J. O. Schwarz presents a merry go round on the Newsom lot north of The Citizen Office all next week. Bring the children for pony rides and a sleigh ride. Enjoy good music and a fun time for everybody.
The storm caused heavy losses to residents including John and Albert Leisure with timber wreckage and several homes damaged. A barn, porch roof, and unroofed house were reported along with destroyed fruit trees. Local farmers carry cyclone insurance and insurers report rising policy sales.
Forest Rawls suffered a severe two finger burn on July 4. R B Henley of Cincinnati and W P Henley were guests at breakfast with Charlie E White and family. The Sharer family and guests Miss Mench enjoyed a Blue River picnic and bathing on Monday. Miss Rapp, an expert horsewoman, attracted much attention with her riding.
Little Marcella Lineback had tonsils and adenoids removed at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis on Monday and was moved Tuesday to the home of Mr and Mrs F H Holt where she is reported to be doing nicely. J A Lineback visited his daughter Tuesday.
Community notices list residents visiting relatives and friends in towns including Marion Knightstown Indianapolis and Rushville plus visits to Milroy Spiceland and Claypool Hotel. A union church services series is planned for July and August with speakers from Friends East St Christian Wesleyan Fletcher M E and more.
Granville D. Miller was struck by Rolla Alexander’s auto while crossing near Henley’s corner. The car wheel passed over his arm and legs, with a heavy cast piece from the vehicle weighing 500 pounds involved. Miller was taken home and reports only shoulder and arm pain with no internal injuries.
W. J. Henley and J. R. Publow request that no more driving of buggies or lead ing horses occur through the farm, seeking adherence to a capped practice or precaution on the property.
Elias Reddick and his wife from Knightstown and Drury Alsman and wife visited Mr and Mrs Will Siler on Sunday. William H. Binford and wife Emory Binford and Prof and Mrs Arthur Walter were guests of James Garfield and family on Sunday.
Aseneth H Reece died June 28 at her home in Carthage after a long life of teaching and service. Born in North Carolina into a Southern family, she studied at Westtown Boarding School and later taught there. She married Davis Reece in 1860, who served as governor of Westtown School for thirty years. After his death she cared for her mother in Carthage for fifteen years, then returned east. She led the McConkey Kindergarten board and served on the Burrough School Board. Funeral services were held at Chestnut Street Meeting House with several Friends attending. burial followed at Friends Burial Ground Oak.
Mr and Mrs Will B Hill and daughter hosted a Sunday dinner party with relatives and friends from Carthage Missouri Cedar Falls Iowa Indianapolis and Cincinnati including Irene Elliott F Earl Birch Nathan Binford Leora Hill Bettie Greenfield Amanda Elliott Lillian and Lora Winslow and Hower Henry Lape y Prof and Mrs Trueblood and families. A Mile Fourth picnic at J R Hills in Mile was also attended by the group and the Truebloods later visited H H and Jesse Henley and their families.
The Urbana Citizen reports little John Bishop died of diphtheria after a sore throat worsened on Tuesday morning. The Bishop family, including Esther and Elizabeth, contracted the illness but are recovering. The house was quarantined at noon that day, and J. W. Bishop arranged the funeral and care during quarantine. Mrs Rawls attended the funeral and remains with the family.
Rev. C. O. Whitely delivered a patriotic sermon Sunday morning as the pulpit featured a large American flag. The service focused on national pride and civic duty.
Miss Jennie C Cobb of Franklin now Mrs Williams of Chattanooga Tenn wed June 6 thirteen years after first arriving in Carthage as the thirteenth member of the old L L L Club A man of thirteen bachelor units will be thirteen years old next October since the Club formed George T Hanes and Mrs Schooley of Dublin Ireland are told of Mrs Hanes and her mother planning a trip to Kansas and Colorado late July to visit relatives Mrs Hanes will travel via Indianapolis to meet her mother
Rev C O Whitely arranged with the Big Four for a Winona Lake excursion on July 26 opening the Assembly of the Young Friends of America which runs to August 2. He will lead a class in personal work and conduct the closing consecration service. Friends stay at Kociosko Lodge with sessions in the lodge auditorium. departures from Carthage at 6 30 a m with several locals planning to join and stay awhile.
Floyd Howland sustained a double fracture of the left arm and a serious hip injury after a fall from a high bridge in Knightstown on Tuesday. He was brought home that night, and his condition is described as very serious with intense suffering. His longtime caregiver, Mrs Howland, a widow, bears the burden of his past injuries and ongoing care.
A. O. Hill came back from Westchester Pennsylvania after attending his sister Mrs Reece funeral. Mrs M E Conoway who cared for Mrs Reece will not return to Carthage for two or three weeks. Mr Hill and Mrs Conoway were guests at a dinner Sunday night hosted by W G Allan and Miss ell.
Calocide Compound for sale at Denton and Moore's. Mrs Thomas Smith and daughters with C. E. Smelser joined a party at Rushville on Monday and picnicked on Flatrock. Mrs P J Sattler hosted dinner Sunday for her mother Mrs J H McCarty's birthday. Guests included Mr and Mrs McCarty L B McCarty Fred F Brenan and Jobin D White and family of Walnut Ridge.
