Mrs. Joyce Rhoades and her son Larry and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Carson Sr. departed last Friday for a two week journey to Los Angeles to visit Mrs. Carson's sister Mrs. Everett Hawkins and Mr. Hawkins. They also plan to visit Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Martan and family in California.
George B. McNabb Jr of Fairbanks Alaska visits his parents Dr and Mrs George B McNabb and his brother Dr Richard McNabb and family.
Miss Pam Hunt of Carthage appeared on the state Share-the-Fun program Tuesday during the annual 4-H Club Round-Up at Purdue University. She was selected as one of two acts to represent the New Castle District and presented a specialty dance with Alta Carr of Knights Town as accompanist.
Seven directors and two officers attended the Carthage Community Center Board meeting Tuesday evening. Fred Parish, president, presided and delivered the secretary's report. Bills were allowed and paid. A chairman for the Fall Festival was among the matters discussed.
Mrs. Gertrude Jessup was moved from Rush Memorial Hospital to Community Hospital in Indianapolis last Friday, settling in room 3370. Tommie Blessinger, son of Mr and Mrs Freeman Blessinger, underwent a tonsillectomy this Thursday at the New Castle Clinic.
East St Christian Church announces Bible School begins Monday June 8 and runs for two weeks from 9 to 11 am each day.
Ed Carroll and his son Jimmie accompanied by Tom Pearson and Steve Marshall attended the Indianapolis Indians defeat at Victory Field last Thursday evening.
Visiting in Arizona Mr and Mrs George Moore left Carthage last week to spend several weeks with daughter Mrs Robert Cushing and Mr Cushing in Tempe Arizona.
Carthage entrants for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Memorial Day 500 include Fred Parish Mr and Mrs Robert McKain James Ellis and sons Jim and Steve Al Stapp and Phil and Tom Manuel.
Mike Butler son of Mr and Mrs Claude Butler formerly of Carthage joined nine Raleigh School eighth graders on a trip to Detroit and Canada. Principal Gene Henizer led the group their train ride from Cincinnati to Detroit included tours of the Ford Motor Plant and Greenfield Village. In Detroit the students stayed at the Sheraton Hotel where Mike met the visiting King of Belgium.
The Adult Skating Club and guests including children will enjoy skating this Sunday night at Maxwell Rink rented by Carthage Club for the evening.
Judy Harrold and Ronnie Myers of Ripley Two were among thirty-two Rush County 4H Club members who attended the 4-H Round-Up at Purdue University from Tuesday to Thursday. A club member earned the trip based on accumulated achievement points in club work.
Dr and Mrs George B McNabb of Carthage attended a noon dinner and social gathering at the home of Mrs Cox in Bedford honoring the 1909 graduating class. Thirteen of the fifty year ago graduates were present from the twenty six living. The afternoon was spent reminiscing.
Mrs Jennie Terhune 85 widow of James B Terhune died at 6 45 am Wednesday at her home northwest of Carthage after a year and a half illness. She was born May 22 1874 in Jennings County and taught school there. Surviving are her husband three daughters one son eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral set for 2 pm Friday at Hampton Mortuary with Rev Chester Davis of the Methodist church officiating. Burial in Glen Cove Cemetery Knightsown.
Mr and Mrs Forrest Stewart and daughter Carol together with Mr and Mrs Joe Davis and son Joey from Carthage spent a two week vacation driving to Tennessee for fishing and visiting relatives in Kentucky. They returned home last Friday.
Mr and Mrs George Roland and daughter Danette Dawn visited Mr and Mrs Mathew Harris and their sons in Clarksville Tennessee. They were away from Thursday through Sunday.
Carthage opened Rushville league play with a 3-1 victory over Lanning's of Rushville. Norm Morris allowed three hits while Kinch Lanning worked for Lanning's. Key hits included doubles by O Holland and J. Smith. Carthage scored all runs in the fourth inning and Morris shut Lanning's out in the seventh.

She wonders if secret forces can mend flaws, recalls Abraham Lincoln and George Washington Carver, and fears being judged for truth telling as she contemplates a crowning moment of insight.
The 12th District of the Order of Eastern Star met May 27 in Falmouth Indiana with President Lottie Root presiding. Rachel King of Carthage was elected president with Doris Moore, Ed Harris and Milred Cramer among officers, and Rachel was installed amid carthage chapter members and a solo by Arminta Ruby.
