Mr. and Mrs. George Moore traveled to Arizona a few weeks ago and spent New Year's in California before returning to Arizona to finish their visit with their daughter Mrs. Robert Cushing and family in Tempe.
Mr and Mrs Harold Ruby John A and David Ruby returned Saturday from Fort Lauderdale Florida after a several days vacation. They visited Mr and Mrs Earl Nowotne and report they are getting along nicely and would move into their new home Monday. They also visited Oren Millers and other friends.
James McGeorge was arrested near Carthage by Marshal Hugh Trowbridge for exceeding the speed limit within Carthage. He paid a $1 fine plus $13 costs in the local Justice of Peace Court.
The Hancock County Tournament draw was conducted at the Greenfield Elks Club after a Hancock County Athletic Association banquet. New Palestine vs Hancock Central Thursday 8:15 pm, Charlottesville vs Mt. Comfort Saturday noon, McCordsville vs winner of game 1 2:15 pm, with the Saturday 8:15 pm championship.
Bertha Beck presides at the 10th district American Legion Auxiliary meeting in Fortville Christian church with Norma McKain and Rachel King as guests. The department president promotes the Crusade for Freedom and urges units to sponsor it and the Child Welfare program. Beck notes the district has 35 units and 3,000 plus members toward a 3,932 quota, with January 25 deadline for merits. Rabbit Head plaques are awarded to 14 unit presidents and chairmen, including Carthage.
Two Rush County 4-H girls, Carol Ewing of Ripley Township and Ruth Louise Ryman of Washington Township, were presented fifty dollar checks by Home Demonstration clubs. The funds support scholarships for 4-H girls enrolling in a School of Home Economics at college. Both students are completing the first semester as Purdue University freshmen and have been standout 4-H participants for nine years.
Mr and Mrs James Terhune of Carthage R R will observe their 60th wedding anniversary this Sunday January 13. There will be no celebration but they will be glad to greet friends that day.
David McMahan a 15 year old Mays High School sophomore died Tuesday in Rush Memorial hospital from injuries after a skidding car driven by Mrs William G Waggoner left the road Monday The youth home near Rushville is survived by his father Isaac Homer McMahan of Rushville his mother Rosie Sammons McMahan of near Rushville and a sister in Indianapolis Services are set for 2 pm Thursday at the Rushville Nazarene church with burial in East Hill Cemetery
Semester exams loom as the county tourney nears and seniors plan futures after vacation. Junior class hosts a Soc Hop with The Musicateers, led by Dean Addison, while seniors share stories of trends and teachers portrayed through a playful teachers piece.
The Carthage Raiders beat visiting Mays 56 to 39 for their seventh win of the season. Gary McClurg scored 29 points as Carthage dominated with 85 rebounds to 11 for Mays and held the Tigers to 29 percent shooting. The Carthage seconds also defeated Mays seconds 34-21.
The Carthage Order of Eastern Star held its stated meeting with line officers advancing one station and the Worthy Matron in charge. Sister Edna Nell Kennedy organized a birthday cake surprise for Betty Brooks as officers proclaimed letters forming Worthy Matron. Inspections planned for January 18 at Rushville with Rushville and Milroy chapters. Sister Ruth Byrd signed the by-laws affiliating from Chicago Sr. chapter.

Rebecca Mahan becomes deputy county clerk. install 30 mph speed limit signs near Raleigh Christian Church. approve Hancock County Home residents as temporary after boiler repairs. Hancock officials request accommodation.
Franklin Indiana prepares for the January 11 ceremony marking the home’s first resident, Mrs. Pearl Hitchins Kaelin of Indianapolis. The three day open house runs January 11 to 13 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm daily, with six new residents weekly thereafter.
Representative Ralph Harvey of the House Agriculture Committee cautions farmers on reporting Soil Bank payments for federal income tax and Social Security. He says most payments from self employment apply, with Conservation Reserve payments treated as capital expenditures under IRS rules. Farmers with large operations should consult authorities before filing.
