Mr and Mrs Marshall Monk of Jacksonville Florida are the parents of a five and half pound son born Thursday July 26. Grandson of Mr and Mrs Delmer Sipes.
Melinda Gatewood infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Gatewood left Rush Memorial Hospital Saturday after several weeks in an incubator. The Gatewoods and the infant’s grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Lukens are at their home. Around ninety area residents attended Singspiration at Westland Friends Church featuring Janet Hunt, Mrs. Charles Holliday, a solo by Rev. Edwin Barker, and Rev. Lois Simmerman delivering the message.
Mr Clyde Wells and Mrs Clyde Wells announce the birth of a daughter on July 24 at Rush Memorial Hospital. The family welcomes the new arrival and celebrates the joyful event.
Twenty nine members attended the Ripley Needletwisters 4H Club gathering July 20 in the Carthage School Home Ec Room. Judy Fannin led the 4H Flag pledge and Jenny led the American Flag pledge. Demonstrations covered a flower and a cake. talks on food were given by Connie Leisure, Kim Tweedy, Vickie Gatewood, Jenny Eoff, Carolyn Sandefur, Becky Wells, and Debbie Magee. The meeting noted the Rush County fair project deadline is July 25 at 10 a.m.
Mrs Paul Clevidence entered the clinic in New Castle on Friday and underwent major surgery on Saturday. Her room number is 203.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Wilson and their two sons Bruce and Michael of Carthage returned by train from a California trip. They stayed with friends in Temple City and Arcadia including cookouts and swimming. They visited Disneyland Marineland Knotts Berry Farm and regions around the San Gabriel Mountains San Pedro Beverly Hills and Hollywood.
Jon Smith, son of Mr and Mrs Finley Smith, departed Monday evening for Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio Texas to begin Air Force training. His family and Miss Jenny Boff accompanied him to Weir Cook Airport Indianapolis for departure.
Mr and Mrs Harold Dixon of Carthage joined about 400 guests Saturday at a reception and dinner hosted by the American Fletcher National Bank in Indianapolis at the Highland Country Club. Guests then attended the Starlight Musicals at Butler Bowl and saw Bye Bye Birdie featuring Johnny Desmond.
Ronnie Gatewood comes home Saturday from six weeks of officers training in Virginia and resumes work in Lafayette as a Purdue senior this fall. Mrs Gatewood and two daughters will join him soon. A dinner meeting for Carthage Better Business Association and their wives is set for Tuesday July 31 at the Durbin Hotel at 7 30 p m.

A suit to enjoin the Hancock County School Reorganization Committee from further action was filed in Circuit Court. Donald C. Bowen and George Glass represent Hancock Central School Board and seven taxpayers to block the county plan and seek injunctive and declaratory relief, alleging 18 violations of the 1959 act, improper board selection, and noncompliance with statutory limits and residency rules. The filing also targets the State School Reorganization Commission to overturn its approval and preserve a one or two unit configuration.
A strong three car Pontiac team led by Rodger Ward A J Foyt and Paul Goldsmith tops early entries for the USAC 100 mile stock car race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Wednesday September 5. Goldsmith the 1961 USAC champion joins Ward and Foyt former 500 winners as Bill Shoulders Whitey Gerken and Eddie Meyer also enter. The 30 fastest qualify for the under lights final and ticket prices range 1 50 to 3 50 plus gate tax. The Hoosier Hundred for USAC championship cars is set for Saturday September 15 at the same venue.
John Nelson of Posey Township was elected president of the Rush County committee at a Rushville Junior High School meeting last week. Arthur Winfield of Carthage attended, and the panel discussed releasing land to an adjoining county, with objections to any Children's Home land. The issue involves state law and was referred to the State School Reorganization Commission for guidance.
About one hundred members and guests attended a reception and shower for Rev. Jack Wallace and family at the Carthage Fletcher Methodist Church last Thursday. The program featured group singing and duets, a Tri-Tones number, and a surprise mock court trial with Wallace as the defendant. Refreshments were served by the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
The Carthage Band Boosters thank donors including Mr and Mrs Lee Patton and Kappa Kappa Sigma for contributions totaling 604.36 so far. They report a goal of 3600.00 and still need 395.64 to reach the summer target.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Heim returned Friday from a week long trip that included a stay with Mr and Mrs James Pope and family in Xenia Illinois and a visit to Leech Lake Minnesota with Mr and Mrs Eugene Leisure of Carthage. En route home they toured sites in Michigan.