Rush County residents among 4157 graduates in the 1959 class. Commencement at Memorial Stadium 10 a.m. CDT Monday June 8, with Field House option in rain. Baccalaureate with Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Sunday June 7 at 8:30 p.m. in the Field House.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Roberts and daughter Beth and Mr and Mrs Gene Richmond and daughter Lisa attended the commencement at Greenfield gymnasium last Thursday. Robert Eugene Lacey was among the graduates and after the ceremony thirty family members joined the Lacey couple at their home for supper and social evening.
Miss Janet Hunt and Miss Pat Todd, Carthage natives, both graduate Ball State Teachers College in Muncie on June 7 and will teach elementary in Rushville and Carthage respectively. Kirby Overman returns from Florida Southern for Bob Cousy Camp counselor role at Pittsfield New Hampshire this summer before attending Ball State next year.
Two Rush County youths were named state winners in 4H Achievement Record Book contests at the Purdue University Round-Up. Fred Robbins of Ripley Township won in Entomology and earns a Chicago trip. Robert White, also of Ripley, won Alumni and earns a state plaque.
The girls 4-H club met May 26 at 2 pm in the Carthage School Home Ec room. President Judy Harrold led the meeting with pledges by Linda Apple and Linda Wells, and Lois Ruth Shields introduced as new 4-H leader. Thirty-six members attended. minutes approved. Health and safety report by Sue Mosier. Demonstrations by Sue Siler on Home Improvement and Kathy Heim and Susan Skinner on potato salad. Recreation and refreshments hosted by Bonita Gatewood and Arlene Ruby with Sally Bush, Billie Henley, and Linda Harrold as hostesses.
Visiting from Florida are Linda Pitts daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse Pitts with Mrs Jack Wessel Mr Wessel and Debra and Mark of Fort Lauderdale. They joined the Bill Pitts family and children for Decoration Day at Mr and Mrs Lawrence Crouch home in Oaklandon Indiana.
Manilla won 12 to 2 over Carthage in a Tuesday league practice game. John Houston and Jerry Pounds hit home runs for Manilla, while Foust led Carthage with three hits. Carthage pitchers issued six walks and 11 strikeouts. Manilla hurlers fanned nine.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert E. White of Arcadia California will visit his brother and sister in law Mr. and Mrs. Franklin White and attend Earlham College commencement. It will mark the 50th anniversary of his college class and notes his past as a well known Earlham athlete.
Bertha Beck hosted the Twice Four Bridge Club on Wednesday night. Mae Moore won high, Flossie McCorkle was second, and Mary Taylor was low. guests included Josephine Stevens Leonie Mosier Mary B. McClurg and Esther Leisure.
Saturday guests included Dorothy Miller and Mr and Mrs Richard Miller with children from Knightstown. Sunday visits from Mr and Mrs Emerson Wilcoxen Jr and family of Greenfield. Mr and Mrs Edward Fenner were supper guests.
Odell Pitts builds a cement block skating rink on one acre north of Carthage Knights Town Pike, near Twin Silo farm. The 50 by 105 feet ice area will feature a 50 by 130 foot building with 10 foot walls and 17 foot ceiling. Open around October 1 with public skating Tue Thu Sat Sun and Sunday matinee. Private parties possible Mon Wed Fri.
The Better Business Association of Carthage met at the Community Center and planned a Sidewalk Sale and Record Hop for Saturday June 20. President pro tem Clyde E. Ruby led the meeting as Parvel Moore reported May minutes and the treasurer noted a 132.56 balance.
Two Decatur Rush counties high school all star games set for June 12 at St Paul and June 24 at Milroy gym. Two graduates from each 1958-59 county team named to participate in the benefit events staged by St Paul and Milroy Kiwanis clubs to aid underprivileged children. Athletes listed include Arling ton Bob Baker Pat Wolf Carthage Dudley Leisure Ronnie Gatewood New Salem Tom Naylor Tom English Mays Tyrone Netherly Phil Reece Manilla Jan Ernstes Don Harper Milroy Jerry Matthews Don Runyon.
Jeanie Stapp led the Chi Rho meeting on June 1 1959 with a pledge to the Christian Flag. Attendees debated Bible School activities and rewarding attending children. Refreshments were provided by Alvin Holmes Arlene Ruby Judy Leisure and Charles Henderson. Brenda Ross led a prayer as a friendship circle formed and a committee for new officers was chosen.
