Weaning Pigs at Very Best Time

Proper nutrition and pasture reduce hardship during weaning, while partial rationing precedes removal of the sow to promote rapid litter growth.

Oats Seed Bed Quality and Seed Selection
Corn ground thoroughly disked in spring makes the best seed bed for oats. Fall plowed stubbled ground disked in spring also works well. Oats need a firm seed bed with fine top, and while not highly profitable they serve as nurse crop for clover and alfalfa. About six million acres are grown annually despite higher crops. Use a good locally adapted variety, well graded seed free of weeds, and avoid smut infested seed to prevent 10 to 20 bushel per acre losses.
Gardens and Hens Cleverly Secure Garden Fences
An old hen advises chicks to watch openings as gardens attract them. A 6 foot chicken proof fence helps keep hens out, though a single husky hen can wreck a fine garden and occasional wing cropping may be needed to maintain defences.
Hose Use Risks on Plants in Bloom
Using a strong cold water stream on tender blooming vegetables or flowers is unwise. The blast chills the plant and can tear buds and blossoms from stems. Roots need water when soil is very dry, so watering should be careful and gradual.
