The Carthage Adult Farmer Class will meet Monday Jan 22 at 7 30 p m in the science room of the local high school. Richard Harrold of Knightstown Elevator will speak on Beef Nutrition and Management. Refreshments will be served.
Max Newby of Ladine Missouri received recognition at the Demolay chapter dinner in St. Louis marking its 40th anniversary. He serves as an executive with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co and was a charter member of the Alton Chapter organized and installed December 28 1921.
Mrs. Joseph Graff is confined to bed and convalescing at home. Luther Hall had major surgery at Rush Memorial Hospital last Tuesday. Mrs. Eugene I. Gardner improves slowly at the New Castle Clinic after major surgery. Mrs. Lindley Taylor improves at the New Castle Clinic after surgery. Mrs. Harry Smith is recovering at the New Castle Clinic after major surgery and plans to return home Saturday. Dr. John T. Scull, formerly a minister, moved to Jackson Nursing Home in Rushville with Mrs. Scull. Mrs. Michael Ruby of Fayetteville NC entered Fort Bragg Womach Army Hospital for observation, room 9-A.
Mr and Mrs Robert Proctor of Rushville announce the birth of their daughter Krista Ann born January 12 at Rush Memorial Hospital weighing 8 pounds 1 ounce. Krista is the granddaughter of Foster Wilson and Thomas Proctor.
W O Moore former Carthage mortician died at his Muncie home last Friday. Funeral held at Friends Church Monday with burial at Mt Summit Indiana. Survived by wife Eva daughter Crystle Jane Whelan Muncie one son William of Miami Florida four grandsons William Jr Walter S Robert Moore Miami and Joe Whelan of Muncie.

Randy A Gulley son of Mr and Mrs J R Gulley of Carthage Ind joined a nine week basic training program at Naval Training Center Great Lakes Ill starting December 26 The program includes classroom lessons in naval topics leadership etiquette drill fitness swimming survival first aid shipboard safety and security duties with counseling to guide his future Navy rating from over 65 job fields
The Carthage Volunteer Fire Department logged 13 runs in 1961 including 5 house fires 3 grass fires 2 autos 2 barns and 1 gas tank. Financially the department is improving and has paid off the tractor debt. A new resensitator is ready for use and donations are thanked.
Spelling bees across grades 3 to 12 crowned champions on January 15 with Kim Tweedy winning third and fourth grade, Don Fletcher taking fifth and sixth, Billy Henley top junior high, and Jeannine Terhune the senior high winner. The champions advance to February county bee. End of first semester noted with January 22 dismissal, exams graded, report cards January 24.
Sue Mosier led the 1962 Betty Crocker Search in homemaking knowledge earning the top score and eligibility for the State Homemaker of Tomorrow scholarship of 1500 dollars. The program reports record enrollment of 406132 girls in 12874 schools.

About one hundred members attended a dinner and social meeting at the Community Center in Carthage. President Lowell Beach chaired with Rev. Milroy Carthage and Mays advanced to the semi finals with Thursday night victories. Line scores show tight contests and key performances across the three teams.

Sylvia L Bowen filed a petition in Rush Circuit Court Rush County Indiana requesting a name change to Sylvia L Reddick. The court will hear the petition on the first day of the March Term 1961.
Ball State Teachers College lists 105 fall quarter honor roll students among 7,803 full-time on campus. Rush County trio Nancy S. Kramer Rushville Ardith L. Levi Rushville and James R. Kuhn Manilla R R 1 earned all A grades with 12 or more hours.
Funeral services for Charles William Byrd 38 of Chula Vista California were held at 2 p m in Carthage with Rev Robert Shockney officiating Burial followed at Glen Cove Cemetery Masonic rites were conducted Byrd died from injuries after a traffic accident in La Mesa California He was born May 29 1923 in Tennessee and married January 15 1949 to Ruth Henderson Surviving are his widow two daughters Barbara and Loraina Ann his parents Mr and Mrs Willie G Byrd of Rogersville Tennessee four brothers George Richard Willie G Jr and Grady and a sister Margaret all of Rogersville Tennessee He lived in Carthage years ago before moving to California in 1958 and had operated an appliance store in Knightstown and later worked as a Dairy Mart milkman in Chula Vista. He was a member of the First Christian Church Chula Vista Masonic Lodge Bridgeport Ind Commandery Knightstown and Scottish Rite Indianapolis.
Mrs King presided at the January meeting of the Business and Professional Women's Club themed by a red and white centerpiece and international flags. Civic Night was announced for January 25 at the Knightstown Masonic Temple with Mrs DeLone Henley directing the program and Mrs Helen Ruby sharing experiences from trips to Caracas and Mexico.
Six teams competed last night as the annual Rush County basketball tournament returned to the scene. The County tournament began as a Rushville High School invitational in 1920 and shifted to a countywide event in 1925 under principals and coaches, with a one year halt in 1943 due to wartime rationing.
Raiders defeated visiting Arlington 66 to 51 after losing earlier this year at Arlington 62 to 45. Key players Jordan Gatewood Marvin Heim reached double figures with 17 16 and 14 points as Arlington foul trouble limited Bill Kramer.
Wilkinson outscored Carthage 26 11 in the final period to pull away for a 75 66 road win. Randy Grass led Wilkinson with 26 points while Gatewood posted 24 for Carthage and Jon Smith added 16 with Marvin Heim 13 as the Bulldogs improved late.
Carthage FFA defeated Arlington 57 to 39 after leading 24 to 17 at halftime. Key scorers for Carthage included Homer McMahan 15, Jim Gorman 16, Eddie McMahan 14, and Dick McCorkle 8 while Arlington’s Wibster led with 17 points. A Jan 19 FFA tournament game against Milroy is noted along with a Feb 1 meeting.
