Mr and Mrs Gale Barry welcomed a son named Mark Edward who weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces at birth on January 13 at Hancock County Hospital. Luther Hall returned home Thursday from Rush Memorial Hospital.
The East St Christian Church groups met January 22 with Sally Bush playing piano for the prayer song. Mrs. Arminta Ruby led the prayer before groups separated into classes. The LHS group measured 3 attendees with one teacher, Mrs. Ethelyne Parish, and a 20 cent offering. Mrs. Norma McKain's Chi-Rho group had 3 attendees and 26 cents offered. The C.Y.F. group, taught by Mrs. Arminta Ruby, had 3 attendees and 45 cents offered. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Seaman Tom Roberts and his wife welcomed a son, Todd Anthony, weighing 6 pounds 2 ounces, born January 19 at Rush Memorial Hospital in Carthage. Grandparents are Mrs. Velma Todd and Mrs. Hazel Roberts.
Three new teachers join New Salem school for the second semester announced by county superintendent Gerald Carmony. Howard Addison of Spiceland will teach mathematics, Joseph Douthitt of Greenfield will teach social studies and English, and Mary Lou Parks of Delphi a recent Indiana University graduate will teach the second grade.
The Knights of Pythias Lodge of Knightstown hosts the 17th annual Public Speaking Contest for U S and Canada high school students. Topic is My Hope For My Country. First prize is a $1500 college scholarship, runner up $750, and four finalists receive $500 each. Contacts include Carlisle Butcher Knightstown and Clarence Dulake Carthage.
Minor loot totaling about $10 taken in a Sunday dawn break-in at the Henley Pool Room Carthage entry gained by prying the back door. Stolen items include cigarettes coffee and potato chips. Town Marshal Hugh Trowbridge and State Trooper Walter Love investigated.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bash of Greenfield observed their 68th wedding anniversary at their country home Sunday evening. Their children and grandchildren enjoyed a cooperative dinner and social time. Sons Thomas Bash and Mrs. Bash, and Kenneth Bash and family attended from Carthage.
The Rush County Lincoln Day banquet will be held Wednesday night February 14 at the Durbin Hotel. Richard A. Phillips Republican chairman announced that Mrs. Dorothy Gardner state auditor and Congressman Ralph Harvey will speak. The observance is annual and organized by the county GOP. Additional details will follow. Also notes visitations: Bob Harrold of Purdue University spending vacation with the Harrold family. Mr and Mrs Caleb Marsh and daughter Judy visited the Gilford Marsh family. Mrs John Cass of Cumberland visited with Delmar Sipes and family.
Joel Franklin Ridlen 67 of Carthage R. R. 1 died suddenly at home Tuesday evening. He was born September 10, 1894 in Ripley township, worked twenty eight years in the grocery business and owned the Loyal Hunt store before retiring in 1959. He married Minnie Ramsey on December 23, 1913, who survives along with two foster daughters, a granddaughter and two great grandchildren. Four brothers preceded him in death. He was active in Carthage Fletcher Methodist Church. Funeral Friday at 10 a.m. at Hampton Mortuary, Rev. Paul Mayfield officiating. Burial Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Harley Duke age 82 of Lapel Indiana died Sunday at Noblesville hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Fisher Brothers Funeral Home in Lapel. Survived by wife two sons Joe Duke Pendleton Indiana and Warren Duke Cleveland Ohio and two grandchildren. Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt and Mr and Mrs Ralph McClarnon attended.
Members and spouses attended a January 17 dinner at the Blue Bird Restaurant Morristown. New officers elected are Lloyd Manuel president Robert McKain vice president Mrs Clyde Ruby secretary treasurer and Mrs Robert McKain assistant secretary. Annual list of 1952 members includes Carthage Hardware Carthage Citizen Manuel Market Joyce Fashion Shop and others.
