Last Beech Quartet Member Dies at 83 in Marion
Alvin Gardner, 83, the last living member of the Beech Quartet that rose to fame in the 1880s, died in Marion Ohio. The group formed in 1883 and drew diverse crowds to Mt. Pleasant church near Cartage for annual homecomings. Gardner is survived by his wife and daughter.

Ralph McClarnon Awarded Bronze Star for 1945 Germany action
Technician Fifth Grade Ralph O. McClarnon received the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in Germany on April 12, 1945 near Urbach. The award was presented June 5 near Eggenfelden by Col. Maloen. McClarnon served with the 13th Armored Division and earned battle credits with four armies and the First Army. He wears the Combat Infantry Badge Good Conduct ribbon and ETO ribbon.

Youngsters Accepted for Marine Corps Induction
The Marine Corps will recruit 17 year olds, announced by War rant Officer Anthony Morello. Recruits train at Paris Island for nine weeks then four weeks at Camp Lejeune after a 15 day furlough. A 17 year old may join regular Marine Corps for four years or Marine Corps Reserve for the war duration plus six months. Height limits 5 ft 3 in to 6 ft 4 in. grammar school education required, high school graduates preferred. Hoosier youths may report to 317 Kresge Building Indianapolis.

Railroad extra gang to depart Greensburg soon
The Greensburg railroad extra gang, adding about 100 workers to local construction, will leave this weekend after upgrading 13 miles of New York Central track from 90 to 105 pound rails.
