Mrs. Robert Jackson sustained a painful injury to her right hand when a power lawn mower fell and nipped three fingers while she lowered it at home. The middle finger required three stitches.
The Cool Red Auto Club hosts a bicycle race for boys and girls up to age 16 with cash prizes. All entrants must meet in front of Carthage Lumber Yard by 6 p.m. on Thursday June 20.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Webb of Anderson are the parents of a daughter named Jane Ellen born at Rush Memorial Hospital at 5 a m on Wednesday weighing 5 pounds 14 ounces. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Oma Webb Carthage and Mr. and Mrs. George Daggy of near New Castle.
Miss Mary Lou Alexander entered Indiana University this Thursday for the eight week summer term.
A letter from Sgt. and Mrs. Omer Stephens reports they are now stationed near Ft. Benning in Columbus Georgia. They recall a Texas fishing trip washed out by high water but enjoyed their visit and invite friends to write to them at Route 2 Box 352 Buena Vista Road Columbus Georgia.
Rushville leader Mr. Richard Pell president of the Rush County Cancer Control Fund Drive commended Ripley Township and Carthage for meeting and exceeding their quotas. Ripley ranked second to Center Township. Pell urged further donations. Carthage Legion Auxiliary led the drive with Mrs. Frank Alexander as chair and auxiliary members assisting.
The Camera Club meets Wednesday night June 19 at 6 30 at the Community Center for a pitch in supper. Rev Frank Guyatt presents pictures and a special entertainment program. The public is invited to the auditorium event.
Mrs Elmer Parshall and her daughter Virginia Lou were injured Sunday in a two car collision on State Road 40 west of Cambridge City while en route to Carthage to visit Mrs Parshall's father Fred McManus. Mrs Parshall suffered three broken bones at the top of her right foot and Virginia Lou had facial cuts needing stitches. The car damage was estimated at 400 dollars.
Sgt and Mrs Curtis Lewman and Carol Ann of Neosho Mo arrived in Carthage for sixteen months residence. Sgt Lewman will be sent to the Far East for duty within thirty days. Mrs Lewman is a daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer Sandefur.
No church at Fletcher Methodist Church next Sunday due to Conference Sunday. Sunday School will be held as usual.
Marlene Miller of Carthage files for divorce from her husband. They married May 28, 1955 and separated May 28, 1957. She requests restoration of her maiden name Graff.
Community notices celebrate Mrs. Sue Ann Land and Mrs. Katherine Truitt visiting friends in New Richmond Indiana and Mrs Land as organist at a church wedding for Miss Josephine Meharry. Gatherings include parties hosted by Miss Karen Graff and Mrs Nelle Beher with guests from Carthage and surrounding towns.
Mrs Ella Nelson was admitted to Henry County Hospital today, Thursday, for medical care. She is reported in stable condition with the uncertainty of further tests pending.
Postmaster Joe Porter is off duty at the local Post Office due to rheumatism and a severe back setback following penicillin injections.
Caleb Marsh and children Larry and Judy are vacationing this week at Lake Shafer. Mrs. Marsh and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ray plan to join them this weekend.
Edgar Heathcock aged 66 died Sunday at his home in Carapolis Pennsylvania. Surviving relatives include his widow two sisters Mrs Ethel Bundrant Rushville and Mrs Walter Richmond Cleveland Ohio and a brother Albert Heathcock Washington DC.
Mrs Joel Ridlen arrived at Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis Indiana on Wednesday for observation in the medical ward.
Cleveland educator Roy D Bundy, a Carthage native and longtime Cleveland schools administrator, retires this year. A 750-attendee dinner honoring 59 retiring teachers was hosted by the Kiwanis Club of West Cleveland and the Chamber of Commerce education committee. Bundy recently attended Carthage High School alumni events and supported local school affairs, following his grandfather William Bundy. He awarded the trumpet prize at 1957 Class Day, won this year by Jim Ellis.
The Rush County 4 H Club Conservation Tour on Saturday June 8 drew 42 participants including 4 H members adult leaders and parents. Stops included Ronnie Gatewood farm with grass waterways and contour plowing Billy Watkins farm with farm pond benefits and a Soil Conservation Service talk by Bill Martin and Robert Spuller. A third stop at Newby Woods near Carthage featured A N Liming District Extension Forester and Aaron Nigh discussing forestry wildlife conservation with tree identification demonstrations and Pitman Robertson Service overview.
