Death of John Henry Gates at 75 in Greenfield
John Henry Gates aged 75 died at his home 640 North East Street Greenfield at 2 pm Sunday after a long illness. Funeral services were held at Friends Church Tuesday at 2 pm with burial in Park Cemetery. He is survived by a son Fred two daughters Mrs Daniel Reed and Mrs Lassie Binford two sisters Mrs Ella McClarnon and Mrs Morton Allender. He was a member of Brown's Chapel church and had lived in the county 40 years. His family traced to pioneer Gates settlers in Rush and Ripley townships with roots back to John and Mary Gates who emigrated from Pennsylvania and Virginia in 1826.

Old 1837 Letter in Rushville Preserved by Local Collector
Leonidas M. Coons of Rushville preserves a nearly century old letter addressed to George C. Hurt of Georgetown Kentucky mailed in 1837 before postage stamps. The Missouri origin from Clay County carried 25 cents and was sent by Richard Hurt to his brother. The letter is well preserved and valued as a local curiosity by longtime residents.

Raleigh defeated Carthage 30 to 12 as the Blue Birds fought hard and faced rough breaks. New Salem handled Milroy 23 to 14, Manilla edged Morton 26 to 27, and Manilla won 32 to 4 in the nightcap. Seed corn school in Hancock to test ears
