Small Towns Have Most Of Accidents

Indianapolis July 13. Cities with populations under 3500 show a higher share of intersectional and pedestrian crashes than the state average. Hallie Myers, traffic director for the state highway commission, said the survey finds almost three times as many incidents in these areas.

A traffic survey by the bureau of traffic highlights higher intersection accidents in small towns on state highways, with head on collisions much lower than the state system. Reduced speed in small towns may lower damages and fatalities, while left turn corrections and lane hazards account for many crashes in communities under 3500 residents.

Lake Manitou in Fulton county covers 886.75 acres and ranks seventh largest in Indiana. Located one mile east of Rochester, the Hoosier Motor Club promotes a visit to this resort famed for legends of a monster and old Indian names Mah-nee-to and Mah-nat-o-wah. The lake’s irregular shore results from a dammed seven foot lowered outlet and merging basins. It is a premier fishing spot stocked yearly with smallmouth bass crappies sunfish perch pike goggle-eye and catfish.

The U S Bureau of Public Roads has approved plans for five grade separations funded entirely by a 1 2 million federal allocation dated July 1 1938 The partial program totals about 727 000 with one project already under contract the underpass on Road 40 near Indianapolis The other four structures pursue relocations on Road 20 around Valparaiso for bypass traffic under two railroads and a fifth on Road 6 in Hobart to clear Pennsylvania railroad and Gary Hobart Traction Line tracks Plans for the remaining separations are being prepared for bids and eventual construction.

The plan aims to improve High School road as part of the feeder road system. An overhead structure would replace a grade crossing, removing curvature and steep grades where the current structure crosses the Pennsylvania railroad.
