Morton and Raleigh co favorites in 1933 county tourney
In 1933 Morton and Raleigh were co favorites with Morton winning a tight 39-37 game. A veteran Carthage squad faltered under center Babe Shultz as coach. The following season 1934 New Salem edged Morton 20-18 in a defensive contest. In 1935 Arlington Wildcats led by Bill Addison Freddie Lee and Bill Ryse defeated Morton 48-32. A January 1936 blizzard endangered eighteen Arlington schoolchildren aboard a bus. The next week Carthage Bluebirds beat Arlington 27-26 in the final ten seconds on a pass from Charles Whitfield to Paul Benton Norris.

In Carthage 1937 action the defending champions fell to the unheralded Mays squad 17 to 15. Bob McMichael top Rush County scorer was held scoreless from the field as Mays delivered a strong team effort. Morton captured the tourney crown with a 25 to 16 victory in the finals.

New Salem Eagles Dominate Early Season Showdowns
New Salem in 1938 opened strong in the ahe season with an 18-9 win over Carthage as Babine scored all three field goals. In 1939 the Eagles surged through the three, reached finals before losing 28-17 to Carthage, who also defeated them 30-17.

David Whitfield Wins Lions Peace Essay Contest
David L. Whitfield a sixteen year old Carthage High School student will represent the Carthage Lions Club in Lions International's $50 000 Peace Essay Contest. His essay was judged first among local entries with Sherry McKain and Becky McCorkle placing second and third. A panel of judges complimented Whitfield calling his essay outstanding. He received a certificate and a $20 check from the Carthage Club.

The Carthage Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star met at the Masonic Hall in Carthage on Wednesday night. Worthy Matron Grace Pitts and Worth Patron Donald Francher presided. Ruth Forman of the 12th District Deputy made an official visit. Associates and guests from Knights Town and Connersville attended, a brief business session followed, and Lavada Wilson presented a decorated birthday cake before a social dining gathering hosted by Janet Kile Ellen Hudson and Bertha Ronan.

Stanford H. Collins is appointed plant manager of the 57th Street mill in Los Angeles for the Container Ac cepts division. Morton and Milroy easily reached the Rush County Tournament semi finals with Thursday night wins over Arlington and Manilla. Milroy pulled away in the second half behind Stummer LeMons and Harcourt while Morton relied on Campbell and Sullivan as Arlington faded 59 to 50. Milroy's reserves closed the margin to finish 70 54 over Manilla. Milroy shot 40.5 percent to Manilla 29.9.
