Carthage Lions Club meets at Tweedy Memorial Center

The Carthage Lions Club held its regular dinner meeting at the Tweedy Memorial Center Monday evening with president Lewis Lafuse presiding. A report showed 49 poinsettia plants were distributed to sick and shut-ins at Christmas. Hans Beuhler of Container Corporation spoke on the company’s plants locally and abroad. Lions will visit the Mays club on February 9.

Carthage Spelling Bee Chooses Local Contestants

At Tweedy Memorial building the Carthage Schools held a PTA spelling contest with eliminations by grade. Winners include Marilyn Adams and Jerry Dixon in first grade, Kim Tweedy in second, Mike Matlock in third and fourth, Craig Lafuse in fifth and sixth, Carol Ellis in seventh and eighth, and Anne Campbell and runners up in high school. Rush County 4H Sets Judging and Demonstration Dates

Rush County 4H adult women leaders set dates for junior and senior judging and demonstration contests and announced district and state activities. Mrs. Joseph Alexander explained changes in the electric project. A clothing clinic for adult and junior leaders was scheduled for February 15. New 1960 projects were discussed and materials distributed.

Legion Post 316 drafts plans for home improvements

Bertram Howard Post 316 of the American Legion met at the Community Center basement with eleven members. Presiding commander Bill Alexander announced the home had been re wired for electricity and members will tour the building at the next meeting to plan improvements.

Writer Martha Standing Foster authors Ginger Box a new boys and girls book from Bobbs Merrill Indianapolis. Foster widow of Dr Paul C Foster of Gallipolis Ohio is a daughter in law of Rev and Mrs DeWitt Foster. The Quaker themed tale follows a girl and her brother solving a mystery in a 1910 summer rural Quaker community. The author, a Society of Friends member, resides in Cincinnati.

Local Soldier Chosen for 4th Armored Division Honor Guard

PFC Jerry D. Wrightsman 19, son of Mr and Mrs Leonard C Wrightsman Carthage Ind, was selected to serve with the 4th Armored Division Honor Guard in Germany for his precision drill and appearance. He entered the Army in December 1958 and arrived overseas in April 1959, after graduating Carthage High School in 1958.

Forrest W. New Phone Equipment Installed in Four Central Offices

Installation of telephone carrier gear in General Telephone central offices at Rushville Arlington Glenwood and Milroy is nearly complete. When active the system will expand long distance and Extended Area Service between Rushville and the three communities, with six carriers at Rushville and two at each of the other offices. Each carrier unit holds 12 channels enabling 12 simultaneous two way conversations.

Carthage Blue Raiders Win Rush County Title

Carthage High School's Blue Raiders defended their Rush County tournament title with a 54 to 44 victory over Manilla in the final. Richard Doughty led with 22 points as Carthage built a 29-20 halftime lead and stretched it to 38-29 after three quarters before sealing the win with strong defense and rebounding.

Raiders Rout Arlington In Afternoon Triumph