Mrs Arthur Jean and her daughter Mary Alice of Lawrenceburg formerly of Carthage were Monday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Logan Nelgon.
The Dress Revue at Jackson Two features 4H Clothing Achievement by Harriet Kuhn and 4H Crafts by Ruth Boyer with former members as narrator. John Sam Anderson played piano, Debbie Roberts and Mike Miller performed, and several Extension Staff and 4H Club Council members attended. Ushers included Larry Angle and Jim Geise.
Rush County Extension Office reminds exhibitors entries for the county fair are due by Wednesday noon July 25. Open Class entries for the state fair are due August 1 and 4H entries August 8. Open Class exhibitors may obtain catalogs at the Extension Office. The Southeastern Indiana 4H Barrow Show and Sale committee directors will meet in the Extension Office.
At Taylor University Upland Indiana a weeklong junior basketball camp concluded with three Pro League teams tying for first. Tom Pearson of Cherokee, Mike Joseph of Braves, and an Irquois team member earned blue ribbons. Tom also won all star on his team. 140 boys attended from Indiana Illinois Ohio Michigan with five weeks left.
Carthage H and Future Farmers of America members attended the Indiana Junior Hereford Association Field Day at Lo cust Lawn Farm in Bentonville on July 20. Events included judging classes, feed mixing demos, a public speaking contest, and a pit barbecue lunch. The livestock team of Campbell, LaFuse, Lafuse, and Stephens finished fifth among thirty-one teams, earning a trophy from White Oak Farm.
Carthage fell behind after four runs in the fifth inning and could not complete a comeback against New Salem. Pitcher C Lafuse allowed six hits as errors by Carthage contributed to the loss.
Fairland posted its third straight shutout defeating Carthage 2-0 in Arlington last Thursday. Olinger hit a four-base hit and Mullins an RBI triple in the third inning while Mullins and Olinger led Fairland with four and four hits respectively. Stewart pitched well for Carthage allowing seven hits as Edwards contributed Carthage’s best extra-base hit.
Carthage blanked Perfect Circle 10 0 and defeated Arlington 5 4 in Friday league play. Cecil Tague pitched a six inning no hitter with five strikeouts. Tague Magee Mc Corkle and Tague doubled for the winners.
Milroy scored four in the fourth and defeated Carthage 5-0. Milroy turned back Carthage with two clutch double plays. R Weidner pitched well for Carthage and Hood starred for Milroy with two key plays and a strong game at the plate. Weidner had two singles for Carthage.
Mofield pitched a two hitter to beat Arlington 7 6 in five innings. He also led Carthage at the plate with three hits including a triple and two singles as his team racked seven hits off Beckner.
Miss Donna McCorkle and Mrs. Howard McCorkle visited Mrs. Vera Warrick in Rushville on Saturday sharing social time and cheer.
Martha Fitch born August 6 1885 in Ohio daughter of Louis and Mary Rayburn Stamper died previously. She married Joseph W Fitch who died in 1927. Survived by two daughters Mrs Ralph Erickson Lexington Kentucky and Mrs RF Mac. Member of Mother Church First Church of Christ Scientist Boston Massachusetts.
Arlington edged Carthage 5 to 4 on Friday night after scoring three in the seventh. Arlington pitcher Kramer supported by Beckner held Carthage to four runs, while C Aker and R Weidner each had two hits for the losers.
Lafuse pitched a no hitter Tuesday to beat Arlington 40. Carthage’s win featured strong fielding and timely hitting. A Porter added two singles for Carthage while a single accounted for another run.
Carthage jumped to a five-run first inning and rode strong pitching from J. Edwards to defeat North Salem 10-3. Edwards allowed only three hits and led the offense with a triple and a single.
Henry Terhune of Milroy and Mrs. C. O. Kinnett of Sandusky visit James Terhune who is convalescing at the Roscoe Brown home. Numerous callers include Clarksville Tenn guild, Louisville Kentucky and Indianapolis residents, and Daleville Cicero Mishawaka and Rushville connections.
