Mr and Mrs John Rhoades of Carthage announce the birth of a daughter Lorinda Lee weighing 6 lb 4 oz born July 21 1961 at Rush Memorial Hospital. Also noted a marriage license issued for Walter G McMahan 20 and Crystal Kay Addison 18, both of Carthage.
East Street Christian Church Sunday School class and families shared a picnic at Baker Park in New Castle. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Robert McKain and children, Mrs. Mary Joseph and son, Chuck Henley, Clyde Ruby and daughters, Richard Harold and family, Clarence Dulake and son, Lloyd Manuel and sons, James Ellis and Carol Ann, Steve, Rev. and Mrs. Robert Kendall and family, and Barbara Floyd.
Word arrives of the death of Henry Carr 54 of St. Louis Missouri brother of A J Carr Knightstown previously Carthage He died Thursday July 27 at 3 30 am in St. Louis Immediate survivors include his widow two children three sisters and his brother A J Carr Funeral details were unavailable at press time.
Charles Mosier and daughter Miss Sue Mosier joined Judy Kennedy and Lynn Kennedy at the Indianapolis Indians versus Omaha game Sunday in Indianapolis.
The Boy Scouts met Friday at 7 p.m. in Carthage Library for a brief business session. Mr. Whitfield distributed 2nd year and 1st year patches and the gathering closed with a prayer. Scribe Jim Wells.

Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier and Mr and Mrs Mike Watkins with son Miky spent the weekend in Cincinnati with Mr and Mrs James W Mosier and daughter and Mr and Mrs Forrest Beck. Beck hosted a Sunday dinner for the Mosier and Watkins parties and Connie Leisure of Carthage, a weeklong house guest, also joined. Connie Leisure returned to Carthage Sunday after visiting Cincinnati.
School friends Mrs R M Allen of Richmond Mrs Lillian Coleman of Knights Town Mrs Fred White Mrs Jesse Kizer and Mrs Lillian Moore enjoyed dinner Tuesday at the Geise Restaurant. The afternoon was spent socially at the home of Mrs Moore.
The Woman's Republican of Rush County will meet Monday evening July 31 at 8 PM. Attendees will tour the county auditor's and treasurer's offices during the session.
Mrs. Lewis Henderson fell at home last Thursday and needed seven stitches above her eye. Russell Reddick remains very poorly and convalesces at home. William Howard entered the Veterans Hospital on Tenth St Indianapolis for a few days. Mrs. Howard stays about the same at home. Mrs. Robert Jackson had major surgery Friday at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Omer Stephens of Romulus New York slowly recovers at Taylor Brown Hospital Waterloo New York from a heart attack suffered June 10 1961. She is daughter in law of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Stephens of Carthage. Mrs. John Stoner of Carthage was admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital this week.

Indiana State Auditor Dorothy Gardner released payroll charts for the State Highway Commission showing 1960 and 1961 two week salaries rising from 2267 workers totaling 462 405.75 to 2386 workers totaling 508 609.75, with hourly wages for non-salaried workers increasing from 3 926 459.20 in early 1960 to 4 773 253.80 in early 1961. Gardner charged Governor Welsh with overspending and misleading the public about state finances, noting budget balance and ample revenues while he pushes for higher taxes and cutbacks. She warned payroll growth harms highway construction and public mileage.
Ruth A. Pennington daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse Pennington Rushville Indiana was assigned to the U S Army Garrison at Fort Leavenworth Kansas July 14. The hospital aide in the WAC Detachment entered the Women's Army Corps last February after basic at Fort McClellan Alabama and is a 1959 graduate of Mays High School.
Six outstanding Rush County 4H girls received National Bank Achievement trophies at the annual 4H Dress Revue. Winners include Diane Stanley crafts Nancy Norris clothing Harriett Kuhn foods Judy Alexander home furnishings Carol Bradfield food preservation canning Amy Sue Addison freezing.
Edith Louise Ealy 53 native of Carthage died at her Knightstown home last Thursday. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Butcher Funeral Home with burial in Glen Cove Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Beatrice Jones of Knightstown, brothers Everett and Thomas Ealy of Indianapolis, and sisters Adele Heathcock, Gladys Boatright of Knightstown Eva Ross of New Castle and Francis Thompson of Indianapolis.

