Carthage received its first real winter blow last Sunday and Monday with 8 inches of snow and drifts up to four to five feet. The business district was buried but the street department cleared most main roads by Tuesday afternoon. Snow remains but business continues, a slow return to normal. Many called it the first real eastern winter in years, hoped to be the last for 1964.
Mr and Mrs James D Hill of Rushville announce the birth of a son named Scott Bernard born Monday night weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces He is the great grandson of Mrs Jessie McGeorge of Carthage and grandson of Mr and Mrs Dale Spangler and Dr Kenneth Hill all of New Castle
The December real estate report shows $241,000 in total transactions, with $148,200 from farm sales, $75,800 city transfers, and $17,000 suburban deals. Largest farm sale reached $26,000. Notable transfers include Leonard and Ruth Ruby and Charles and Rachel Ruby selling interests in multiple parcels to Robert L. Walker and others.
The Carthage Brotherhood and Sisterhood invite members to a social and regular business meeting at the Carthage Community Center on Monday January 20 at 6 p.m. The event features a membership drive with ham buns coffee and covered dish. Entertainment is provided.
Mr and Mrs David DeWitt Jr hosted a Carthage graduation party for daughter Shelia DeWitt Farlow of Arlington who recently completed high school at Tech High School Indianapolis. Guests came from New Castle Muncie Raleigh Arlington and Carthage. Attendees enjoyed games contests and light refreshments with a decorated cake centerpiece.
Sixteen members gathered Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Loyal Hunt for the Home Garden Club's January session. Mrs. Fred Flick presided. officers were retained: president Mrs. Flick, vice president Mrs. Albert Ray, and secretary-treasurer Mrs. Gouldie Kyser. New active member Mrs. Willem Henley joined as the club planned one annual flower show and a fall plant sale.
Alvaro Al McDaniel 86 a retired tavern owner of Carthage died at his South Main Street home at 5 am Wednesday after two years of illness. He previously worked at a paper mill, owned a tavern on West Mill Street, and built a Main Street building. Surviving are a son Rue McDaniel, a daughter Myra Price, a half brother Chester McDaniel, a granddaughter Mrs. Charles Elmore, and a great grandson. Funeral Friday at 2:30 pm at Hampton Mortuary with Rev. Frank Guyatt. burial Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
The IHSAA suspended Muncie Central for one year amid fan misconduct and on court tensions. The piece argues for sportsmanship, notes prior suspensions, and urges good behavior in future games while recounting local scores including Rushville Lions, Morristown Yellow Jackets, and Triton in Shelby County play.

Reservations to Rachel King by January 27. A closing inspection and practice on January 24 at Rushville were scheduled.
Mrs Hugh Weber and her daughter Mrs James Wright will host the Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority meeting on Tuesday January 21 at 8 p.m. at Mrs Weber's home.

Mr and Mrs Unn Fitch spent the weekend as guests of Mr and Mrs Everett Sherwood in Brookville sharing hospitality and social visits.
In the Rush Tournament New Salem defeats Manilla 82 57 to reach the semifinals while Mays tops Morton 76 49 and Carthage Raiders beat Arlington 65 50. Grizzell leads Carthage with 18 points as Arlington threatened late but fell short.
The annual stockholders meeting on January 14 1964 elected six directors for 1964 Ross J Tweedy William H Dixon Donald Staten Sr Kenneth L Earnest Fred W Parish and Hugh F Weber. Officers chosen: Kenneth L Earnest president Ross J Tweedy vice president William H Dixon executive vice president cashier trust officer A Winfield assistant cashier and assistant trust officer Mary H Dixon bookkeeper Norma Brown bookkeeper Marietta May bookkeeper. Committees were appointed and the meeting adjourned after a social hour.
Foster Wilson and his father R F Wilson recall John Bucmiller the noted barrel maker from Jefferson County near Madison. Bucmiller a Montana resident now famed in gun circles recently returned from Africa safari. He spent years on railroads and retired in 1943 dedicating retirement to gunsmithing and barrel work for many guns.
Mr and Mrs B B Berninger and their Delphi son visited Mr and Mrs Hugh Weber for the weekend. Sunday dinner guests included Mr and Mrs Albert Weber of Wanamaker.
Mr. and Mrs Rex Edwards and sons Jeff and Stevie with Larry Ruble of Rushville spent Sunday visiting Mrs Edwards sister Mrs Fred Carpenter and Mr Carpenter. Grace Jones of Philadelphia Ind was a Saturday visitor of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Rhodes. Robert Walker joined Mr and Mrs Chester Cross for Saturday night supper and attended the Rushville Anderson game. Elmer Fenner visited Rev Kenneth Kuebler and family in Columbus. Del Monte Wagner of Arlington was a Sunday dinner guest of Howard McCorkle.
Rush County records show 170 marriage licenses issued in 1963 while 33 divorces and one annulment ended marriages. Civil suits reached 203 with 60 divorces. six divorce cases were dismissed after reconciliation amid 44 state criminal actions and 124 probate estates. Financial receipts totaled 146049 with 89272 for support payments. hunting and fishing licenses added 6828. Balance on Jan 1 stood at 16722.97.
