Mr and Mrs Omer Heim and children Mr and Mrs Dean Addison and son Tim Mr and Mrs Elmer Porter and sons and Mrs Leonard Wrightsman spent from Friday until Monday at the Heim and Wrightsman cottages on Lake Freeman.
Glen Smith and Larry Johnson left Tuesday for Air Force service. Their plane departed from Indianapolis Tuesday evening, bound for Texas for training.
Mr and Mrs William Harold Dixon attended the Indiana Bankers Association Convention held last Wednesday and Thursday at the French Lick Sheraton Hotel in French Lick.
Mrs. George McNabb and Mrs. Frank Alexander attended the district American Legion Auxiliary meeting in Fortville Tuesday. The local unit placed second in the district for the poppy window display and first for service sales quota and membership quota. Mrs. McNabb was named to the district resolution committee.
Rev. and Mrs. Gene Miller and daughter Lynn Ann relocated from Letts Indiana to Florida Indiana near Anderson. Miller becomes pastor of the Florida Methodist Church. Lynn Ann stayed with grandparents Mr and Mrs Stanley Hawkins from Friday to Monday.
Den I met dast Monday at the home of Merrill Ewing at 3 o'clock. We played baseball and had refreshments. Denner, Vernon Little.
The Haverland Brothers of Dubuque Iowa and Robert Knight of Indianapolis have purchased the machinery of the defunct Fredmar Company housed in the former Jones Canning Company buildings in Carthage. They are builders and may establish a new company if they also secure the buildings.
The United Studios will be at the Community Center Saturday from 3 to 5 PM to display proofs of Carthage youth photos. If you had pictures taken, visit to choose proofs. all taken images will be published soon after Saturday June 17.
Mrs. Robert McKain Mrs. George B. McNabb Mrs. Frank Alexander and Mrs. Wayne Draper attended an American Legion Auxiliary past presidents district dinner meeting at the Greenfield Elks Club last Thursday night.
Mrs Roy Stanley had surgery Wednesday morning at Hancock County Hospital. Ricky DeWitt son of Mr and Mrs Elmer DeWitt was taken to Henry County Hospital Monday for an appendectomy operation. Mrs Robert Walker fell at her home Monday night cutting her mouth requiring stitches. John Nelson of Carthage returned home Wednesday from Rush Memorial Hospital after treatment for second degree burns on face and arms.
Mr and Mrs Harold Taylor and their three children returned home Sunday after a two week sightseeing trip to California. They stayed with Mr and Mrs Ivan Mayfield in Glendale and visited other relatives. The children enjoyed tours of Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm.
Students of Mrs Pam Hunt present a dance revue tonight at 8 p.m. at the Community Center. The program features tap modern ballet and Hawaiian numbers.
The Better Business Association announces a Beard Growing Contest for the Fall Festival with prizes for categories such as longest and most unusual. A notable radio or TV figure will judge and winner photos will appear in the paper. Participants outside Carthage may enter and licenses to avoid growing a beard will be sold.
Lieutenant Commander E L Patton of Carthage, a Naval Reservist, serves aboard the U S S Portage PCE 902 sailing from Great Lakes for a two week intensive training cruise in northern Lake Michigan. The Portage, part of the Ninth Naval District Training Squadron, conducts gunnery maneuvers and tactical problems. Patton gains practical training for advancement to the next higher rating and will return to Carthage Saturday.
The Brotherhood-Sisterhood schedules a Monday 7 30 p m gathering at the Community Center. The pitch-in supper is postponed to a later date.
Born Tuesday at Rush Memorial Hospital a son to Mr and Mrs Elmer Kline of Carthage.
Mrs. Finley Smith hosted friends Sunday night for Glen and Larry Johnson, bound for Air Force, Bob Cooper for Army, and Tom Roberts for Navy. The 1961 graduates and 21 seniors attended with class sponsor John Rhoades and Mrs. Rhoades. Movies and slides of senior day, graduation, and activities entertained as refreshments were served.
Mesdames Hugh Weber Everett Stanley Orville Priest and Lowell Somers from Always Welcome Home EC Club attended the Home Economics Conference at Purdue University on Wednesday and Thursday.
Members and wives of the Winters Accounting Service Bowling Team gathered at the Smorgasbord in Hagerstown for a Sunday dinner to cap the bowling season. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Robert Nigh, Mr and Mrs Rex Edwards, Mr and Mrs Bob Miller, Mr and Mrs Keith Ray, Mr and Mrs Carl Carson Jr, Rev and Mrs Paul Mayfield, and Mr and Mrs Bob Winters.
Senior Band begins June 21 with weekly practice at the school Wednesdays and Thursdays 6 30 to 8 00 p m. Ribbons awarded for attendance, medals for new members and ribbons for existing members. Junior Band starts June 19 with practices Mondays and Tuesdays 5 00 to 6 00 p m. Beginning Band begins June 20 with Tuesday and Wednesday sessions 3 00 to 4 00 p m.
Real estate activity in Rush County climbed to the highest monthly total in over a year with estimated sales of 422000. Farm deals led with 315000, including two 96000 transactions on a 240 acre Orange Township farm. Rushville City transfers added about 50000 and other non farm deals about 57000.
The Junior Ripley Boosters 4H Club hosts a car wash on June 17 from 8 30 a m to 4 p m in the alley beside David Whitfield s house. Proceeds fund club members trip to a baseball game.
