A Carthage party travels to Michigan spending a week at Hamlin Lake Ludington and another group stays a week at Saginaw. Rain of cloudburst proportions drenched Carthage and nearby areas last Saturday flooding lowlands and basements. Mrs. Carrie Newsom, 50, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Earl Addison after a heart attack while talking on a swing. Born July 2, 1888 in Shelby county, she married Alva A. Newsom in May 1911. he died October 1937. Survived by sister Mrs. Emma Jones of Warren, Pa., and brother Charles Anderson of Seymour, Indiana. Funeral Friday at 10 from Thompson Funeral Home with Rev. R. H. Myers. burial Walnut Ridge cemetery guarded by U. B. Thompson.
The Epworth League of the Fletcher M E church will meet at six each Sunday evening in the church during the summer. Open to all community youths and Leaguers. Rev Myers notes the Epworth League Institute at Rivervale near Mitchell Indiana will begin August first this year.
In Kingston Tennessee Uncle Felix Bush Breazeals aged 73 known as Uncle Felix, living on a hillside farm, was honored at his obsequies attended by more than 8,000 friends neighbors and visitors. He arrived in a hearse walked with pallbearers and signed many cards with an X. He requested the funeral be annual but said he would not want another after this one and called it mighty nice.
Mr and Mrs Roy Herkless spent two weeks at Ludington Michigan lake reporting fine weather and good fishing Roy caught some big ones on his hook though they got away leaving a hint of a successful trip despite losses

The official board of the Fletcher M. E. Church will meet Thursday night at seven thirty at the church. This will be one of the important business meetings of the year and all board members are expected to be present.
The Frazee Coal and Lumber Company won the annual coal contract and the bid of 6.54 dollars per ton was the lowest among four bidders for supplying coal to the courthouse, jail, and county infirmary.
Mrs Lon Bogue of Gwynneville, sister to Mrs John Butler, was moved to Major Hospital Shelbyville four months ago for a fractured bone. She returned home six weeks ago but her illness requires another hospital operation.
A firecracker exploded in John Retherford's hands causing burns. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Lee Retherford and is receiving treatment.
The second annual Tomato Festival draws huge crowds to Elwood on July 27 as 75 000 to 100 000 visitors are expected. Elwood becomes a hub of Indiana tomato industry for the event with local vendors and activities planned throughout the day.
Mr and Mrs Carroll Stevens of Mays announced the birth of an 814 pound son, Donald Fred, on Monday July 4. Carroll is the son of Mr and Mrs Fred Stevens of Mays.
Mr and Mrs Charles Benson attended the funeral of a cousin George Klingersmith six miles north of Lebanon on Monday.
Mrs. Mary Ewing 72 died Saturday morning at her home after several months illness. Born July 31, 1866, she lived mainly in Rush County and attended Carthage high school. She married Enos Phelps and later George Ewing. both husbands preceded her in death. She was a member of East Street Christian church. Funeral conducted at the Phelps home Monday at 2 PM with Rev. Orrow Kennerly and Rev. M. S. Kenworthy officiating. Burial in Glencove Cemetery at Knightstown. Many relatives from Raleigh, Rushville, Wilkinson, Dunreith, Spiceland, Fortville, Long Beach Calif., Elkheart, Goshen, Gwynneville, Terre Haute attended.
A single stalk in an 11 acre field near Clarinda Iowa reaches more than 61 feet in height with full tassel and two ears. Planted by Ross Miller on April 15, two weeks ahead of normal, it was laid by June 14, marking the earliest oversized corn in southwest Iowa.