Grace M. Sullivan 71 of Arlington died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Maxine VanQosdel west of Arlington at 3 25 p m Saturday after three years of illness She was born August 15 1890 in Posey Township daughter of William and Cora Shaffer She was married first to Chester V Lee then to Claude Sullivan who died February 28 1948 Survivors include her daughter Mrs Van Osdel a son Fred E Lee two stepdaughters Mrs Marjorie Overman and Mrs Kathryn Sednek five grandchildren and several other relatives She was a member of Arlington Christian Church and the Order of Eastern Star Carthage and active in several clubs
The American Legion and Auxiliary plan a March of Dimes campaign in Carthage starting Monday at 6 30 p m. They will conduct the door to door drive to support the fundraiser and awareness efforts.
Carthage High School students compete in the Saturday Solo Ensemble at Indiana Central College Indianapolis. Diana Whitfield and Jean Terhune enter piano solos. vocal groups include a sextet Deanna Carroll Sue Siler Jane Hunt Pam Hunt Carol Carver Jeannine Terhune and a trio Pam Hunt Carol Carver Jean Terhune. They are accompanied by Lynn Kennedy. A cafeteria ticket notice changes prices starting February 1 due to a government reimbursement program. Juniors and seniors ran concessions at the county tourney and express thanks to sponsors Miss Mercer and Mr. Mills.
After winning the championship, Raiders and fans gathered for a bonfire and parade led by the fire engine. A pep session followed the semester break, with Coach McCloskey thanking students. A school-wide celebration continued as classes resumed Tuesday.
For the fifth time in its history Carthage claims the county tourney title nets trophy and horseshoe. Raiders, coaches and fans celebrate with sportsmanship praised by peers and school. Cheerleaders and pep club honored for fine showing as Carthage supporters rally behind victory.
Harold Thomas Hinton 30 of Arlington suffered critical injuries in a one car crash on the Carthage Arlington Road near Arlington and died after being extricated at Rush Memorial Hospital. Nancy Miller and Franklin Eugene Miller of Knightstown were killed in a noon crash at Washington Street and U S 40 Knightstown involving a bread truck two police cars and another Ohio bound car.

Ripley Township raised 323.50 this year under campaign chair Mrs. Cecil Pike, beating the 300 quota and topping last year by about 65. Gratitude goes to donors for strong community support of Rush County tuberculosis program.
On Thursday February 1 the cafeteria served chili, toasted peanut butter jelly sandwich, buttered green beans, apple delight, and milk, providing a balanced meal option for students.
The Carthage Raiders defeated Milroy 67 to 48 to claim the Rush County title. Led by coach Norm McCloskey and assistant Larry Jordan, Carthage built a 16-10 first-quarter lead and pulled away to 53-24 by the third period before using reserves late. Weidner Gatewood and Jon Smith starred on offense, Marvin Heim fed the scorers, while Milroy struggled with late-game depth. Box score follows.
Carthage Raiders defeated visiting Waldron 58 to 54 to improve to 8 6. Gatewood led Carthage with 17 points while Jordan and Weidner added 13 and 12. Waldron’s Wagner 12 and Hiens 11 paced the Mohawks who staged a late rally but fell short. Gene Patterson fouled out after scoring 21.
The Raiders edged Mays 36 28 in a tense semi final after a seesaw first three quarters tied at 18 18. Jordan scored 8 of 9 shots as Gatewood and Hughes battled through a tight contest in Center township with Raiders pulling away late.
The 43rd Founders Day Lunch of Kappa Kappa Sigma was held in the Crystal Room at the Continental Hotel Indianapolis on Saturday January 20 at 1 PM. The program theme Hats On Hats Off to Kappa Kappa Sigma featured hats to illustrate the talk by Hats Shop Indianapolis and Continentalaires of eee High School performed. Guests modeled hats and two hats were awarded as prizes. Saturday morning Mrs Stager and Mrs White of the Carthage Chapter attended Grand Council. Other Sigma Chapter attendees included Mrs Windsor Mrs Walker and Mrs Weber alongside Grand Council members.
