Mrs. Arthur White entered the clinic at New Castle on Monday for observation. Ross Parish of Knightstown entered Henry County hospital last week and underwent major surgery.
Mrs. Ercell Bever came home Wednesday evening from Rush Memorial hospital and is slowly improving.
Mary Patton, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Patton, will undergo surgery Friday morning at Methodist hospital.
W. H. Barbour was taken to Rush Memorial hospital for an emergency appendectomy completed Monday. Surgeons reported a steady recovery is expected.
Mr and Mrs James Ellis and their family along with Mrs Josephine Stevens took a motor trip from Thursday to Sunday visiting the Smoky Mountains, enjoying a family excursion in the scenic region.
Mr and Mrs Fred Flick attended the National Lily Show in Mansfield Ohio where 47 acres hosted 35 beautiful gardens on display.
Mr. and Mrs. Bayard Baker sent a card to Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hill noting their travels through Yellowstone Park Grand Canyon and Pikes Peak across seven states. They are expected back in Carthage by July 21, returning to Stuttgart Arkansas.
The Carthage Coal Co formerly run by H. T. Beher will be operated this year by Guy Ewing. The firm will handle the same coal line as before and will open for business on August 1, with orders directed to Mr. Ewing.
At the last quarterly meeting Paul Turner, a local preacher, was granted a license and elected as the church delegate for the Conference at Fairmount from August 6 to 13.
Mr and Mrs Norman Fuchs along with Mrs Dick Gibson and Mrs Rex Krieg took children to Junior Bible Camp at Fairmount Wesleyan Methodist Camp Ground. Mrs Krieg and Diane will stay this week with the group. others plan to return Saturday morning.
Mr and Mrs Albert Ray and sons Keith Ray Caleb Marsh and son Larry and daughter Judy are vacationing this week at Lake Shafer. Mr and Mrs Earl Addison are vacationing for two weeks at Hamlin Lake near Ludington Michigan. Mr and Mrs Delmar Sipes and daughters Patricia Norma and Sharon and Miss Janice Wilson are on several days vacation in Florida.
Richard Jackson Dean Gardner and Randy McClurg attend Quaker Haven at Dewart Lake near North Webster Indiana sponsored by the Friends church from Sunday to Friday this week. Mr and Mrs Robert Jackson and son Eldon accompanied the boys to camp on Sunday.
A Wednesday party at Mrs. Rema Allen’s Richmond home gathered former T. C. Club members. Attendees included Mrs. Bonnie Mayse Goshen Miss Ada Brown Warren Mrs. Lil lian Moore Mrs. Ethel White and Mrs. Lottie Kizer. Margaret Perisho joined and visited three college friends Pauline Starr Richmond Julian Clark Eaton Ohio and Miriam Wilhelm West Sonora Ohio.
A neighbor appeals to whoever took a plastic wading pool from the back yard last Tuesday evening. The note, signed by Mrs. Clyde Ruby, asks for the return, stating the pool is for children and urging others to act their age.
Elmer E. Hunt age 85 died suddenly at his home west of Carthage while watching television. Born September 17, 1870, he lived his life on the same farm and was a Walnut Ridge Friends Church member. Survived by Flora widow two daughters five sons fifteen grandchildren six great grandchildren. Funeral Friday at Walnut Ridge Friends Church with burial there. calling Thursday afternoon.
Ripley Township Conservation Club released about 400 crappie and 400 largemouth bass fingerlings into the Big Blue River above the Phillip Sattler farm. The State Conservation Club supplied the fish, and organizers hope the river becomes once again fishable with future good fishing.
The 10th annual Cub Scout coaster race occurs Saturday July 28 at 1 30 p m in Morristown. A parade led by Morristown High School Band precedes the race with race cars drivers and a pet parade. Girl Scouts Doll Show 4 H boys exhibits and refreshment stands along the street. A fish fry is planned at Legion Home grounds July 27 28. About twenty five cars will compete with daily practice through July 27.
Mr and Mrs Louis Humes hosted guests in Indianapolis with Mrs Robert Martz visiting later. Ruth Florence Henley Helen Hawkins returned from Quaker Haven Debart Lake after two weeks. Mrs Nelle Jackson and Mrs Goldie Hewstead visited local homes. Several relatives and friends visited and stayed across Hamilton County and nearby areas.
Registrar Charles E Harrell lists Rush County students at Bloomington and Indianapolis divisions for the Indiana University Summer Session. Total statewide enrollment reaches 8618, up 10 percent from last year. Bloomington campus headcount excludes credit workshops and institutes at 4306. J C Hackleman professor of crop extension and his wife were guest speakers at the Illinois Crop Improvement Association dinner in Champaign. Hackleman class of 1906, longtime Illinois University staff member since 1919 plans retirement September 1 after 38 years in crop extension and service with the Mutual Security Agency in Europe. He is a Carthage native, Purdue trained, and active in several fraternities.
