Rush County Shorthorn Picnic and 4-H Activities Highlighted
The Rush County Short horn Cattle Breeders Association held its annual picnic at the Hoeing home in Rushville township with about fifty attendees. A pitch-in meal preceded a business session led by President Thomas McManus. The group voted to award a $100 heifer prize to the outstanding 4-H beef calf club member, planned to publish member names in the Rush County Fair catalog, and to award rosette ribbons to top 4-H Shorthorn heifers and steers. They invited neighboring breeders to join the B and C Gold medal calf club show on August 2 at the Rush County Fair. Committees were named for visitation, nominations, banquet planning, and county officer selection. Hollis Hanson of Fayette County was selected as judge for the beef department at the 1958 Rush County Fair. Officers include Thomas McManus president and Harold Gilson vice president. The American Institute of Cooperation meeting was discussed, with sessions in Fort Collins August 17–23 to train youth and adults in cooperative methods. Million blanks will be available after June 10 for eligible youths age 16 or older in 1957. Last year Madeleine Bonne and George Truster earned expense-paid trips to Durham, North Carolina, sponsored by the Rush County Farm Bureau. Stanford Keith Miller of Delaware County will assist with the 4-H program this summer, employed by Purdue University, and recently graduated from Parker University with a BS in Agriculture.