The Misses Sherry McKain Arlene Ruby Jeannie Stapp Sally Bush and Karen Siler of the Chi Rho organization returned home Saturday from a week's stay at the Bedford Christian Church Camp. Mr and Mrs Robert McKain were overnight guests Friday and accompanied the girls home. Rev Robert Kendall of the Carthage Christian Church was a director and Mrs Forrest Marshall a counselor at the camp.
Glenwood (5 3) handed Carthage its third loss in ten starts at Arlington by scoring four runs in the first three frames. Campbell and Cullins doubled for Glenwood, Mel McCorkle had two hits for Carthage, and pitcher Russell struck out ten. Final score 7 8 1 for Glenwood to 3 8 1 for Carthage.
Kit Porter pitched a rare no-hitter for the 7th and 8th grade team on Wednesday. He faced only two baserunners, walking one and hitting another. His team collected 11 hits and won 12-0, with Craig Lafuse adding a double and Porter contributing a double and a triple.
Carthage won 2-1 over Arlington in a 45-6 grade baseball matchup played Wednesday at Arlington. Carthage had 3 hits while Arlington collected 4. Batteries were Lafuse and Porter for Carthage with Cooley and Logan for Arlington. Carthage hitters Pearson Finch and Car rolled supplied the offense.
Milroy wins 5-4 on a three inning stretch picking up four runs in the third inning on walks errors and hits. E Jackson homered twice for Carthage with two hits total while Milroy’s Knecht Jordan Woods Hornsby and Morgan delivered several extra base hits. Mike Heim pitched for Carthage surrendering six hits and four strikeouts while Woods fanned eight for Milroy.
Rain shortened play to one game. The Sluggers beat the Yank ees 11 7 in extra innings after tying 7 7 in regulation. McClurg pitched 3 hits 8 walks and 7 strikeouts for the Sluggers while Rucker and Nigh allowed 8 hits 8 walks and 6 strikeouts for the Yankees.
Richard Allen Bever age 12 of Wilkinson is fatally struck on Indiana 109 near Warrington by Ralph H. McClurg 45 Carthage. Hancock County records his sixth traffic death as he walks with four companions. Bever, a Wilkinson Middle School seventh grader, dies from a fractured skull. Surviving family includes parents two sisters and three brothers plus grandparents and other relatives.
Howard Baker, 51, escaped injury when his westbound car left the road after an eastbound vehicle crossed the center line four miles west of Rushville on U S 52 at 7 30 Monday. Baker’s car overturned in a corn field and a fence on John Green farm was damaged about $50, deputy sheriff said.
Geneva Gant, the Laurel postmaster, said a new post office will be built under a commercial lease program. The postal department provides specifications and the building is then constructed by a private enterprise and leased.
Craig Lafuse won Division II tap dance while Barbara Mann took Division I vocal solo. Barbara Mann and Janet Gray shared first in the vocal number I Double Dare You. Mary Alice Smith of Decatur County won Division IV piano solo. Holly Moon spoke after dinner. First-place winners advance to the September 5 1961 State Farm Bureau Contest.
Parishioners of St Rose of Lima Church Knightstown Indiana plan an annual summer festival on the church grounds Sunday August 6. Activities include games rides and festival fun for all ages with chicken and beef dinners served from noon to 6:00 p.m. Prize winners will receive a York air conditioner and a Zenith Royal 8 transistor radio.
A son was born Wednesday at Rush Memorial to Mr and Mrs Roy Sweet of R R 1 Arlington. The Friendly Circle carry in supper is planned for Tuesday night August 1 at the church at 6 30 p m for families and guests.
Re union Sunday plans for the Murphy Heathco family with gathering set for Sunday July 30 at the home of Mrs Pearl Davis in Raysville.
A 1961 Indiana bill requires six months with a beginner's permit before applying for an operator's license. Effective July 7 1961, applicants must be 16 to hold a beginner's permit and 16 years six months to apply for an operator's license. Driver education permits may be issued after age 15 and allow license application after completing the course at 16 years one month. Beginner permits from July 7 become valid for one year. Prior permits follow old law. Vehicle plates drop to half rate starting August 1, with tractors exempt from the new rate.
Rush County fair officials tout a busy week with Gold Medal Calf Club Open Beef Sheep Dairy and 4H departments. The Queen Contest July 27 at Rushville Memorial Gym will crown a queen to reign during fair week. Events include Auto Thrill Circus Aeromobile demonstrations hog shows tractor pulls wrestling and Gold Medal calf shows across nine counties with 200 head expected.
Mrs. William Schmidt and three sons from Indianapolis spent Wednesday with her parents Mr and Mrs Joe Graff and daughter Karen in a family gathering.
