Mr and Mrs Russell Newgent, Carthage school teachers, spent a week in Washington D C visiting Mrs Newgent s sister Mrs Donald Meid and Mr Meid returning to Carthage Sunday

Wayman Chalk Newsom was arrested and fined five dollars plus costs on Sunday December 30 for driving without a license.
Mr and Mrs Roy Herkless plan to depart next Wednesday January 9 for St Petersburg Florida where they will reside for the winter season.
Elmer H. Norvell aged 33, brother of Mrs. Delmar Sipes of Carthage, died last Thursday in Shelbyville from a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services were held Saturday in Shelbyville. Surviving include his wife and parents, three children and three stepchildren at home, three sisters and four brothers.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Fenner and son Larry spent holidays in Florida traveling by west coast to Key West and returning by the east coast They visited Pan ama City St Petersburg Punta Gorda Orlando and met friends W O Ornelle Mrs Franklin Mr and Mrs Jacob Brown Mr and Mrs John Adams They also toured Lookout Mountain Tennessee and Mammoth Cave Kentucky returning the first of the week.

County commissioners held their final 1956 session last Thursday and approved reappointment of Kenneth Earnest as county attorney at 100 dollars a month and Frank Lawrence as county highway superintendent for one year. Low bids for petroleum products were awarded: Cities Service 18.6 cents per gallon gasoline, Jaggers Oil 11.8 cents for fuel oil, D X Sunray 14 cents for diesel, Pure Oil for lubricants. Howell Brothers won auto and truck tires at 8496.57 dollars. Goodyear Rubber Company bid 3986.96 dollars as the other bid.
Lee Nixon 90 of Washington DC died Friday in a Washington hospital after months of illness. A native of Rush County he was born February 29 1866 and once served as Indianapolis city clerk. He spent years in Porto Rico as postmaster and worked for the Republican National Committee. Survivors include a niece and two nephews. Funeral services were held at Wyatt Moore Memorial with burial in East Hill Cemetery Rushville.

Notable entries include a girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Billy Hinton of Carthage, a daughter named Liesa Jean to Elvet Moore and wife in Westville New Jersey, and daughters or sons named Joni Elaine Keven Lee Jerry Dale Kim Allen born to Carthage and surrounding residents with dates and weights provided.
Dr and Mrs N I Schoolfield of Indianapolis were Friday evening dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt and daughter Pamela. Mrs Omar Heim and Mrs Hoyt Addison will spend Saturday in Indianapolis. Mr and Mrs Jesse Haney and son of Hagerstown were New Year guests of Mr and Mrs Carl Carson Sr and family. Sunday evening dinner guests in the Hunt home were Mr and Mrs Joe Duke of Pendleton and Mr and Mrs Ralph McClarnon.

Rush County shows 79.4 percent voter turnout in last November's presidential election with 9 587 of 12 076 registered voters voting. Statewide participation reached 83.4 percent, a new high, with Greene County leading at 89.9 percent and Pike County among the lower rates at 62.1 percent.
The January issue of Successful Arming magazine predicts a continued drop in meat per person. After rising from 186 pounds in 1951 to 164 pounds last year, supply is expected to fall to about 157 pounds in 1947.
Joni Elaine Plank, daughter of Mr and Mrs Eldon Plank of Carthage, arrives at 3 45 New Year’s afternoon at Rush Memorial hospital as the county’s first baby of the year. The family will receive gifts from Rushville businesses that annually honor the year’s first newborn.
Miss Lillian R. Henley born near Carthage March 23 1878 died at her Carthage home Wednesday evening at 6 p m after two years of declining health. She was daughter of Reuben and Rachel Young Henley and is survived by brothers Oran and Grant of Carthage, nieces Ruth Henley of Richmond and Florence Henley of Kokomo, and nephew H Kurtz Henley of Miami Florida. She belonged to Carthage Friends church. Funeral Friday afternoon at 2 at Thompson Funeral Home with Rev Robert A Shockney officiating. Interment Riverside Cemetery.
Eugene Reddick entered St. Vincent's hospital in Indianapolis on Thursday for observation.
John Deere Day unfolds Tuesday January 8 at the Carthage Community Center with a full color feature Heavens to Betsy about a farm family. Sponsored by Carthage Tractor & Implement Co admission is by ticket only and free to farmers. The program includes five additional films on green feeding tractor history and new John Deere equipment with field demonstrations.
Rush County to launch annual basketball tournament with pairings revealed this Thursday at the County Superintendent DeMunbrun s office. Arlington, defending champion, and Morristown among nine teams competing, with season tickets and details to follow after the meeting.

Entertainment includes acts from Ripley Posey Walker and Strange townships. Home economics and agricultural exhibits are featured with open classes for boys and girls.
