The Carthage Lions Club announces its annual family picnic on Monday July 15 at 6 30 p m on the grounds east of Carthage School buildings. President James Ellis asks all members and their families to attend and invites guests. Bring food drinks and table service.
Jimmie Ellis David Ruby and Kelly Veach spend the week at the Annual Purdue Band Camp on campus. The Band Camp students will present a concert Saturday evening at 6 30 p m on the campus.
Louise Tuttle of Carthage was appointed District Deputy of District No 1 by the Grand Matron at the grand session and banquet in Anderson on June 24. The district covers Richmond Anderson Connersville and Muncie under Prince Hall Grand Chapter. Rushville youth group Queen of Sheba sent Jeanette King Joella Goins Ronald Tuttle Luella Goins as leaders and sponsors at the meeting.
Service news notes Cpl Russell Shutt Jr of Ft Bragg on furlough at his parents home Mr and Mrs Russell Shutt. He will report to Oakland California on August 15 for overseas duty.
Warren Phelps aged 15, son of Mrs Norrene Phelps of New Castle and Harold Phelps of Carthage, will attend Culver Academy in Culver Indiana for two months this summer.
Mrs. Curtis Lewman, daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer Sandefur, entered Hancock County Hospital Thursday and will undergo major surgery Friday.
Judy Harrold and Kay Addison from Carthage Friends church joined Sara Jane Hunt Bobby Cooper Glen Smith and Robert Perisho from Walnut Ridge Friends Church at Quaker Haven Church Camp near Dewart Lake Indiana last week.
The General Telephone Company of Indiana announces a regular quarterly dividend of 50 cents per share on its $2.00 preferred stock. The dividend was declared at a Fort Wayne meeting on July 3 and is payable August 1 to shareholders of record July 15, 1957.
Five men Bill Aker Donald Cooper Donald Campbell Bill Todd and Sam Gray completed two weeks of Army Reserve training at Ft Carson Colorado and returned home Sunday evening.
Rushville Post Office will close its windows on Wednesday afternoons starting next week. All other services stay normal, and a stamp vending machine will be installed in the lobby when available.
Indiana fryer markets were steady to firm in pre holiday trade with good demand and short supplies. A total of 234,962 Hoosier raised fryers were reported sold for marketing Monday and Friday by Purdue extension poultryman Melvin L. Wilson. White Rock fryers 20-22c, mainly 22c. North 21c. South 21c. Fowl market steady with heavy hens 13-14c and Leghorns 9-10c. Egg market steady with A large 25-29c, A medium 22-24c, A small 15-18c, B large 19-24c, current receipts 22-23c.
A ten day revival sponsored by six area Friends churches runs July 18 to 28 at Walnut Ridge and partner churches. Evangelist Martha L. Archer of Kentucky Mountain Bible Institute preaches with George Cole leading songs. public invited.
Ted P. and Emily Cullin owners of the Blue Bird Restaurant had their beer and wine license rejected by the Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Commission after a heavy Morristown remonstrance. A 242 to 18 petition favored the denial, with no appeal possible though a new request can be filed in one year.
Purdue economists Patrick J. Luby and J. Carroll Bottum forecast hog prices near last year’s levels this fall and winter and into spring 1958. They cite USDA June 1 pig crop data and a steady breeding pace, with a 4 percent rise expected for June-August and slightly higher fall farrowing, aided by stronger summer hog prices and a steady corn hog feeding ratio.
Miss Mary-Lou Lukens and Miss Pat Todd were weekend guests of Mrs. William Todd at Indianapolis. They visited friends, attended local events, and returned home afterward.
Mrs. Mary Louise Geise was granted a divorce from James A. Geise on Wednesday July 3. The court restored her maiden name Mary Louise Hill.
Mrs. C. G. Hill remains poorly at her Carthage home. Miss Judy Kennedy slowly improves at Methodist Hospital. Mrs. Grant Henley remains about the same at home. Mrs. Joel Ridlen able to be about and slowly improves. Mrs. Ina Rhodes remains very poorly at Carthage home. Charles Moore remains the same at home. A. J. Carr recovering at St. Vincents Hospital from eye surgery last Friday.
Carthage High School defeated New Salem 11 to 1 on Tuesday night. Carthage exploded for six runs in the second inning on five hits, then added another tally in the eighth. Pitcher Magee earned the win with Trowbridge closing and Watkins catching for Carthage. New Salem struggled with English on the mound in the fifth.
Charlottesville 7th and 8th grade team defeated Carthage 12 to 3 in a lop-sided contest. Carthage took an early 3-0 lead but managed only that in the game. Brissendine led Charlottesville with 3 hits while Carthage had nine errors. Carthage batteries were Aker and Miner. Charlottesville batteries were Wall and Browning.
On Tuesday afternoon Carthage junior high defeated visiting Arlington 11-2. Eight walks, three hits and two errors fueled a nine-run first inning for Carthage. Pitching: Aker and J. Smith for Carthage with Patterson catching. Arlington's battery was Wolfe and Binder with Long.
Tives L. Fitch of Carthage Tractor & Implement Co. was injured Saturday afternoon around 4 when a spring on a being adjusted new combine struck him on the farm of Lot Newhouse near Henderson. His left arm broke in two places a finger dislocated and a chin wound required two stitches. He was taken to Rush Memorial Hospital and was expected to be released later in the week.
