Carthage Lions held their regular meeting Monday night and heard Lt. Woods from the Air Defense Command discuss a Terre Haute filter center film and the urgent need for an observation plane spotting post in Carthage. He noted 127 Indiana posts, many operating 24 hours.
Regular stated meeting of Rush Lodge No. 580 F. and A. M. will convene at the lodge hall next Wednesday night March 7. Secretary Will Barbour provides the notice.
The Tenth District American Legion oratorical contest on Our Form of Government was held in the Rushville Legion auditorium Sunday afternoon. Linda Forst of Knightstown won and will advance to the zone contest as five entrants who had won local contests previously also participated. runners up were Joe Lacy Parker, Tom Stiers Route 4 Rushville, Nancy Crawford Greenfield, and George Shirley Richmond.
Wally Roberts of west of Carth age is ill with virus pneumonia and was admitted to Hancock County Hospital in Greenfield Sunday evening.
J Arthur Ball a former Carthage resident died at 10 00 Tuesday morning in the Gardner Rooming House Rushville where he had lived for 12 years He was born in Posey Township son of Samuel O Ball and Casey Addison Ball His wife Carrie Shaw Ball of Carthage died in 1926 Survived by brother Henry H Ball of Arlington and sister Mrs Bessie Rogers of Virginia One brother and four sisters preceded him Funeral services will be Friday at 2 pm at Master Sons Mortuary Rushville with burial in East Hill Arlington
Mr. E P McCrory 60 retired plumber died at his Rushville home Tuesday morning. Survived by widow Torla S McCrory son Herschel L of Indianapolis who married Vera B Miller of Carthage and four grandchildren. Services held Thursday at Master & Sons Mortuary Rushville with interment in East Hill cemetery.
Carthage Raiders dropped a 66 55 decision to Arlington in a close tourney game at Rushville. The score obscured the edge as Arlington used a possession strategy to pull away late. Parish led Carthage with strong interior play while McCorkle and Watkins scored 16 and 15 respectively but cooled in the final period. Arlington balanced scoring with Kramer Parks Sunman and Kemple contributing as the Raiders missed free throws late.
The Carthage High School 1955 56 yearbook notes two senior exits Mary Shutt and Bob McCorkle amid a junior and senior class tribute. It praises their contributions in cheerleading band athletics and school spirit with memories from basketball baseball and track.

A tornado-velocity wind hit south of Carthage last Friday night. It moved east along the Lowell Leisure Henry Jessup road damaging the Lowell Leisure house and barn, Henry Jessup cattle barn, and the Tessa Beher farm home occupied by Melvin Adams. The storm, which began about 5 AM after earlier damage in Franklin and Shelbyville, caused nearly 1 million dollars in damage.
Mrs Dora Barnard of Greenfield R R 6 died after a stroke suffered over a year ago. Her sister Mrs Russell Roland received word. Funeral services will be held at Pasch's in Greenfield Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Mr and Mrs Jack Moore and family near Pendleton spent the weekend with his parents Mr and Mrs Charles Moore. They attended the Sports Show at the Coliseum in Indianapolis with Gene Leisure and later a separate showing with Mr and Mrs Robert Moore and Mr and Mrs Raymond McDaniel.
Representative Vance N. Waggoner of Rushville announces his candidacy to seek renomination on the Republican ticket to represent Rush and Henry counties in the Indiana General Assembly. Elected in 1954, he has served as Rush County prosecuting attorney and is active in local politics and civic affairs. He is married with three children.
Eleven airmen died when a four engine B 50 bomber crashed near Dayton Ohio shortly after takeoff from Wright Patterson Field. Among the dead was Master Sgt Robert O Watkins 35 of New Castle brother of Billy Watkins of Carthage. He served 14 years in the Air Force and had just completed training at an atomic base in New Mexico. Memorial services are planned at Wright Field Friday and funeral Saturday at 2 PM in New Castle with Masonic rites.
Mrs. Hugh Roberts is reported ill with a virus infection. She is under medical care and is expected to recover.
A signed statement from Finley and Marie Smith explains a school basketball grade dispute. The report details a rule that requires an average of 70 or higher to be eligible, and a teacher allegedly deducted 50 percent for talking in class, causing conflict and a tribunal.
Indianapolis Feb 28 elite Hoosier hogs competed at the Seventh Annual Hoosier Spring Barrow Show with entrants from 43 Indiana counties totaling 733 hogs. Over 5 000 prize money to 148 exhibitors, judging across 62 classes plus carcass class on display Saturday at Kingan meat packers with Purdue University and Indiana Swine Breeders Association sponsors. Leonard Jackson of Carthage earned multiple placements in lightweight and heavyweight crossbred Yorkshires and Hampshires, while luncheon guests at Lewisville included Mrs Ralph Truitt Mrs Frank Alexander and Mrs Roy Ball.
The Rev and Mrs Gerald Fleming's son in New Castle is ill with virus pneumonia but improving. Mr and Mrs Henry L Stinger have been ill with a virus infection. Mrs Royce Joseph and son are ill but much improved. Mrs Gene Richmond is ill with a cold.
A two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs William Parsons lost an eye after falling into a bucket at their home last Sunday afternoon. The eye was removed at the hospital and she is now recovering at their East Second Street residence.
The Fletcher Methodist church schedules a rummage sale at The Citizen Office from March 15 to 17 with a market event on Saturday morning March 17.
Anna Mildred Mosier died after nine months of suffering at Rush Memorial Hospital Rushville. Born April 27 1912 in Rush County daughter of John Gurney Olive Phelps Drysdale. Survived by husband Charles daughter Sue 11 mother Olive Drysdale sister Lucille Guyatt Dublin. Funeral 2 pm Monday Fletcher Methodist Church with Dr James Furbay in charge organ by Mrs Hubert Hunt. Burial Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Rush County Chapter of the American Red Cross held two meetings on Thursday February 23. Division chairmen mapped the March fund campaign and planned a March 6 kick off marking the 75th anniversary of the Red Cross founding with recognition of five living charter members. A second group of township captains led by Clarence Spuller and Thomas Logan planned countywide work with attendees from multiple townships and officials.
Mr. and Mrs. Russell Roland and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Fenner completed a one day trip to Florida visiting St. Petersburg Puta Gorda and Belle Grande, Miami and Orlando. They traveled over 3200 miles and enjoyed a 34 mile boat ride.
