The Carthage PTA will hold a meeting Monday night at 7 30 at the Carthage school building. A student spelling bee will entertain attendees.
Mrs Worth Pitts and Mrs Fern Revolt will host the Legion Auxiliary gathering Monday night January 15 at Mrs George McNabb home for the meeting.
The Carthage Volunteer Fire Department invites the public to a Tuesday January 16 meeting at 7 p.m. at the Community Center to view and demonstrate the new recuscitator purchased for the Carthage community.
Mrs. Eugene I. Gardner and Mrs. Lindley Taylor were admitted to the New Castle Clinic on Thursday for major surgery scheduled for Friday.
Mr and Mrs Noah Leisure arrived in St Petersburg Florida last week for a winter vacation. They reside at 208 Twelfth Ave North Apt 1.
Carthage’s Carth-Knight defeated Rushville visitors 2546 to 2457. J Molden posted 210 and 208 games, Casey Wyatt 204, while G Abernathy led Rushville with 203. Team totals list Molden 589 Wyatt 504 Holmlund 501 Shutt 492 Trowbridge 460 for Carthage and Abernathy 561 BerkeMeier 530 Berkemeier 471 Rehme 476 Smiley 424 for Rushville.
A boy born to Mr and Mrs Richard Ruby of R R 2 Rushville on January 4. A boy born to Mr and Mrs Fred Smith of Carthage at Rush Memorial Hospital on January 6. A girl born to Mr and Mrs Kenneth Whitfield of Knightstown on January 10 at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville.
David Michael Grocox 17 son of Mr and Mrs Grocox enlisted Tuesday January 2 in the United States Navy. He is stationed at Great Lakes Illinois and was a Rushville High School junior before entering the service.
Virgil Hunt announced a new informational and counseling service via nine IU centers to aid Rush County residents in learning about higher education options. Centers provide admission, scholarships, loans, degree programs, non credit courses, and seek input on community needs. Public school counselors and students should contact William A. Jones in Indianapolis for guidance. Airman Julia Elmore returned to James Connally AFB after holidays with relatives. Ripley Conservation Club to host Fox Drive on Saturday Jan 13 starting 9 p.m.. meet at Community Center and lunch at noon.
Carthage High School coverage highlights exams upcoming the county tourney with Carthage Blue Raiders facing New Salem Arlington band plans a halftime routine and FFA initiation followed by a religious convocation. Grade items note first graders review mobile tests and fifth grade finalists for a spelling contest alongside class news.
A junior bowling league for boys aged 9 to 13 was organized last Saturday at Carth Knights Bowling Lanes and will open for full team participation this Saturday. Signups begin at 1 PM this Saturday January 13. Practice scores include Tom Pearson 339 Rick McNabb 336 Alva Porter 332 and others.
The Carthage Community Brotherhood and Sisterhood will meet at 7 p.m. Monday January 15 at the Community Center. Rev. Lewis Smith of Arlington Christian Church will lead devotions. Members and interested persons are urged to attend. Annual dues for 1962 payable. Arlington Male Quartet to perform followed by social time with ham sandwiches baked beans pie and coffee.
The Carthage Raiders were defeated by New Palestine 63 to 50 last Friday, then beat Fayette Central 79 50 on Tuesday. Coach McCloskey rotated 11 players in search of a winning combination as New Palestine used a tall center Marv Pruet 6 8 to loom large. The locals struggled after a long layoff and were out rebounded and poorly shooting, with the visiting team leading every quarter 17 11, 33 20, 58 36. The second team fared better, taking a 45 36 win over the visitors’ reserves.
Robert McKain announces his run for Trustee of Ripley Township subject to the Republican Primary on May 8, 1962. A veteran of World War II, he has led local civic efforts and is tied to the Alexander Gravel Company, East Street Christian Church, Carthage Better Business Association and the American Legion. He is a Carthage High School graduate, married to Norma Lee Parish with two children, Sherry and Terry.
Judge William F. Marshall orders a special election for May 8 on Rush County’s proposed school reorganization program after the county schooling committee reports no petition requesting the plan's 90 day implementation. The plan creates a one unit system for the county and Posey Township in Franklin County.
The State Bank of Carthage reports no changes in directors or personnel at their meeting. Directors listed include Howard E. Henley and Ross J. Tweedy among others with Henley as president and trust officer, Tweedy as vice president, and Dixon as cashier and assistant trust officer. No changes were made at First National Bank of Mays in annual stockholders meeting. E Earnest retained as inactive vice-president among renamed officers and directors. Arlington State Bank also retained top officers and directors including Swain as president and Orme as cashier.
George Riggs announced a county convocation for students at 10:00 a.m. January 17, 1962, in the Court House court room. Leon J. McDonald known as the Billy Sunday of oil conservation will speak to students and then attend the Soil District annual banquet at the Durbin Hotel the same evening.
Mrs Lloyd Manuel hosted the Carthage Home Garden Club at her country home east of Carthage with twelve members present. Officers were retained for another year: Forrest Moore president, Thomas Bush vice president, Gouldie Kyser secretary treasurer. New member Wilbur McCorkle joined. future meetings set for 1 30 pm. The program titled Perennial Panel featured papers on Albums Anemones Anthusas Epimediums by members with Hogarth Curve arrangements.
Cathy Ruby of Carthage was among 113 freshmen receiving the cap at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital School of Nursing on January 5 1962. Rev Robert Gingery spoke and Florence Nightingale pledge followed candles. Class graduates in 1964.
The Rush County Soil Conservation District completed plans for its annual banquet at the Jan 3 meeting. George Riggs presided as chairman. The event on January 17 at the Durbin Hotel will feature the Twelve Girls from Rushville High School and an illustrated talk by Leon J. McDonald on Man and the Land. Tickets are available from district officials and the Extension Office.
Charles Byrd of San Diego California died in a hospital after being struck by a car on Wednesday. He formerly lived in Carthage and was married to Ruth Henderson. The Byrd family moved to California three years ago with their two children. Ralph Henderson of Carthage and Josephine Graham of Indianapolis are traveling to California by plane. Details of the funeral were not known at press time.
Mrs. Helen Pope hosts in West Carrollton with the Nelsons. Donna McCorkle and Mrs. Howard McCorkle visit the Magers in Greenfield and shop at Eastgate. McCorkle relatives visit Indianapolis and Indianapolis area families. Parish and McNutt families connect in Pendleton and Marion. Windsor Porter visit Cincinnati.
Four groups of Noble Township members led pledges and devotional remarks as 4H leaders met at the Conservation Club. Nancy Morris chaired the session and announced workshop and event dates with plans for National 4H Club Week and fundraising committees.