Rush County farmers and 4H Club members may sign up for the 5 Acre Corn Club until Saturday June 15. Extension officials say the Indiana Crop Improvement Association has granted a time extension from June 1 to June 15 to accommodate late corn planters. Enrollments are accepted at the County Extension Office.
Keith Gardner of Center township won three firsts at the 4 H and FFA Lamb Show on June 5, topping the single lamb class and pen of five lambs. His brother Lynn earned reserve champion, with Phillip Dalrymple placing third in the single lamb class. Paul Graue served as official lamb grader.
Weekend guests included Ray and Dee Fox with the Roland family in Indianapolis and Noblesville visitors Dee Ann Earnest and Brent Allen. Multiple gatherings occurred with Collins, Hartzler Sebesky households, and extended visits to Rushville St Louis Noblesville Madison and Clifty Falls State Park.
Miss Sally Aker daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Aker of Carthage married Carl Grizzell son of Mr and Mrs Everett Grizzell of Laurel R R 2 in a June 1 double ring ceremony read by Rev Rex B Krieg Wesleyan Methodist Church Attendants were Mr and Mrs Frank Litell of Carthage The bride wore a pink nylon dress with white trim A reception followed at the bride’s parents home The couple will reside at 217 West Third Street Rushville
Dick Moore son of Mr and Mrs Robert Moore won the Cool Rod trophy for most points in the summer driving tests at a Carthage Cool Rods meeting. Bill Aker finished second closely, with final tallies showing Moore 1570 and Aker 1535 among top contenders.
The T. H. Miner family gathered at Sunset Park in Knightstown for the first reunion in 15 years with a pitch in dinner on Sunday June 9. Relatives came from NL Indianapolis New Castle Mooreville Rushville Knightstown and Carthage. Of thirteen children three were present John Miner Elmina Parish of Carthage and G D Bowman of New Castle.
The Fletcher Methodist Church will start Bible School on Monday June 17 for one week. Ages 5 to 12 or up to the 8th grade may attend and everyone is invited to participate.
Mrs. Bertha Beck past 10th District American Legion Auxiliary President and Mrs. Norma McKain past District Secretary will be delegates to the National American Legion Auxiliary Convention in Atlantic City New Jersey in September. McKain was voted a delegate at the 10th District meeting Tuesday at Greensburg Legion Home. Beck, a past district president, will be sent as past president. Both attended the all day meeting Tuesday where new officers were elected.
Second Lt. James R. McClarnon, 22, son of Mrs Har riett B McClarnon of Greenfield Indiana, recently graduated from a 12 week military orientation course under the Reserved Forces Act at the Army Medical Service School Fort Sam Houston Texas. A 1956 Indiana University graduate he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta.
Rev. Robert A. Shockney and Rev. Louis Barrett will be absent from the pulpit from June 17 to 29 by request of the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends Pastoral and Evangelistic committee. They will enter The School of the Ministry at the Yokefellow house, Earlham College, Richmond Indiana, and return June 30.
Carthage Chapter No 574 O E S held a regular meeting June 12 at the Masonic Hall. Officers Edna N Kennedy Roy Stanley opened in the East. Past Matrons and Patrons were honored. A short skit and Arminta Ruby song followed. Piano solos by Lynn Judy Kennedy and Sheryl Mosier accompanied the closing program. Refreshments were served.

Arlington resident Charles DeMunbrun won the county superintendent of schools office on the third ballot in a vote by the Rush County township trustees held Monday afternoon. He faced Paul Linton, Manilla Schools principal and former Carthage principal, and J W Brown, Raleigh School principal. Durbin works at Container Corp. A 1987 Pontiac driven by Dwight Sims left three fences on the Gates farm near Carthage after failing the 5 curve.
Verne Plummer of Carthage has been appointed deputy sheriff by Sheriff Lon Coons after bonding and receiving full authority. Arthur W. Goodman aged about two, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Goodman, died after a brief illness following flu, survived by parents. William Gatewood of Henderson rents the Harlan Henley building on E. Henley St. to open July 1. Esther Margaret Kennedy and Walter O. Nelson, both of Carthage, wed at Rushville with Rev. H W Hargett officiating. Lucille Reeves of Knightstown and Earl Richey of Cumberland wed in 1925. Mildred Drysdale and Betty Henley depart for Girl Reserves camp at Camp Gray, Saugatuck, Michigan.
