Rush County Angus Cattle Breeders elect new officers

Lowel Stevens of Noble Township was elected chairman of the Rush County Angus Cattle Breeders Association at the annual meeting held last Thursday evening at the Durbin Hotel. Donald Staten Jr. of Ripley was chosen vice president and Lowell Innis Jr. of Anderson named secretary treasurer. James Readle, past president, presided as the group enjoyed a post meeting dinner. Several 4H boys and girls attended as guests.

Ministerial group to sponsor safety program

The Carthage Ministerial Association announces a safety program titled Accidents and Causes and Safety. The event is Thursday February 8 at 7:30 am in the Community Center. Clarence Justice of the New Castle and Henry County First Aid Unit will present slide pictures and explain accident causes.

Mrs Edrie Overman Dies After Long Illness

Mrs Edrie Overman of Crawfordsville died Tuesday morning in Crawfordsville after a lengthy illness and lung surgery. March of Dimes Report Netted By Local Legion Group

The March of Dimes drive sponsored by the American Legion and Auxiliary raised 196 dollars and 75 cents. Contributions included 159 dollars and 85 cents from the Mother's March and 26 dollars and 12 cents from the Wilkinson Carthage basketball game. The Legion and Auxiliary thank all participants.

Public Service Co Files New Petition in Indiana

Public Service Company of Indiana filed with the Public Service Commission an intervening petition opposing Hoosier Cooperative Energy Inc. and 17 REMCs using a $60.225 million REA loan to build a generating station and transmission system in Southern Indiana. The filing argues this would waste duplicative facilities and violate Indiana utility regulation aimed at preventing waste and ensuring coordinated generation and transmission. The petition notes prior REC stance in 1937 and cites a 1,000 MW reserve power capacity among investor-owned utilities to meet emergencies and growth.

Carthage Raiders Fall to Spiceland Stingers in Narrow Loss

Spiceland Stingers defeated Carthage 77 to 60 as Mike Hall led with 37 points. Spiceland shot 53.5 percent and outpaced the Raiders on home court, despite Carthage out-rebounding 37 to 26.

Mrs Isabelle Dill Seeks Re nomination for Rush County Recorder

Mrs Isabelle Dill announces candidacy to succeed herself as Rush County Recorder in the Republican primary on May 8. She is finishing her first term and is wife of Russell Dill, residing at 1120 North Main Street. The Dills moved to Rushville in 1960 after 13 years as Republican precinct committeemen in Washington Township. They are parents of Larry Dill, a Purdue University senior, and Janet Dill, a Butler University junior. She belongs to the Main Street Christian Church and Kappa Kappa Kappa Sorority, is a charter member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and serves on the Rush County Tuberculosis Association board. Previously active in Rush County Home Economics Clubs and was an adult 4-H leader.

Three Men Fined on Traffic Cases in Rushville Court

Three men paid fines on traffic charges in JP Court in Rushville Tuesday after warnings earlier. John W. Carpenter, 49, Connersville, pleaded guilty to traveling 45 in a 30 zone after a January 23 arrest by city police. Albert Chambers, 23, Cincinnati, cited for 50 in a 30 zone in Arlington. William F. Mills, 26, Carthage, charged with failure to yield after a recent accident near that community. All were fined 1 dollar and costs totaling 18.75 dollars.

County Masons Form Past Masters Group

The Past Masters of Masonic Lodges in Rush County met Saturday to form a Past Masters organization. Lodges represented were Rushville Milroy Carthage and Raleigh. Officers elected: President Ralph Morgan Rushville Vice President Earl Brown Milroy Treasurer Gary Steward Carthage Secretary Thurman Small Raleigh. Next meeting February 24 at Rushville to complete the group.

McNabb Receives Civic Award At Knightstown Dinner

The Knightstown Business and Professional Women's Club honored Dr. George B. McNabb of Carthage with the annual Civic Award at a 6:30 p.m. Civic Night gathering at the Knightstown Masonic Hall. Around 125 guests attended as Mrs. Rachel King presided and introduced Rev. Robert Kendall who gave the invocation. Dr. McNabb, born in Lawrence County, a World War I veteran, has practiced in Carthage since 1920 and holds multiple medical affiliations.

Raiders Entertained at Carthage School Dinner

Mrs. Odessa Bieschke hosted a T-Bone steak dinner in the Carthage High School cafeteria on Wednesday night honoring the Rush County Champion Carthage Raiders. Guests included the team, Coach McCloskey, assistant coach Larry Jordan, student managers, yell leaders, principal Ralph Brenton, trustee William Skinner, and County Supt. Gerald Carmony. The menu featured punch with lime sherbet, shrimp cocktail, stuffed celery, olives, carrot curls, pickles, broiled T-Bone steaks, baked potatoes, buttered peas, head lettuce salad, rolls, ice cream, cookies and milk. Raider place cards were by Statia Griffin.

Fire destroys home on South Walnut Street

The fire department responded to George Schuck’s residence on South Walnut Street around four o'clock Thursday after an oil stove overheated and ignited the house. Smoke and heat caused extensive damage to most furnishings and interior of the home.