More than two hundred calves have entered the Gold Medal Calf Show to be held at Rushville during the Rush County Fair on Friday August 3. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad sponsors trophies and ribbons. Carl Scott of Yorktown will judge the event with entries from nine eligible counties.

Ezra Asher Rumple of Carthage died Wednesday evening at 7 after three years of illness and 10 months bedfast. Born October 27, 1875, he was son of William Asher and Rachel Parish Rumple. Survived by his wife Della and six sons Raymond Knightstown William Anderson Lloyd Indianapolis Russell Ora Monticello Jesse, three daughters Mabel Thurston Wellsburg Bertha Steward Carthage Nellie Brown Mooreland. He belonged to Carthage Wesleyan Methodist church. funeral at local church with burial in Town Cemetery. exact service time not known.
Sixty one 4-H dairy club members and adults attended the annual dairy tour on Monday July 16 in Rush County. Purdue dairy specialist Norbert Moeller led discussions at each stop and a pitch in dinner was held at the Kuhn home. Topics covered included feeding care fitting training showing and selecting dairy cattle for 4-H and fair exhibitions. Several places visited were owned by Cameron Smith Geise Ariens Kuhn Peck Meyers and Wessel. Announcements about health papers entries and showing at the fair were made by A B Scaglia assistant county agent. Earl Addison chairman of the Rush County Dairy Committee invited all Dairy Club members and parents to the Dairy Show on August 1 at the Rush County Fair and to join the cooperative noon dinner in Memorial Park. Max Gordon of Lynn Indiana was named the dairy show judge.
Rush County farmers may claim a federal gasoline tax refund for farming use from January 1 to June 30, 1956. The refund is two cents per gallon, with claims due by October 1, 1956, using IRS form 2240. Records must verify farming use and exclude off farm or non farming gasoline.
Mr and Mrs Blaine Addison of Knightstown surprised Mr and Mrs Hobart with a Wednesday evening dinner. The group enjoyed a bountiful chicken dinner in a cordial gathering.
Rev. Ernest Norquist was chosen Chapter Chairman of the Rush County Red Cross for 1956 57 at the Durbin Hotel meeting on July 12. Others elected include Vice Chairman Mrs Marguerite Miller Secretary Mrs Melita Bundrant Treasurer Miss Olive Marie Miller and multiple township directors. A committee report followed and the film Tornado was shown.
Rush County officials expect a top tier fair with 4-H and open class entries across livestock, home economics, crafts, and exhibits. Highlights include tractor and midget races, horse pulling contests, dairy and beef shows, a Friday Kids Day with reduced rides, and the Gold Medal calf and beef shows featuring entrants from multiple counties. Judging begins July 26 with poultry on Monday and activities at the Memorial Gymnasium and Lower Community Center Fairgrounds.
Plans for a Walnut Ridge Quarterly Meeting of Friends revival run August 2 through August 12 at the Walnut Ridge Meetinghouse two miles west of Carthage. Dr. Lowell E Roberts of Friends University Wichita Kansas will speak with George Cole leading music each night at 7 45 p m and a 7 15 pre service prayer. Ministers from six churches participate and invite the public to attend.
Carthage high school blanked Boggstown 3 to 0 and 7th and 8th graders routed New Salem 13 to 1. In the senior league, Watkins tripled and McClurg homered as Carthage built a lead, while New Salem pitchers walked 21 Carthage batters in the rout. Next week’s schedule lists games against New Palestine Arlington and Knightstown with start times noted.
Mr and Mrs Jesse Pitts and Mr and Mrs Billy Pitts joined Mr and Mrs Jack Wessel and children for a two week visit in Ft Lauderdale Florida. Robert Moore and son Dick were business visitors in Indianapolis. Mrs Maria Aker and son Charles were Sunday guests of Robert Moore and William Gatewood with the Gatewoods returning home briefly. Mr and Mrs Blount Sharp of Arlington were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs Lestie Heifner.

Rush County Fair countdown sharpens with Forestry Division II rules. Four H club members must submit a completed record book and exhibit 5 or 7 blocks of Indiana wood, 4x5x% inch, mounted on a 22 by 28 inch board. Blocks may be bought from lumber firms. Reynolds Mfg offers nine Indiana tree samples. About 110 4-H members are enrolled in conservation projects, signaling many exhibits at the Fair.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Kennedy and children Judy and Lynn visited Tri Lake last week. Mr and Mrs Stanley Hawkins and daughter Lois spent the week at Pleasant Lake.
A Rush County group of about 75 girls earned spots to represent the county in District 4-H Club Judging at Indianapolis July 20. Winners were named across Baking Clothing Food Preparation Food Preservation Home Improvement and a district demonstration by Sharon King.
Des Moines reports that Bishop Richard C. Raines was assigned to a third four year term as Methodist bishop of Indiana by the North Central Jurisdictional Conference meeting July 11 14. Return to Indiana had been urged by resolutions from Indiana conferences and over 200 letters and telegrams from individuals and churches.