Carthage Lions Club will sponsor a Ripley Township entrant in the 1961 Rush County Fair Queen Contest. Eligible girls aged 16 to 21 who are unmarried may enter. winner goes to Indiana State Fair as Miss Rush County. Contact Frank Hampton Parvel Moore or Robert Winters by June 24. candidates appear June 26 at the Lions Club meeting.
The final program will be held at the church on Friday evening June 16 with crafts and Bible School work on display from 6 30 to 730 The program will start at 730 The parents of the students and the public are invited to attend Presentation of Bibles will be made to students who have excelled in special work and attendance.
The Future Friends Fellowship met at the Church Monday evening at 7 30. Vice president Connie Dal rymple called the meeting to order. Susan Skinner led singing and members agreed to a swimming party at Knightstown pool next Monday at 7 p m. Members will meet at the church. The lesson covered George Fox founder of the Quaker Church.
The Nazarene Church Bible School ended last Friday with an average daily attendance of 59. Sixty pupils and teachers enjoyed a picnic Saturday at Sunset Park in Knightstown. A program by the students followed Sunday School. Teachers listed include Mrs. Billy Hinton, Mrs. Bill Jones, Miss Joanne Whitfield, Mrs. Cledis Nolen, Miss I ta Logan, and Mrs. Norman Jones among others with Mrs. Robert West as song leader and Mrs. Albert Steward at the piano.
Dr and Mrs Arthur Walter of Sanger California observed their 50th anniversary at Carthage Friends Church in Indiana with a reception for about 100 relatives and friends. The couple, married June 14 1911, were feted in gold and white decor with cards photos and an all-day gathering.
The Rush County Soil Conservation District Board held a meeting on June 7. It approved two land judging contests set for September 23 and September 30 in Rush County and New Castle District respectively. A State Inspection Team praised the district’s drainage projects and new cooperators were added: Albert Brune 80 acres Orange township Harold Wilkison 84 acres Richland Henry Jessup 250 acres Posey Ripley townships. The board will solicit more information on the watershed program before firm plans.
Rushville hosts the 1962 district meeting as new officers take office from June 1, 1961. Walter Martin is named president and Wayne Lee secretary treasurer, with Lester Gene Miller outgoing president presiding. Attendees include Wayne Lee Arlington Fred Flick Charles Whitfield Carthage Orville Applegeet Falmouth Arthur Jessup Robert Persons Denton Tressler Byron Oldham and others.
Fifteen students who took part in the boys school street patrol went to Victory Field last Friday to watch two games between the Indianapolis Indians and the Denver team. Local men accompanied and sponsored them at the event.
The Ripley Needletwisters met Tuesday June 13 at 2 00 p m in the Home Ec Room. Sherry McKain led group singing while Anita Leisure led the pledge to the American flag and Karen Siler led the 4H pledge. Reta Stanley gave a health and safety report. 30 members and 4 guests answered roll call. Demonstrations featured McKain Bar-B-Que Burgers Perry Peanut Butter Cookies Skinner Honolulu Hot Dogs Siler Five Ways Salad Stanley Strawberry Shortcake Redmaker Pineapple Upside Down Cake Zimmerman Whitfield Mexican Wedding Cakes Fannin Henley Milk Fluff. The meeting adjourned after business.
The T H Miner family reunion took place Sunday at Sunset Park Knightstown with a pitch in dinner at noon. Attendees included Gola and Russell Davis New Castle Aldrich Harvey Mooresville and others. Russell Davis led a short business meeting and Florence Maxwell elected president with Aldrich Harvey as treasurer for the coming year. The next reunion is planned for the second Sunday in June at the Knightstown Shelter House.
A June 13 1961 meeting at the Carthage Community Center informed Ripley Township residents about radioactive fallout risks and protection measures. Captain David Grocox of Rush County Civil Defense led the program sponsored by the Carthage Lions Club. the Rural Civil Defense Committee members were Hubert Hunt Robert White Cecil Pike and Jerry Montgomery.

The Carthage Lions Club held a dinner meeting at the Community Center with guests Rob ert Norris Virgil Parks and Charles Whitfield. New officers for 1961 1962 were Leonard Jackson president Tom Shilds 1st vice Tom Bush 2nd vice Lloyd Manuel lion tamer Donald Ruby tail twister Parvel Moore directors Guy Ewing Ross Tweedy treasurer Harold Dixon and secretary John Rhoades. Thomas Bush showed two films from Container Corporation of America on manufacturing processes and client services.
Acting president Ricky Patton led a 4H meeting on Monday June 12 in the schoolng room. Warren Nigh gave the pledge with Gary Back leading the 4H pledge, Darlene Barry directed group singing, and a health and safety report was presented by David Whitfield. The car wash site moved to the alley beside David Whitfield’s house for Saturday June 17. Larry Nigh spoke on grain preparation for showing and refreshments followed at 9:30 p.m.
One hundred fifty two lambs were consigned in the first Rush County Lamb Pool for 1961. John R. White, chairman of the Sheep committee, reports 82.1 percent graded in top two grades and nearly 50 percent in double blue. Largest consignor was Phil White with 29 head. Other large consignors included John Looney, Everett Shank, John R. White, Richard Bonne and Clarence Dyer. Lambs graded by Paul Graue and shipped to Cincinnati for sale, with next pool set for Wednesday afternoon, July 5.
Mrs Kenneth Land served as organist at the wedding of Miss Karen Plank and Dwayne Roland at Knightstown Christian Church. Guests included families from Vevay Middletown Indianapolis and Rushville. Local graduates Gary Clayton and other attendees are noted along with several social visits and festival attendance.