Miss Georgia Gibbs the recording star will replace the Andrews Sisters for three days at the Indiana State Fair Coliseum show August 28 29 30. The change follows the Andrews Sisters being placed on the unfair list by the American Guild of Variety Artists and dropped by General Artists Corporation. Gibbs scheduled July to September for her NBC television show.
James Webb tenth district president of the young Democrats says the State Convention will be at the Claypool Hotel Indianapolis July 26 27. The Silver Anniversary of the Young Democrat Clubs of America will be celebrated. John A Ruby of Carthage named to the Rules Committee. Webb invites Ripley Township delegates and others to contact him. The tenth district endorses Betty Holbrook Shelby County for secretary to the State Committee at the July 27 officers election.
Purdue extension beef cattle specialist Ken MacDonald notes July weighing for Gold Medal Calf Club participants. About 6,000 calves across 1,300 Indiana farms are enrolled. Weight cards are available from county agents. calves must gain two pounds daily for steel calves and bulls and 1.5 pounds for heifers, starting from an assumed 70 pounds.
Bertram Howard Post 316 American Legion held its first meeting of the new year at the Community Center. George McNabb was elected commander for 1957 58 and led twenty members through year plans including Fall Festival parade entries and displays. An executive committee election named Thomas Alexander Harold Dixon Jack Tweedy and Kenneth Rhodes. Past commanders remain members. James Webb heads a membership drive with about forty signups and a goal of 100 this year.
The Carthage M Y F held a July 1 meeting at 7 30 p m with Lois Hawkins presiding. Plans for a July 12 swim party at New Castle and a July 20 Ice Cream Social were laid. A mystery person contest was started and a Candlelight Service was planned for Stingers Woods.
Rev Basil Stultz, pastor at East Street Christian Church in Carthage, will end his 13 year ministry this Sunday. He led the congregation after a 1949 fire that razed the church and helped rebuild on the same site. No future plans announced. he is expected to work on his Arlington area farm.
Miss Myrtle E. Alsman aged 59 died July 10 at an Indianapolis hospital after months of illness. Born March 8, 1898 in Rush County she was daughter of William and Ella Spence Alsman. Survived by sister Mrs Marie Schuneman and brother Charles Alsman both of Indianapolis. Funeral at Frazier Funeral Home Morris town Friday at 2 p.m. burial East Hill Cemetery Arlington.
G A Williams of Purdue University urges dairy farmers to ease the July August milk slump with ample fresh water shade and ventilation. Cows should have water more than twice daily and access to good grazing at night. Rotational grazing and high quality feed help maintain milk production despite heat.
Mrs A J Carr hosted a Sunday pitch-in dinner at her country home north of Knightstown honoring Lambert Hiatt and his sons Jackie and Randy from Oklahoma City. Attendees included G H Jones H E Poston Herschell Higham and their children Robin Ann Eddie New Castle Ervin Renegar Lewisville R W Jones and children Timmie Patti Sue Connersville James Carr and children Anderson Gouldie Kyser Sharlee Kyser Hattie Innis Maude Porter Carthage.
Tuesday evening supper guests included Gladys Davis and others from Indianapolis and nearby towns visiting Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cappel of Greenfield. Other visitors on July Fourth included Mrs. Ruth Harrelson and Mrs. Julia McMichael in Richmond. Linda Harrold stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Osry Draper in Mays.
The 19th annual Rush County Garden Tour for 4H and adults is planned for Friday July 12 with five stops. Purdue garden specialist W B Ward will lead discussions and demonstrations at Randy Reynolds Milroy garden at 9 30 am, then John Burd garden at 10 45 am followed by a cooperative dinner. Stops include James Keppel Orange township and gardens of Jesse Hungerford Orange township and Frank Webb Rushville township. 4H members and gardening enthusiasts urged to attend with baskets drinks and personal service.
Arlington strengthened its league lead by defeating Gamble 3 1 Monday night. GE edged Carthage 15 5 in the opener as Cates walked 11 in six innings and Ashcraft had four hits three doubles and a homer for GE. Edwards and Lawrence doubled for Carthage.
Arlington wins a six hit game as McCleese belts a three run homer in the third to supply all Arlington runs. L Dalrymple adds Gambles lone extra base hit while Cecil Tague fanned 11 and Norm Morris struck out six. Both teams had one walk and two errors.
International and Green Way posted wins in Arlington Softball League action on Tuesday. International defeated Fairland 4 to 2 after rallying in the late innings as Fairland left the bases loaded with no outs. Jordan led International with two doubles, Personette added a double, and Lakin homered. Batteries were Collins and Personette for International and Hauk and Mullin for Fairland.
Carthage managed only three hits in the nightcap. Bode struck out 13 with seven walks for Green Way. Plank doubled for the losers while Baker homered and Oldham tripled for the victors. Batteries Lewman McClurg Green Way Bode Larrison.
Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt and daughter Pamela enjoy a sightseeing vacation visiting Garden City Michigan Earl Johnson and family then continuing to Toronto and Ottawa Canada. They report a wonderful time and many interesting sights.
Mrs Opal Liggett and her Clayton children were holiday guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Russell Shutt, sharing a festive gathering and hospitality.
The Iva Jackson Restaurant on North Main Street was sold last Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. George Schuck who assumed ownership on Monday. Mrs. Jackson and her family have purchased a new business in Steuben County near Lake Jimmerson. Mr. Jackson will join his wife in northern Indiana. The Schucks promise the same good meals and invite the public to visit. John and Mrs. Jordan opened a restaurant on East Mill Street serving short orders sandwiches and pie. The Jordan Cafe has been open about ten days.
