Reporter Hottelet Arrested in Berlin on Espionage Suspicion

The United Press Berlin staffer Richard C. Hottelet of New York was arrested early Saturday in Berlin on suspicion of espionage for an enemy power. German agency says the arrest concerns his private activities, not journalism, and President Roosevelt has asked the State Department to conduct a full inquiry.

Fletcher Methodist To Have Eight Night Revival

Fletcher Methodist church will host eight consecutive preaching services beginning Sunday night March 30th and ending April 6th. Dr Earl Naftiger pastor at Knightstown will preach as visiting preacher. The public is urged to attend this spiritual eight night series.

February Vital Statistics show births and deaths counts

The February report by health commissioners Drs. E. S. Wooden and Lowell M. Green lists 30 births, 21 deaths, and one scarlet fever case. Most births occurred in Rushville with 16 in townships. eight marriage returns were filed. Notable birth names include Marilyn Ann Buckley and John David Kirk among many others.

Foot Injury Sinks Mrs Wells After Fall at Henleys

Mrs. Claude Wells broke her foot in a slip and fall at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hamil Henley. She was transported to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

Indiana University Dedication Week Highlights In March

George McNabb of Carthage will participate in the dedication program for Indiana University's new auditorium from March 22 to 26. He will sing in the choral union during the Sacred Concert on Sunday evening March 23, with remarks by Rt. Rev. James E. Freeman. The week features a Lunt and Fontanne appearance, Lehmann and Melchoir recital, and a concert by Zino Francescatti with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Richard McNabb junior won first place at the annual high school oratorical contest held Friday night at the Friends church. Rosalind Stewart and Jo Ann Laird also placed, earning medals. McNabb earns the right to represent Carthage high school at the county contest at Manila school on May night March 26.

Indiana edition cites Samuel Hoosier origin of state nickname

The Indiana writers program, part of the WPA, released a theory tracing the Hoosier nickname to Samuel Hoosier a canal contractor in 1825 whose Indiana crews became "The Hoosier Men." The guidebook by Indiana, a Guide to the Hoosier State, includes 20 tours and will publish via Oxford University Press with Rush County included.

Tall Cedars Change Date for Initiation

The Tall Cedars of Lebanon have moved initiation services from April 31 to Thursday April 17 at the Shelbyville National Guard armory. Wilmer McNeely stated the change was due to Good Friday on April 11. Shelby county members and nearby counties are invited and asked to note the new time.

February Realty Trade Low Amid Few Transfers

The February realty trade shows only 28 transfers and deeds mostly for $1. Total value listed is $8,731. The largest purchase was by Mr. and Mrs. Daniel B. Funeral Attended by Carthage Residents for John Munden

New rural carrier Fred E. Flick of Holton Indiana is transferred to begin active duty April 1 on the route formerly held by Harry Pitts. He plans to move his family to the area in the near future.

Changes in Indiana gross income tax enacted in 1941

Indiana announces 1941 gross income tax changes effective this year. Notarization on returns is eliminated by Senate Bill 28 signed February 19. House Bill 14 lowers rates for retailers industrial processors laundries dry cleaners and casualty insurers with first relief on returns filed April 1 to 15 1942 for income earned January 1 to March 31 1942. The digest covers rate changes including retail 1 percent and 1 percent rates for eligible industries and new provisions for insurance carrier reserves and asset ratios.