Caleb Marsh Albert Ray and Larry Marsh occupied a car struck by Freder Gorman of Knightstown at the Log St railroad crossing. Marsh's car stopped to let Gorman cross the track before the collision. Gorman allegedly sped, losing control. No injuries reported. Gorman to appear before the local J. P. court Friday.
Organizers finalize details for the annual Farmers Institute at Carthage Community Center with a January 2 talent show and January 25 all day program. The event features exhibits, a strong speaker lineup, and generous donor support for a large crowd.
Carol Ewing of Twin Pines was chosen Honorary Coed Captain for 1957 by Pershing Rifles at Purdue. Also selected were 1st Lt Sandy Babcock and 2nd Lt Maddie Hibbeler. Seven finalists earned invites to the pledge initiation banquet and Ewing will represent Purdue in the National Honorary Brigadier General Contest.
Heavy fire wrecked the Odd Fellows Building on Knightstown Public Square early Sunday with steep damage estimates. The Knights town Volunteer Fire Department saved the structure after a blaze believed to ignite in a refrigerator at Flory's Gift Shop on the ground floor. owners Richard McCormack and the shop’s staff anticipate reopening before week’s end.
Mr and Mrs Stanley Hawkins and their daughters Lois and Marcia Leisure were in Indianapolis Saturday to see the musical Oklahoma at the Lyric Theatre.
The Mrs Henry G Stager property vacated by Mr and Mrs Bruno Lupato is now occupied by Mr and Mrs Eugene Miekush and their family from Illinois Mrs Miekush is a sister to Mrs Joe Porter.
Pfc. John R. Hinshaw returns to Ft. Bragg North Carolina after spending the holidays with his mother Mrs C L Popejoy of New Castle and his grandmother Mrs. Margaret Hinshaw of Carthage for the season.
Arlington and Milroy start the Rush County Basketball Tournament with 6:30 p.m. games followed by Morton vs New Salem and Carthage vs Mays. Arlington is favored to repeat the 1956 title after beating Morton 60-56 last Friday and has only losses to Arlington earlier in December. The record table shows past finals and winners from 1920 onward with Arlington and New Salem among the frequent champions.
The East Central Conference lists games with Winchester at Centerville Knightstown at Cambridge City Middletown at Highland and three county tours including Rush County on Jan 10 to 12 Shelby County on Jan 11 to 12 and Henry County on Jan 9 to 12. The notices emphasize regional matchups and tournament dates for teams across the league.
The roundup notes little change in league standings. Carthage leads with 3-0, Morristown 2-0, Centerville and Milroy 2-1. Liberty earned its first ECC win 64-58 at Cambridge City to go 1-2, Knightstown fell 57-39 to Hagerstown to drop to 2-4, Spiceland lost 54-7 to Cambridge City, Hagerstown rose to 4-0, Cambridge City at 2-3.
ECC teams have won two tournament titles this season with potential for more this week. Middletown won the Highland Invitational on December 15, Centerville edged an all ECC field to win the Hagerstown Invitational, Liberty reached the Whitewater Valley semis before losing to Harrisburg 71 62. Morristown’s Jerry Bass set a school scoring record with 43 points against Fairland, surpassing his own 42 point mark and eclipsing 37 point nights by teammates and rivals Don Sylvester Knightstown. Impressive ECC performers include Don Widan Centerville, Jim Hart Morton, Don Dickey Union City, and Jack Davis Hagerstown.
In the Whitewater Valley Tournament Liberty defeats Springfield 71 to 30, and Harrisburg loses to Liberty 71 to 62. Liberty dominates the two results to pace the field.
In a tight finish Hagerstown defeated Cambridge City 55 to 52 while Centerville beat Union City 66 to 56. Centerville then overcame Hagerstown 48 to 47 for the final score. Mr and Mrs Louis Henderson mark their 35th wedding anniversary next Sunday with a family dinner.
