at Mr and Mrs Walter Manche home. This week the service moves to Wednesday at Mr and Mrs J A Lineback home. Friends church midweek services were at Mr and Mrs Walter Dhonan residence with Mrs Olive Drysdale and Mrs Byron Ball leading.
Ben Bacon a farmer south of Carthage on the Arlington pike who had been ill was admitted to Major hospital at Shelbyville last week He has now returned home.
The Rushville Lions defeated Batesville 36 to 30 to reach the semi finals at Anderson next Saturday. They will face the red hot Lapel Bulldogs, with North Vernon and Crawfordsville also competing. North Vernon edged Greenwood Woodmen and beat Columbus to advance while Lawrenceburg toppled Connersville 43 to 30.
Mrs Ina Rhodes, who suffered burns from boiling water ten days ago, shows slight improvement. The accident occurred while she was working at the home of Mrs Ralph McClarnon.
In a No-Accident Contest covering Middle West canneries, DeSchipper Packing Company earned a perfect rating from Employers Mutual Liability Insurance Company of Wausau Wisconsin. They receive a handsomely engraved plaque for the 1939 canning season with no employee time lost due to accidents.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Phelps attend the funeral services for Mrs. Ann Louise in Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Louise is the mother of Indianapolis resident Mrs. Rodbert Westfall, a close friend of Mrs. Phelps.
Dallas Hardwick of Rushville announces candidacy for Rush County clerk subject to Republican primary voters in May. He has served as deputy sheriff the past two years and was previously sheriff of Rush County. He has long resided in the county and is a staunch Republican worker.
Bearl Miller was injured near here Friday evening while working with a team of horses. He was taken to Henry County Hospital in New Castle where doctors treated the knee injury and he was sent home.
The Home Economics club installed county officers Wednesday at the Arlington Christian church with about one hundred for dinner. Miss Lelia Gaddes of Purdue performed the installation. Ripley township attendees included Mrs. Mattie Publow Mrs. Emma Ruby Mrs. Joanna Gibson Mrs. Mary Bentley Mrs. Mabel Hogel Mrs. Eleanor Bush and Mrs. Lottie McManus.
Frank Webb of the area was severely scalded to the neck and arms while on shift at the Container Corporation last Saturday morning. He is reported improving at this time.
Walter Nelson shows slow improvement after a recent injury. Susanne Winslow and Jimmy Winslow suffer from whooping cough. Loren Munden is ill with flu. Clyde Elmer Ruby has a severe cold. Mrs John Clevidence remains unimproved.
Mr Bayard Baker, Mrs Baker, and Miss Irene Stewart visited Shelbyville Saturday afternoon in a social outing.
Helen Gatewood Tucker once of Morristown, now stranded near Danville Indiana, says she visited her parents in Morristown and Albuquerque while her husband Charles F Tucker ran a wide fraud involving life insurance policies. FBI and state officials chase Tucker through farm deals that defrauded widows and Indiana residents.
Alvan Sohn announces candidacy for joint state representative from Rush and Henry counties. He was born in Knightstown and has lived in Carthage where he and his father ran a garage and trucking firm. Sohn chairs Ripley township Young Republicans and serves on Carthage town council. He favors redistribution of gasoline and road taxes to benefit counties and local government. He has farm roots and this is his first major campaign.
Rush county Sheriff Paul Bennington announced to The Citizen that he will run for a second term. The World War II veteran and Republican activist holds his first term as sheriff and cites his merits and past performance. He serves with the Rushville American Legion post and has been a steady Republican worker.
Rev. Murray S. Kenworthy attended a peace conference in Centerville on Monday and spoke in the morning. He then joined events in Spiceland on Tuesday evening and Wednesday under the Peace and Service Committee of the Indiana Yearly Meeting.
With March 7 as the first day to file petitions for the May 7 primary, Rush county shows growing party activity. Candidates must file in the county clerk’s office between March 7 and April 6, with petition names tied to past election results. Voter registration is expected to rise as clerks are assigned. 300 to 500 names remain unregistered, making many ineligible to vote, including movers, name changes, those who skipped voting in 1938, and those turning 21 before November.
Governor Townsend designates March 17 to 23 as National Wildlife Restoration and Conservation Week in Indiana. Conservation clubs statewide plan public meetings talks membership drives and Wildlife Poster Stamp sales to fund local programs as the state highlights natural resource protection and outdoor recreation. The proclamation notes Indiana’s leadership in conservation and the Department of Conservation’s growth to twelve parks five memorials and twelve forests covering about seventy thousand acres with extensive public use.
